Not sure if you knew this, but Irene isn't in the movie "Flashdance" she co-wrote and sang the theme song, which was a monster hit. Jennifer Beals and a dance double are in the movie. Irene did star in the film "Fame" as Coco Hernandez. She sang a few songs in the film. You should definitely check out the movie. It is at turns gritty, heartfelt, heartbreaking and inspiring. Irene also sings the moving ballad "Out Here On My Own" . Both songs were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song, "Fame " won. Irene was also the original Sparkle in the film of the same name. She will be truly missed.

Just wanted to clarify: I think you two got the idea that the woman dancing in the video for Flashdance was Irene Cara. She was the singer on the soundtrack, but the female lead in Flashdance was Jennifer Beals, and Beals herself had body doubles for the dancing. In the final dance sequence (which is primarily what you see in that video), there is not only a dancer doubling for Beals, but also a gymnast for the leaps and even a 16-year-old boy who did the break dancing.

The playlist in my car is on random and yesterday Fame popped up. I hadn't heard it in a long time and I thoroughly loved that part of the car ride. I had no idea this lovely soul had passed and I guess maybe this was the universe tapping on my window saying " hey, pay attention". You always cheer and root for someone born in your year cause this is your generation. I remember her on The Electric Company and when the movie Fame came out I thought she was just breath-taking. When Flash Dance was released, you knew she was the real deal. Amazing performer and person; she will be missed by all.

Thanks for this great tribute. Although Irene Cara's fame peaked in the 80s with Flashdance and Fame, she had a long career. She had rolls in the great mini series Roots and many other shows in the 70, including the PBS show The Electric Company in the early 70s. She continued to record and release music well into the 21st century and, although she was no longer a household name, those of us who grew up with her in the 70s and 80s remember her. I was saddened to hear the news of her passing. You should do a reaction to the Fame movie.

I watched this movie 3 times when it came out. Great songs, brilliant, raw performances, with a very real 1980s New York as a backdrop. Irene Cara was as good an actress as she was a singer-songwriter. She was such a part of our lives! Watch "Out Here On My Own" from the movie. She starts softly and then belts it out. No accompaniment except for the piano, which she plays herself. I'm completely heartbroken she's gone. Too soon, too soon.

If memory serves me correctly, this song was not only the theme song for a movie, but it was always so the theme song for a TV show. Both were about students that went to a high school for performing arts. I think you should take a chance on the movie when you have some time, I don’t think you will be disappointed. Great reaction.

I started training in dance when I was just 2 years old (late 70s) and Fame revolved around the performing arts high school in NYC. So when it came out in the early 80s, it was our anthem! Little shorties dancing around to and singing, Faaammme! Flashdance (What a Feeling) soon followed, and we were just as obsessed. Literally, she provided the soundtrack to this tiny dancer’s favorite memories. 💗

Incredible singer (RIP Irene!) and an amazing song. The movie Fame is a must-watch on your 80's journey.
