We're playing a Half-Life Cut content recreation mod, Half-Life: Absolute Zero, with one of the original level designers from Valve Software, Brett Johnson. Mr. Johnson worked at Valve from 1996 until 1999, and was responsible for most of the design of Anomalous Materials, Unforeseen Consequences, Surface Tension, the multiplayer map Stalkyard, among many other things. We play through his sections of this recreation mod, judging it's accuracy, and telling stories of what Valve was like back in the 90s.
This one is special, thank you Brett.

So amazing to read the comments here. You guys are awesome! Some notes: "Named the game" - 😆 in a roundabout way, yes. It's not like I walked in and said "hey everyone, here's the name!" 🤦♂ @1:55 The guy circled is actually Dario. (I'm the guy with the black shirt and folded arms above Mark and Kelly.) I didn't do the office complex (I believe those were largely John's levels) IIRC, In the final game I did pre and post labs, most of the topside most of the alien world, Stalkyard and TFC The Hunted. Keep in mind, most, if not all, levels were touched by multiple designers at some point.

Brett is so charming, very wholesome to see his face light up whenever he recognizes something. This interview effortlessly transcends Niche Interest and becomes a cool and humble dude explaining how games were made and how much passion went into them. Awesome work Tyler!

I would genuinely watch an 8-hour video with just Mr. Johnson talking about level design.

Same. What a magnetic video.
This is going to be a historic video.
Damn, he radiates passion for his craft and fellow devs! That is not something you see often these days in game development. So refreshing :D

This is honestly amazing. so much history of half life just got uncovered. i would love to see this for the HL2 betas
The concept of playing to cut-content recreation with the original dev is just amazing. More of this kind of stuff please!

100% going to. Hearing so much inside info about such an iconic game is awesome. Thank you Brett for sharing so much.
This will be a timeless video. A great interview indeed. Hope you can chat as well to the others devs.
This is so cool to see. The original look of it, the BTS, and just the love put into this game. Thanks for editing this.
I wish every game could have an official cut-content restoration team like Halo has.
I was watching Dario Casali's 25th Anniversery Half Life Walkthrough and it was so amazing to hear these facts from Brett. I could co-relate many of them to what Dario himself was sharing. Really amazing experience
Greatest video you’ve dropped in a long time Tyler
I love this video, Tyler. Every bit of editing you did to clarify which person was being talked about or explaining what a certain term means; this is a really special video for any Half-Life or Valve historian fan; truly well done. Bravo for getting Brett to exclusively share all of this with us; what an awesome guy!
7:26 Makes so much sense that the twisting elevator is inspired by Myst!
Please make more stuff like this. The atmosphere in this video is so relaxing and chill
This was a treat! I'll have to write down that 2nd stream in my calendar if it happens!
"We're not making a funny game." God, even Valve pretended like their game was completely serious for a while.
cut content, alphas and developer interviews (specially from 90's games when 1 guy could do a lot) are always super interesting, keep them coming tyler
amazing video! watching this on the 25th anniversary and its so cool to hear someone who worked on it from the start. thanks for this!
This is awesome! First TK-Mantis interviewing Bill Cain, and now Tyler interviewing Brett Johnson?? What a week!
I am wondering if it's possible to do the same thing with other HL devs, maybe even HL2 and the episodes. Information on behind the scene development is always something I am ready to hear and watch. And with Half-Life, it could even lead into making amazing mods based on these developers info. Maybe I am asking much, but you think you can get in touch with other developers and designers Tyler? I know this sound silly of me, yet no harm is asking, right?
Shout out to the modders and Brett for their wonderful creations. Thanks to Brett and all the developers who are willing to talk to us and answer our pressing questions. And of course you too Tyler for the video, yes I would like more.
this is freaking awesome. i know valve interviews are hard to come by but even just lifting back the curtain just a little bit into the pasted was such an rich and wholesome experience. great vid tyler
This is such a treat, thanks Tyler and Brett. Brett seems like a really great guy, confident in his accomplishments yet humble and happy to shine the spotlight on others. So much insight into the Valve culture in this video, looking forward to more based on that teaser at the end 😊
Interesting to see the thought process and evolution behind some aspects, like the hallway details just being a spontaneous thing, "Oh, that guy did that" or the chair animations and it having a long-term lasting impact on the games legacy and its atmosphere.
This was incredible! Thank you for putting this together.
I really liked this video! The rotating elevator! I felt the Myst influence on that elevator way back when I first played half life, and hearing him say that's where the influence came from had me jumping out of my chair pointing at the screen!
Honestly this is exactly the kind of content I look forward to most from this channel. I've been watching since Epistle 3 and this is one of the most exciting videos since.
11:45 That is one of the things I find especially amazing about Valve. All their employees are able to do something. Even Marc Laidlaw made maps for HL2 during its devolopment and he is just a writer. Also, I just noticed: he is wearing a Black Mesa shirt. Absolutely lovely.
This reminded me why I subscribed to you many years ago. Nice editing too. Great to see you put so much emphasis on what your guest has to say.
Man i love these kind of videos, i would love to see more devs having a discussion about the development process, it's awesome
Super cool, love the enthusiasm
What an amazing interview! Thank you, Tyler
this is so wonderful and inspiring. so cool to hear Bretts perspective
" I NAMED THE GAME" Is the biggest flex
This is probably one of your best videos so far Tyler! Fantastic work!
Fascinating, thank you and great job.
Great video. Nice editing and wonderful insight from Brett
Amazing Video! Great work Tyler and thank you Brett!
this was so cool, there's not much content like this out there, keep it up
Definitely need more content like this. What a great interview opportunity.
This was great. I always love hearing about the process on games that I am super passionate about. To hear the process from the horses mouth was so interesting. Thank you so much for the work you do, Tyler.
this was brilliant Tyler, thanks for the amazing stuff
Great Interview Tyler, defiantly wanna see more incite into game development. This was kinda like the dev commentary you would see built into the Valve games.
This is a really great video and I really appreciated the added context for people not familiar with developing a game on the engine.
I want more of this, Tyler. And I would also like more content about Valve as a workplace if you have material for that. And thanks for making videos for so long! I have been following you since 2018 or so. You are a top tier journalist. Your channel is a gem.
So great and wholesome. Best vid I've seen from you in a bit!
Wow, this was fantastic. Thanks for bringing him on.
Glad you're not only reuploading this stream, but making a video out of it for the main channel. It was _so_ damn good, and it deserved to be seen by way more people. Really hope Brett is able to do another one at some point.
This is awesome, thanks for editing down, I had no idea you did it!
This is really interesting stuff. Keep on doing this
This vídeo is pure love. Amazing! Thanks!
Great work on the video! Always amazed to see how Valve went trough the design process inventing something so impactful.
This is so good. Love the passion and resourcefulness of this kind of development.
I love this style of video. Seeing more like this would be amazing.
I love this kind of content, thank you!
Amazing video tyler, I’d love more of these!
Excellent interview, thank you!

Such a cool video and Mr. Johnson seems so cool. Happy you could interview him!
love this type of content, Thank you
Appreciate these videos too much Tyler!
Great to see some long form content back on the channel
This, the Secret Tape documentary and Darios playthrough give me completely new view on the classic game.
Loved the vid! Brett casually mentioning that he basically named Half-Life Half-Life was perfect haha
I loved this video, love seeing devs being talked to but don't have time to watch full stream.
This is one of the coolest things you have blessed the internet with, gj dude.
Awesome vid! Love this type of content.
Amazing video, thanks man!
dude, this is crazy! I really want some more now! great stuff
This is awesome! Interview Dario!
Enjoyed this. Thanks to you both, especially interesting to have Brett Johnson involved and spending his time to discuss this sort of thing, an interesting perspective for sure.
Wonderful video, thanks for this!
this is insane i love this so much
Stuff like this is super interesting, got me to tune in for the first time in a long time
amazing work tyler
Great stuff Tyler. 👏 love it
This is exactly what I'm here for! Haven't watched your channel In a while, but in my opinion, interviews are what you do best.
i like these kinds of videos, this is actually crazy
I played through the Canals to open that elevator to the Office Complex. The mod made sure you're always starving for ammo; the design ideas definitely felt a lot more claustrophobic than what it is now.
nice video , gracias me encanta ver este tipo de entrevistas
THIS IS AWESOME, more like this PLEASE
Thank you Tyler!
awesome. would love to see more interviews!
Love this! I really hope to see someday, Gaben
Very interesting interview!!
Cool insight, love this
