This song always makes me think of the Cosby Show when they celebrated the grandparents’ 49th wedding anniversary.

For many of us, “The Cosby Show” was our introduction to this song. I know it’s sacrilegious to bring up his name now because of what he did, but at the time, that episode where they serenaded the grandparents with this song, was classic. And it’s a great song by the great Ray Charles. I also highly recommend the CCR version.

It's a truly maddening shame that the entire show is tarnished now by his behavior. I have the entire dvd set of the show - and don't want to get rid of it - but KNOW I will never be able to watch the episodes in the same way.

They weren't born yet.
That was Margie Hendrix singing. She was one of the Raelettes, his backup singers and was also in love with Ray Charles. They were breaking up around the time this song was recorded; thus the pain in her voice. Great song❤🎶🎼

They weren't breaking up around the time of this song. This was 1958 and it was actually his first song with the Raylettes. She had his baby in 1959 and the affair continued though it began to deteriorate after the baby was born because she wanted him to leave his wife. She began drinking and using herion heavily. He threw her out of the Raylettes after a violent arguement in 1964.

R.I.P To A Great Singer Songwriter Ray Charles, Still Miss You
I can still see Rudy Huckstable's face singing the B-a-b-y ... part of this song! To me, it will live on forever in my memories. Loved that show too. Thanks for another great reaction! Ray Charles is a deep catalog you should continue to explore! ✌💙✌
Always love it when he says, "Sing your song, Margie" - and she DOES :)
Marjorie Hendrix is the second singer... and she was UPSET. They had a turbulent relationship.

Actually Margie was upset when they recorded "Hit the Road Jack". When they showed that part in "Ray", I screamed!!!!😂😂😂😂
Ray Charles was a Legend!!! "Hit the Road Jack (and don'tcha come back no more, no more, no more, no more)"
Love this!! I always remember this from The Cosby Show! It was too funny!!
That is the late great singer Mary Hendrix doing the solo unfortunately she died way too soon at the age of 38 in 1973 😢
Yall can legitimately spend a month on Ray Charles alone and cover R&B, gospel, the beginnings of soul music, blues, jazz, and country music. My 2nd fav country album of all-time is Ray's " Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music". It's country classics done in a Ray Charles style while still paying respect for the roots. It's considered one of the top albums of all time; any genre. Y'all should check it out, you probably know 4-5 songs he covered by now.

Cosby Show. Go offff Rudy.
Watch the movie, it explains the back up singers and ALL THAT DRAMA that went with that. It should be a movie you do soon. "RAY" is the name
I met Ray Charles in the first class section of an air flight. I noticed him right off because he was guided on by his son and entire entourage of burly guys in suits. After the flight started I went up to one of the men and asked if I could speak to Mr. Charles for a minute, as a big fan. He said absolutely not, but as I was turning around, Ray said "I always want a nice word. Let that boy come over here."
A lot of people remember this from the Cosby show, I remember it because my grandparents played it
I was very fortunate to see Ray Charles in concert. It was like watching a piece of music history.
Jay &Amber, you'll love his "What I'd Say"!!! Wait till you hear the back and forth with the backup singers! Live performance kzread.info/dash/bejne/enWex7WMY87RpKQ.html . Also his "Hit The Road Jack"!!!

I love noting the differences between the performances of What’d I Say based upon the censors and dispositions of whatever television program that they were on. Sometimes, the interchanges between Ray and the background singers sounded quite chaste; other times, I’m, not so much.
I remember this from a Cosby Show episode.
Ray's greatest double album from 1962, it was the 1st album that I bought and the greatest album ever recorded; "I Can't Stop Loving You", "You Win Again", "You Don't Know Me", "Take These Chains From My Heart", "Born To Lose", "Someday (You'll Want Me To Want You)", "Half As Much"... Ray Charles grew up in Florida playing Hank Williams & Country Music :) The albums are "Modern Sounds of Country& Western Music", if you could have but one album, THIS IS IT :)
Ray Charles crossed musical genres with ease.
RAY CHARLES & BILLY JOEL DUET “Baby Grand”. 👍🥂
Ray Charles created soul music.
One of Ray's earliest hits, "The Mess Around" shows off his piano prowess and dynamite vocals! You can't go wrong with Brother Ray!
Ray is the godfather of rhythm and blues. This song changed everything!
Every home should have a copy of "Ray Charles' Greatest Hits". "What'd I Say" parts 1 & 2 is a jumpin' little song. ☮💜🎶

One of the high points of my life is seeing Ray Charles Live. He was an old man, but still KILLED it!
Who else hears this and thinks of Rudy on the Cosby Show? Baby!
Marjorie Hendrix (sometimes Hendricks) (March 13, 1935 - July 14, 1973)[1] was an American rhythm and blues singer and founding member of the Raelettes, who were the backing singers for Ray Charles,
Ray Charles is a vibe. 😎
Ray Charles has a duet with Billy Joel called Baby Grand which would be a good song to react to. He also had an album called Genius Loves Company on which every song was a duet with another famous artist. Any song off that album would be worthy of a reaction.
The woman singing with Ray is Margie Hendrix (no relation to Jimi) one of "the Raelettes, Rays backup singers. Now check out Creedence Clearwater's version. The Animals also did a version on their debut album.
Need to do his rendition of God Bless America ❤
Yes, you should watch "Ray". Jaime Foxx nailed the role. Also check out the Cosby Show clip of when the lip sync this song.... so funny.😂
Ray Charles - I believe to my soul has always been a favourite!

Hearing this song brings back memories of hearing it on The Cosby Show and the youngest daughter Rudy lip synching the Baby part.
Try "Hide Nor' Hair", "Yes Indeed", "Hallelujah, I Love Her So", and my personal favorite from Ray is "You Are My Sunshine".
Ray Charles playing drums is amazing
I grew up on this music. My mom and dad would dance to Ray Charles music on Friday and Saturday nights in the mid to late 60's. His music brings back memories of when I was a child. Thank for playing his music.
Has there ever been a cooler artist than Ray Charles?
He was nicknamed "The Genuis" for a reason. One of the greats.
"WHAT I'D SAY" GREAT SONG "I CAN'T STOP LOVING YOU" My mom & dad's song.❤❤❤❤❤
Hearing that I just realized that Ray was THE voice of the blues for my parent’s generation.

My parents too, I remember the Columbia House Music Club, buy one album get 12 free. They joined the club and my first introduction to music and vinyl was Ray Charles, The Platters, Dave Brubeck(jazz), Nancy Wilson and others. I loved the music, the violins made, such a beautiful sound.
Love Ray Charles’s music.
"ONE DROP OF LOVE" by Ray Charles (from his "MY WORLD" album, released in 1993...) is a must! Actually, the whole album is fabulous!
My favorite Ray Charles song....
I recall dancing and singing to this with my Dad- great times, fabulous music! Marjorie Hendrix of his Raylettes sang the MESS as his backups. ✌️❤️
Lots of great music from Ray Charles. He was the first to combine the rhythm of gospel music with the raunch of the blues. If you haven't, see the biopic Ray with Jamie Foxx as Ray Charles. Epic.
Is my Favorite song of his, when Margie sings it’s so so powerful I love love love every second of her beautiful voice ❤❤❤
Two tracks by Ray Charles which I recommend are: "I Don't Need No Doctor", "Hit The Road Jack".
I know everyone in their 40s or older are thinking about the Cosby Show when we hear this.
Bay-baaay 😂
CCR does a version of this song. John Fogerty's vocals are outstanding! Not to take away from Ray Charles' always excellent vocalizing.

Agreed, both versions are stellar and just recently, I found on KZread the Righteous Brothers doing this song with Darlene Love and the Blossoms doing back up on Shindig. That was a real treat!
His version of You Are My Sunshine is AMAZING !
What is not to love about Ray Charles! What an incredible artist he was. Pure soul!
Ray is the best of the best!! RIP Ray Charles!!
Have you done "I Can't Stop Loving You"? Also a great tune. Thanks for this one!
In the early 90's I was in Dallas for a company training. The last night they brought in Ray for a concert. I was not going to go, I was thinking I don't want to see old Ray Charles. I missed the shuttle back to the hotel. Since I was there I went to the concert. It wound up being one of the best concerts of my life.
I was fortunate to see Ray once. I was standing about 10 feet from the stage. Great experience!
Ray Charles and Billy Joel "Baby Grand"
My mom and dad(who ran his own band out of Queens ny in the 60s and 70s) were huge Ray fans. My mom would sing this song whenever she was in the kitchen.
This has always been my absolute favorite Ray Charles song. It was also my parents favorite.
Thank y'all so. Appreciate it.
Nice. You went back to the 50s for some more much deserved Ray Charles. Great cover. CCR also did a great cover several years later that I think you will enjoy. Some more core Ray songs that I don't think you have done yet are What'd I Say, Hit The Road Jack and America The Beautiful.
One of my favorite Ray Charles songs is "Greenbacks". It's one of his earliest records with Atlantic.
ray charles was the coolest ever.
Ok. You need to have Xmas in July. Ray Charles' "Spirit of Christmas" will melt your heart. Jay have some tissues handy. Mom's gonna cry. You will "water up."
Hit The Road Jack
Thanks for getting back to this great pioneer! A lot of soul and pop and even rock was built around Ray's "rockhouse" groove. Other fabulous Ray Charles classics to check out include "Hit the Road Jack," "Let's Go Get Stoned," "I've Got a Woman," and of course the all-time classic "What'd I Say," parts I and II. And one more: The beautiful love ballad "Come Rain or Come Shine."
One of my favorite Ray Charles songs his cover of "One Mint Julep" It's an instrumental with Ray playing organ with orchestra done in 1961. There were a lot of really good instrumentals in the 50's and 60's that you should check out.
You should watch his biopic, Ray, as you mentioned. It's reflects the times he came up in, hotels that would let him play but not let him stay, and his struggle. He had some bad managers, but his big struggle was with heroin. It hurt him and the ones he loved. But he overcame and lead his best life.
Got two stink faces! I love that young people are mining music and loving the sounds.
Thr Cosby Show, 1986 I believe. Cliff's parents' 49th wedding anniversary. This song was the centerpiece of one of the greatest and funniest musical scenes in television history. Rudy doing the woman's part, Theo with the first line, and Cliff with the gut busting ensing to it. Absolute comedy perfection.
Can't do Ray Charles without hearing "What'd I Say" and "Hit The Road Jack"
Hallelujah! I love Her So is a great one as well!
Absolutely -- please do more Ray Charles! He is a legend ❤
Great song, talented artist! Ya can’t go wrong with Ray! Next, check out “I Got A Woman,” released in 1954. ✌️
Listen to Busted, I Can't Stop Loving You, What I Say the full version, Born To Lose and Still Crazy After All These Years. They are all great songs.
Come Rain or Come Shine the 7 minute live from Paris version. Everyone should have that song in their life.
Georgia on my mind is the official state song. Those back- up girls were known as "Johnny Girls". J, please tell me that's a Big MOMMA THORNTON shirt you're sportin'.She of. "They Call Me Big MOMMA 'Cause I Weigh 300 Pounds" fame.Might want to play that one guys.
If you watched The Blues Brothers on your movie channel…, then you’ve seen Ray Charles… His acting performance as Ray, from Ray’s Music Exchange, is a classic moment from the film…
Now you guys can react to the live version of Ray Charles doing this song!!!
Great track by Ray , he has done some great tracks . Another one is 'I can't stop loving you'-Colin Ward
I love Ray Charles, he is legendary! The movie, Ray, is so amazing and Jamie Foxx really transforms himself in that Oscar winning role! Ray's life was filled with sadness and tragedy but this man overcame the odds and became a musical icon. The woman's vocals did remind me of that classic Cosby Show episode when they performed this song and Rudy (the youngest daughter) lip synched that part. 💖💖
His biopic is amazing! You two should definitely check it out! Enjoy💟!! ✌️y'all !
The mess around ... excellent Ray Charles song
Love some old Ray Charles.
This is actually a song written and first sung by Napoleon Brown Goodson Culp in 1957 a year before this version by Ray Charles was released. Napoleon Brown Goodson Culp went by the stage name of Nappy Brown. His original version did not reach the charts. Ray Charles version reached the Hot 100 in 1959. James Brown also did a version of this song. Ray's version is the most well known version. His style and voice along with Margie Hendrix is just a Soulful Wow! For me when you hear Margie you remember you have heard this song before somewhere. I was born in the early 60's and yes I have heard this many times before but not on the radio and way before the Cosby Show from the 90's. I believe my first time hearing this was listing to my parents 45's as a early teen in the mid 70's. It was one of my Dad's records. Children today need to go and listen to their parents music collection when they reach a certain age. I think it is less done today than in the past. When I was 13 or 14 I could not wait to get my hands on their records when they allowed me to borrow and listen. I knew the 60's music from the radio myself but the late 40's and 50's music. I thank them and appreciate them for allowing me to have that experience and memory of sitting in my bedroom listening on my own with my first stereo.
There is a lot of good bio-pics of singers of the 50's & 60's.
The movie Ray is a must see!!
as an 1980's kid and the self-proclaimed sixth Huxtable child, i take ownership to this song no matter what people may say. i can't help but think of that episode of The Cosby Show whenever i hear this. "Baby!!! Baby!!! Baby!!" i still watch The Cosby Show and love the nostalgic feelings it gives me and this song will forever be part of that.
You still haven’t heard his most popular song, it’s called What I’d Say. You will love it!
If I remember correctly, the woman doing the Janis voice, is little Rudy Huxtable (Cosby Show). :)
Jamie Foxx was approved by Ray Charles himself to play him in the movie about his life. Its a must see!
Have you seen the video from the Cosby Show where the family entertains the grandparents on their 49th Anniversary.with this song? Its hilarious. They do justice to this song. Its really a must see. Next Ray Charles song to do is, "Hit The Road Jack" Yes Jay, you should see the movie about Ray Charles' life. Jamie Foxx nailed it.
Yep. We all heard it on the cpsby show. Love this song
