So, Some Issues with the Widebody... - Sky-gea build: Part 15

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Part 15 of the Stagea GTR Conversion. In this video I try out a new method and make mistakes so that you don't have to.
In recap, jointing compound works great as a plug for a one off part like my mx5 fastback roof where the plug is skinned in fiberglass and then the final product is filled and sanded. But for a plug that you intend to make a mould from, jointing compound is far too soft to get good details from and so it's better to stick with auto body filler.
If you're interested in supporting me you can find all of my fiberglass products on the official Tofu Auto Works website.

    Part of trying new things is that occasionally you'll try something that doesn't work, that's how development works. It's great that you are honest and share the failures as well as the successes because it makes what you do real to the people that think things always turn out perfectly first time. You have the patience of a saint doing this filling & sanding! Keep up the great work!

    Yup. I'm always happy to put my mistakes out there as well if it helps other people not to make them. Plus this was actually something that I was really curious about when I made my original mx5 widebody years ago. Shaping the whole thing with body filler was a workout and I wanted to know if this gib plaster would be good for this sort of plug making. Now I know.

    Cheers mate. There has been a lot of interest but I've not fully opened up to taking pre-orders yet since we've still got a lot of work left to go into the design. (Figuring out how many pieces the moulds will be, how to handle the rear fenders, design for the rear lip etc...) I didn't really want to lock anybody in until the design is finalized and I have a good idea what the price will be. I'm also working with a team in the US about producing these over there to hopefully make international shipping much cheaper. Local orders from NZ and Aus will still be handled by me, but everything else will most likely be sent from the States.

  • @TofuAutoWorks

    @TofuAutoWorks

    11 ай бұрын

    I feel the issue with this filler is that the outer surface of it is never really stable. It's always super soft and powdery and so even if I tried to skin it, the fiberglass probably wouldn't bond to it. You also probably wouldn't want to skin it again because it's already pretty much at final dimension and you want the outer layer to be one homogenous material. It's a real pain when you're sanding through body filler and then all of a sudden you hit fiberglass.

  • @vehiclenomad5358

    The jointing compound I use is pre mixed and it actually dries pretty hard. I haven’t made a a mold from it yet but using it to design has been a major plus. And I plan on using aluminum foil as a surface just to make sure the joint compound doesn’t affect the fiberglass resin

I tape it too for reuse

    Could you have put another layer of 80 gsm over it and then a final layer of filler? Also, (as I'm sure you're aware) yellow/gold body filler sands very easily as well, especially if you hit it before it fully hardens during initial shaping. But it's also significantly more expensive.

    Hi mate, why don't you use fibre glass filler, if you can't buy it in your country, make your own, mix up some normal auto body filler with hardener then separately mix up some fibreglass resin with hardener and add them together about two thirds filler to one third resin, it is hard and smooth with no air bubbles if you don't mix in to much air when mixing it together, hope it helps Darren

  • @TofuAutoWorks

    @TofuAutoWorks

    11 ай бұрын

    Fiberglass filler is better for a smoother / glazing layer where you want it to sand a little harder to give you more precise control over the lines. That's sort of the opposite of what we're after here. With this the goal is to build up a very quick layer that can be sanded easily to save time on shaping. Remember that none of this plug is staying on the car so it doesn't matter how thick the filler is or what it's made out of.
