Met him at O'hare airport once, many years ago. He could have blown us off, but he stood there and chatted for quite a while. He was so kind, friendly, and gracious. A real class act. I'll never forget that.

Every year, Lou Rawls used to have a telethon for the United Negro College Fund. Jerry Lewis did one for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. There is a song called "Let's Clean Up The Ghetto" with Lou Rawls, The O' Jays, Dee Dee Sharp, Billy Paul, Teddy Pendergrass, & Archie Bell. They went under the name Philadelphia International All Stars. Lou is also the 2nd voice on Sam Cooke's "Bring It On Home To Me". Sam & Lou started out in gospel groups.

Bongo drums are the short drums, usually mounted in tandem or played holding them between one's legs. The Conga drum is the much larger drum it can be mounted on a stand or played using a strap around the holders shoulder. Lou Rawls, from Chicago, IL. was first a Gospel singer and then moved to secular recordings. He spanned the soul music era and continued making hits through the Disco era and beyond. He was one of the few Black American's to headline in Las Vegas during the hey day of casinos such as The Sands, The Desert Inn, The Stardust and the Riviera. He partnered with Anheuser-Busch Breweries to raise money for the United Negro College Fund. UNCF's telethon, “The Lou Rawls Parade of Stars,” went on to raise more than $200 million for UNCF from 1980-2006.

The epitome of cool! Jay called it -- Lou Rawls could slip into the crooner persona if and whenever he wanted. Another *great* tune by Rawls, from a few years earlier, is "A Natural Man." Total groove, and his "declaration of independence" from the working grind.
