Thank you for this excellent video mister Jose! I love the way you break it down for anyone to understand. Had no idea my Canon had a ticking death clock installed from day one. Your explanation of an external waste-ink can made me think of waste-oil catch-cans that can be installed in some automotive engines. Please keep up the superb work of educating all who will listen.

I have an Epson R2000 and it reported full ink pad after about 4-1/2 years of regular use. I bought the adjustment program from you and after extracting the files out of the RAR file ( which took me a while because I don't have winzip) I reset the pads and the printer is now going strong again. Your tips on how to make an ink recovery system are good too. To replace the printer would cost me over $500. So the Adjustment Program was a real $$$ saver. And I like buying low cost real Epson ink for $40 a set (all 8) on Amazon or Ebay. I must have 5 of each color now. Thanks for all you do, I love watching your videos.

Jose, thank you so much for your very informative videos. I recently purchased the Canon Pro 100, installed the OEM starter ink set, also purchased second set of OEM cartridges and I have ordered PercisionColor 16oz squezy deluxe refill kit with resetter squezy bottles. I have watched and understand your recommended ink management system. I have two questions. Rather than use PC yellow ink and the related issues (cleaning, chip replace etc.) could I continue to purchase and use OEM yellow carts, running each cart dry and replacing with and OEM yellow cart? And two, if I did this could I still plan to use PC 's icc profiles? (once I cycle through carts so I would be using 7 carts with PC inks and the one yellow OEM cart)

You could do that but it's not necessary if you start with a flushed yellow cartridge one that has been cleaned until the sponge is white then you can simply begin to use PC yellow. The only reason I would recommend using only OEM yellow ink it's if you're planning to sell your prints. Yellow dye is the weakest part of anything ink set and is most prone to fading. As far as that goes I would guess you would need custom profiles if we're to print with 7 third part colors and OEM yellow.

Purchased my Canon Pro-100 in September of 2013. I have printed borderless 4x6 all the way to 13x19 maybe three to four thousand prints and the printer is still going strong!! Never had an issue. About every six to eight months I will go in and give the printer a thorough cleaning with tips and windex and that's all I have done to the printer......

Couple hundred? Just a guess. Maybe a bit more.

I have a Canon MT G3202 which I've modified to drain outside the back of the printer. G3200/G3202 is incredibly easy to replace the absorber pads on, just two screws. You can get the pads from Precision Roller. And you can reset the counter with a service mode button combination. I don't bother with the third-party reset programs -- they're often a scam. I've just made the jump to a MT G7020 and I'll have to see about modifying that one as well. Unfortunately, I don't see any documentation on how that one can be diverted or reset. (I'll perhaps have to make it myself.) I also don't see pads on Precision Roller for it. Fingers crossed it's relatively easy. The G7020 has a duplexer, so it's probably not going to be quite as simple as popping the back off, like with the G3202. I also don't know if the G7020 will have the same easy WIC reset since the interface panel is marginally more advanced.

I love the Canon MX870 but the cost of replacing the absorption pads may exceed buying a new printer. Which would you suggest I buy new?

That's why I stick with printer models that come with user replaceable waste ink tanks or carts. You need to come over to EPSON. The XP models series most have that feature.

@@cheo1949 I think that if you are trying to spread knowledge you should be a little more specific. I was respecting your knowledge on these things until you said this. Have you seen the kinds of issues that people are having with Epson XP printers in 2022? No ink absorption option is worth the headaches and incredible costs with ink that many of the models have. How about suggesting an XP printer that is worth the money? I dread the day that I cannot get my Canon Pixma MX870 (that works great with 3rd party or after-market inks) to still print. I don't have $500 to spend on a printer nor on ink. A little slow? I'll take it. It is reliable. Are Brother printers all terrible? HP? You don't even mention them here.

I've had my well used Canon MP980 for 12 years and it's only just gone into service mode with the absorbtion pads full. I want to avoid purchasing one for the next few months. There are various methods shown to reset the ink counter for different Canon printers - none which did the reset but it allow me to get into service mode and not get any further. Does anyone have a reset method for this model? Thanks, Angie

It's near impossible to do that this day. You also need a CANON Service tool and have logon access to the service server. They have blocked us from using these service tools.

I wonder if there is anyway to " suck " the waste ink from the pads? I'm thinking perhaps something like a vacuum with a thin pipe that could be poked into the sponges to extract the ink. Sounds far fetched but perhaps it could work if we could gain access. Having said that my guess is the counter wouldn't be reversed anyway so even if it were possible to physically suck the ink out of the pad the counter would still show it to be full making the task futile. Fingers crossed my own Pro 100 lasts a few years before that happens to me 😉

Yes. Cool idea but futile. You also can no longer enter service mode to use the correct service tool to reset it to zero. Even if you still have to deal with the physical pads themselves. Epson 13" printers allow you to divert ink outside and reset counters.

Here is another good question on Canons because they have multiple head cleaning levels does Canon run a different level of ink based on a time of off time between prints? So someone who turns off the printer say for a week would it do a low head clean, but if someone leaves it off for a month would it do a full head clean? For their pad saturation(full) timer does it have a dry time counter that would affect it too? So a company printing thousands of prints like you mentioned from Amazon would it fill quicker because there is no dry time between prints? Have they ever had a printer in a pool of ink from over saturating their pads? Just the techie in me thinking about different scenarios.

Well let's use the pro 100 us an example you have two time periods from 0 to 120 hours and then from 120 hours all the way to 480 hours so that would be five days and up to 20 days. So say at the Zero Hour you run a print and it's preceded by a cleaning cycle that starts the clock at zero you could conceivably not print until almost at 480 hour limit and end up running the smaller cleaning cycle that would be triggered right after 120 hours. From 0 to just under 120 hours you will not have any cleaning when printing. If you print something right 120 hours you will trigger the smaller of the two cleaning cycles.

So based on that and the times you have mentioned with your PRO 1000 they are twice as frequent on the PRO 1000 as the PRO 100?

YES! MAYBE! It does not appear that the PRO-1000 operates of strict timed cycles. It is more IA based and performs them IT see it needs them. The PRO-1-10 seems to be the 60-120-240-480 hours. You can not for sure apply that top the PRO-1000.

Great video Jose as always!!! At the cost of a Pro 100 in the States with your rebates I don't see why anyone would bother with a maintenance by Canon to fix the pads just buy a new printer, or buy up two or three and put them aside. They are unused and can stay in the box for years to come. Then you have 2 or 3 sets of cartridges to modify for PC inks like I believe you have done this Jose. The cost just doesn't justify the means(when we all buy a printer it should be in the back of your mind what to do if this happens. Buy a new one of have it fixed, whichever is cheaper usually is the choice). We are all refilling and cutting corners to keep ourselves printing fine prints at a very low price. So look at the bright side while it lasts. WIC tool is great for the Epson printers for sure. But Epson has been able to block it on some of the newer printers. My Epson Expression photo XP-15000 isn't seen by the tool nor can I send them the data through the WIC software, as it doesn't see the printer. Thanks Epson!!! At least it does use a maintenance cart which is easily accessible to self service. The point being that we might be locked out by Canon or Epson totally in the near future of doing what it is we are able to do so enjoy it while it lasts. And all of us should be happy and grateful that Jose and Precision Colors and Inkjet Mall and others are working hard to keep this up and running for all of us too keep printing at a reasonable prices. Keep up the great informational videos Jose so we can all benefit this fun hobby of seeing prints and sharing with family and friends all sorts of great works of art. Keep them coming as I look forward to each and every video that you do Jose!!!

Maybe the reason it doesnt see it is because it does not utilize the conventonal waste ink counters. Yes I am nor worried at all about my PRO100 but not every one has spares waiting in tbe aisles.

Correct Jose the tool recognizes that the printer has a maintenance cart which has its own chip that does the counting for it. But my WF-7720 has the same thing(a maintenance cart with chip) but in the control tab on the WF-7720 I have all the options like Information, Cleaning, and Testing. The XP-15000 states that this printer is not supported yet with a button Create report. Even with status monitor and all the Epson reporting turned off(which I did as soon as the driver was loaded) the message comes back with "Application could not gather any useful information from the printer. Unfortunately, we will not be able to add support for this printer...". So Epson is putting blocking measures into their new stuff to counter them from working with these types of softwares. Another reason that firmware updates on the older models shouldn't be done or it might lock them out too! Maybe it didn't come out the way I intended in the first comment but people should understand all the work that people put into this to keep us all printing with third party inks and great papers at reasonable prices isn't easy. As in the end if people only had the high priced OEM inks I'm sure that less people would be printing! Which would be a shame!!!

Great if you live in the US but not if you live in Canada where you will pay over $400 for a canon pro 100. I was lucky to get a sealed store return for $150 but even still, adding in the $200 cost of refill bottles and all the extra work still makes this printer cost at least $350.

Personally since I paid $100 for my Pro-10, $20 for 50 sheets of 13X19 Canon Pro Luster, and $65 for shipping after discount and rebate I'm really not worried at all about when the waste ink pads fill. Even if somehow they managed to fill in a year, considering I paid less than a set of inks for the printer, I really couldn't be too upset lol. If I can get the same deal next Xmas I might just buy another one anyway since at that price it's like getting a free printer with your ink and paper.

I used the example of one to one and a half years as the fastest time that the waste ink pads going to be filled but that is a rare occasion that is only for people who are constantly running cleaning cycle or constantly changing cartridges from one ink set to the next and so you generate lot of ink purges. But will not occur during normal usage. Like I said. My Pro 100 has been printing for about five and a half years at least and still no sign of any problems.

Not calling into question this video, but I call bullshit on Canon and Epson. I'm sure they go out of their way to design the pads so that they're irreplaceable so we're forced to doll out more $$$

Of course they are. A little container for the flushed inks would save people all that trouble but what will then break in a printer? You'll keep yours for more than 10 years and they won't be selling you much. Especially if you use the cartridgeless models.

Trying to keep you well educated. And that my friend takes time and lots of talking. Next time I'll just show graphics without talking and make it 2 minutes but then you'd complain you were forced to READ!!. If I did that 99.99999% of my users would leave me.
