considering an overwhelming number of minor leagues never make it up for the real payday even for a few games, let alone a whole year - i think he'll take this scenario every time. it would be nice to not worry about being sent down for a year. he's young enough to come back unless you're implying his mlb usage led to an arm injury

Lost in all of this is Cashman’s roundabout way of saying they offered him a 7 year contract worth 30.5 million a year. “Buying out seven years of free agency” yeah bro technically correct but whatever you say

Awesome research. Incredible outing by Maddux...after a 78-pitch performance, he should be able to pitch on three days rest.

I saw this call in a "bad calls" video just the other day and thought that the swipe had totally missed the runner. It;s why I teach my guys to tag so that some part of the runner has to distort from the tag, preferably, make him eat the ball

Lol, I commented on the most recent video that this channel's like the next best thing I've seen to if Jon Bois just decided to stop doing mammoth documentaries and decided to keep his quality but increased the regularity by not doing 8 hour documentaries, and stuck to only baseball. As I dig further, I find multiple references to Dave Stieb. Something tells me you're already a huge fan, so I hope you take that as the huge compliment I intended it as!

I hate Barry bonds with a passion, but he should be in the hall of fame. Steroids makes the ball go further, but ya still have to hit the ball. And he was the best at it. HOF’er even without the steroid years

They already use image recognition and LiDAR to track the ball and determine velocity and spin. It would only take a few more cameras and having all the players measured to have tracking markers put on their uniforms to get a precise location in 3D space for the ball to determine the call in real time for each players strike zone dynamically controlling for the batting stance used pitch by pitch. The players union would never go for it because an objective standard for balls and strikes would make all but the most elite of the elite pitchers too unpredictable to use. They have the technology to reduce the officiating crew from 4 to 1 and that 1 would just be there to interpret the rules and keep order. The other 3 would still be on call in case of a brawl or something but otherwise unnecessary. They might still be needed to call tag plays at the bases.

Why don’t we ever hear about the umpires who are objectively worse than him? Don’t answer, it was a rhetorical question. I already know the answer. I remember when an umpire fucked up a call Helen Keller could have made and it ruined a perfect game on the 27th out. Then people tripped over themselves trying to assure everyone he’s actually one of the best. I bet his generic white guy name and badass moustache played a big part. Fucking up the most important call in a perfect game is worth thousands of wrong balls and strikes calls.

life long Royals fan, my dad would win Royals trivia tickets and we'd go a few times a year. We went one time and Jim Abbot (the one pitcher with only 1 arm) was pitching for the Angels. This was back in the 90s when the Royals stunk. And Abbot is perfect through 4 and that is when I had the thought *well at least the Royals stick so much I get to see Jim Abbot throw a Perfect game*, and I can't remember if it was the bottom of the 5th or 6th one of the batter hit an opposite field double. I was so upset since the Royals because I knew they would still lose. And it didn't matter as soon after that there was a hour plus long rain delay, so we left (as we lived about 4 hours away from KC). The 2014-2015 season felt so rewarding. You follow the team for decades of being trash (I was too young to remember '85) then to see them win was one of the best feelings as a fan.

Its funny how were so ready to put an asterisk for steroids yet almost every pitcher is using sticky stuff to increase spin, etc. Nowadays its like "its fine. I dont like it but im not gonna act like his accomplishments mean nothing its still impressive" Steroids only make your muscles recover faster and stronger, you still have to be able to hit the ball well enough to send it out. He was very much talented

At least he can say he has a MLB appearance. Most guys in the system never come even remotely close accomplishing that dream of theirs. Like 15% of draft picks actually play a major league game and like 1% of those will play 100. And he got the save.
