The unique feature of this mod is that all the characters aren't just extras who get killed quickly and you're the 'mega skilled one'. It's far more interesting that way. They're humans and so is the protagonist.

To everyone theory crafting in the comments let me clear some stuff up for you. 1. You most definitely do not play as Eli or his wife. You are killed in a nuclear explosion and rejected by G-man for aiding and abetting the xen alien. Not to mention the player model is quite clearly white and you are referred to as "sir" at multiple points. Details I very much doubt James overlooked. 2. Barney isn't mentioned in the final screen. Candidate one is infact Alyx this is a reference to the HL2 episode 3 "script" posted by Mark Laidlaw. Barney escapes Black Mesa before G-man can nab him. "he is described as being "out of range" in the end game summary, Gordon Freeman is listed as "hired," and Adrian Shephard is listed as "detained""

The only reason why people resume to believe it’s Mrs.vance is because you go to the dormitories, and the bed is meant for 2 with the crib being placed at the foot of the bed. She died at BM but it is unknown how. Honestly is hard to understand how Eli could of maintained this relationship if she wasn’t in the same field and building complex as Eli to have a child. It can be argued that she was evacuated off base but it doesn’t explain why alyx was left behind. Unless she was shot by the military or killed by an alien, it’s hard to say that the games default voice lines for sir are eligible enough to disqualify this theory. What do you call a female officer in the military, with respect to the rank it’s “Sir” you do not say “mam”. It’s hard to say that these security guards are just regular citizens with cop training, Calhoun and several other instances prove that they are a par above cops. You can argue some of them have military experience. The Alien lieutenant and Gman chose Candidate 12 for testing if not for opportunistic observation. Both of them prove they have knowledge of the future when they both make a move on Eli’s daughter. Both of them are trying prevent or maintain a timeline which arguably deduces they’re from the future. The Xen alien was a friendly and the vorts response to freeman in the 2nd game verify this theory with acts of friendliness and brotherhood after they were freed from the nihilanth. I still sit in the “it’s her mother” camp.

@@IcarusPanopticon True, but yeah, the NPC is not a hero for long, in the end during the carpark ambush, it's all going back to you being alone and you're the real "hero" for this route. With HEV or not, if that person isn't taken any interest by Gman for the task, they would still be killed. You without an HEV suit could barely survive those unbelievable disaster. Could you find it pretty weird? It's like someone is trying to protect you from getting killed or something; which is totally Gman. But yeah right after all the mess the protagonist got into, I'm pissed because how Gman easily terminate him away because he is no match for the next task just like Freeman and Shephard. I know Barney Calhoun didn't take as a candidate by Gman but I could say he didn't because he knows that Calhoun will be the key just like Gordon in the future too for the uprising.

Jolly has such good timing, its like the NPCs are actually listening to his voice.

I really hope in Candidate Twelve, they really do the nuclear ending well.

I think my favorite part of this mod is that it recycles that bridge section several times, but each time you cross it again, you get a different snapshot of how the war against Xen is going. First there's nobody Then the Marines are marching in to save the day with jets and tanks and such And then towards the end, the marines are completely overwhelmed and running like hell.

I feel the same. HECU first arrives and there's confidence that the facility can be retaken and they'll save everyone, then the army digs in to hold and fortify positions as it now appears that Black Mesa won't be liberated so easily, and finally, they're falling back and morale's dwindling.

In the good old GoldSrc engine, when a security guard is inputting a code, he is the source of the beeping sound and you can actually see his mouth open each time the beeping sound is made because the game treats it as part of his speech. One of the funny quirks of the engine.

Mr Friendly wasn’t actually removed because of that. One of the abilities the enemy had was knocking off Gordon’s glasses and making the screen blurry and hard to see. Valve wasn’t able to make this effect happen in the engine however, so that’s why Mr Friendly was scrapped.... of all things.

I think the greatest element of this mod, to me, is the idea that you get such a different point of view of Black Mesa. It manages to change the rythm and it is not shy to put you in the boots of some scientist who is rather low on the food chain, what with the military, black ops, and aliens running around, not even mentioning the HEV-equipped guards or god forbid, Freeman.

Its original intention was that it would eat corpses to explain the disappearance of bodie, though part of it was to also be some sort of sex machine. Sir friendly's code was allover the place and so he was scrapped. But now with the technology, I hereby demand a fully functioning sir friendly with the special details.

I pay good money for this mod rather than Hunt Down the Freeman. The storyline is incredible, and feels a lot like playing a mute Gordon Freeman from Half Life. And the game really tries to make you feel like the secondary character in the game, not having Hev suits and outclassed by a stronger chad Barmey. But then you get into the final act where you took down the behemoth, only for the gman to remind you of your place left you to die. And I am still confused of the borealis part, but man this is amazing.

The thing is, you didn’t even really take down the behemoth, you just got the final hit in. Tons of soldiers and tanks were constantly shooting it, you just got lucky as hell they weakened it down

@@Super-xs5gq The *Gargantua can shrug off anything that isn’t an explosive or energy-based weapon. The only things that can hurt it are the RPG, bombs, the Tau Cannon and Gluon Gun. The only things that hurt it through all those sequences were the tanks and that one APC with a rocket battery on it. Not much actually hurt it before the main character dumped nearly all of his uranium into the damn thing.

The Faceless Gamer the alien is actually the king pin, a cut enemy who is on par of intelligence of gman and does similar things like gman. In fact it’s believe that the king pin is one of gman’s rivals. The king pin takes people as it sees beneficial to its goals i.e getting rid of gman. It was most likely trying to recruit the player and couldn’t due to gmans intervening

So the plot of the mod was you and a psychic Xen alien with precognition trying to stop the g-man, and the visions that you get are the alien trying to warn you about the future and using you to try and stop it by saving Alyx from the G-man. Pretty cool.

We already know that G-man is going to win because HL2, so its got this Halo Reach thing going for it where its a prequel where you already know ahead of time that these characters are totally boned but you still want to root for them even though in the back of your head you know they are pretty much doomed. I kind of like those kinds of stories so I rather liked this mod, especially since it takes a bit to figure out exactly what is going on as well so there is a mystery aspect to it that I like.

Jo291 Jordan Well yeah, but he always has a use for people. He wouldn’t just flat out kill you. The ending STATES that you are very useful. So was Eli Vance. He lets his pawns live until they outlive their usefulness. If you’re able to be compared to GORDON FREEMAN and Adrian Shepard, you’re pretty fucking talented and far from expendable.

From what I've gathered; though the mod maker was working with existing voice lines, one might be able to interpret the Nameless Xen Alien (Might just call it "Kingpin" for now, due to the namesake of the model they used for it) saying "Slaves... We are slaves..." as some kind of sympathy for the player. That perhaps it understands that much like the Alien's race was enslaved by the Combine, the player would no doubt soon find themselves 'employed' by the G-man (perhaps from Kingpin's perspective, it is not much different from slavery). As a result, in addition to seeking out the player's help in thwarting the G-man's plans, it actually wished to 'free' the player too. Which unfortunately resulted in its demise (there is undoubtedly a reason Kingpin's mysterious crystal that allows the player to be transported/contacted by the creature lingered around even after it extracted Vance). Though ontop of that, I believe as we've observed from the player's first encounter with Kingpin, the G-man is constantly surveying the player, and thus Kingpin's sympathy for the player, and partial reliance on the player's abilities would inevitably lead G-man to uncover the impromptu escape attempt and ultimately destroy the alien as opposed to simply warding it off like his first encounter with it. Quick additional mini-theory/on a limb speculation; Perhaps in echoes, 'Kingpin' is in fact some kind of subconscious will left over from the Nihilanth's defeat that made one last ditch effort to thwart the G-man. Perhaps the crystal shard the player touches is not unlike the one that caused the entire Black Mesa incident to begin with, except, "Kingpin" knows how to use it correctly. Which would explain why it becomes vulnerable when it is shattered by the G-man, and basically dissolves into light when "Kingpin" was killed.

ExE Boss I feel it is more likely that it would be mid game if it were to happen as they were in a chopper headed there at the end of ep2. Obviously the chopper would be shot down or something because things are never easy for freeman but I doubt it would take the whole game to get there. That said I really hope that if 3/ep 3 ever ARE made that Chell joins the group, and you get to use both portals and the gravity gun, because who wouldn’t want to drop enemies off cliffs or launch barrels at them through a portal.

Kthegreat "Grimly, Alyx and I armed the Borealis, creating a time-travelling missile, and steered it for the heart of the Combine’s command center." the dyson sphere is only mentioned later as something gordon freeman observes, "I caught a cosmic view of a brilliantly glittering Dyson sphere." plus, I don't see why it would be particularly useful to destroy a single dyson sphere, a civilization such as the combine probably has lots of those already, it would be more useful to instead cut the head off the snake

One thing I find weird about this mod is that everyone assumes you play as Eli Vance's wife Azian. That's actually not true. You literally have a male scientist as the player model if you go into third person with cheats. And most of the characters refer to you as sir throughout the majority of the mod. Also, I'm pretty sure if you look closely inside the bedroom closet after Gman talks to you there is a mangled corpse inside it meaning that Azian was killed by a Xen creature, possibly the Kingpin that you see moving towards Alyx in her baby crib before Gman kills it and rescues Alyx. And the visions you see are a result of the Kingpin's influence over Candidate Twelve which is why Gman leaves you to die by the nuke.

Its time for the community to make Bloody Half Life 3 themself We got some amazing modders out there? Some working on Black Mesa as we speak. Others making mods such as this. Some others again making standalone games using Source. I mean, FFS, if Valve doesnt give it to us, the community sure as hell will Oo I was kind of hoping when I saw "Borealis" that this turned into a long game that would take on some of Half Life 3s unofocial story o-o

They appear to be regaining interest in game design, which would, in turn, mean that Half Life is reaching its much awaited conclusion. I, for one, can't wait to jizz my gamer spirit onto this franchise and do a full replay once HL3 finally releases. This last tease really got me going for another rodeo.
