She is korean but she speaks English so she doesn’t have an obvious accent when she sings in english. Particularly in the case of this amazing lady, not only is she technically on another level to most singers, but her ability to emote & tell a story through a song, regardless of the language, make her xtra special, it feels like she has a direct line to your soul, so don’t ever be put off watching a performance of hers on her native Korean because regardless of whether you happen to click on a link with subtitles or not, it doesn’t matter, trust me, I am English & even after years as an admirer of this wonderful woman, I have never not been moved by a performance of hers when I have had no idea of the lyrics of the song. In fact, many people have commented on the fact that just like me, even when subtitles are provided, they have found themselves so captivated by her that they haven’t even looked at the subtitles. Please don’t be thinking that a performance of this quality must be the peak of her powers because that would be a mistake because this is just ‘normal’ Sohyang, she has performance after performance after performance that’ll blow your socks off & the only thing that really puts them in order of which performance is best is quite simply personal taste. I have been following both Sohyang & Dimash for more than 5 years & I don’t think I am ready for a duet nevermind unleashing them together on a world which isn’t yet familiar with either of them 😂

Sohyang (pronounced as “So-Young”) to me is the greatest singer I’ve ever heard in my 73 years. She not only a great singer but a beautiful person both inside and out. She first began singing in her local community, with no aspirations of pursuing a career as a professional singer. She was offered numerous contracts from major record companies, but she turned them down, because it would interfere with the plans God had for her. She is a devout Christian and has said that her goal in life is to use her voice to comfort people who are going through difficult times. She knows what hard times is like, her parents divorced when she was in her third year of high school and due to this, she experienced a lot of financial difficulties and was often very sad and she said that it was music that helped her through these difficult times. At the age of twenty she got married and soon after was diagnosed with uterine cancer, which she was able to survive, and she gives the credit to God. She is also an author of children books since 2013. Another thing is that she does all the arrangements for the songs she sings. SHE IS THE BEST

Tho married, I have never seen her with a wedding ring. And the suggestion that she ought to work with Dimash is one I don't believe would come to much bc they have very different styles. Sohyang has a pop, blues, gospel and jazz approach. Her ornamentations are somewhat R&B by dint of the singers she draws from-Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion et al. Dimash is classically trained and his approach is more vocal-centric. And indeed his fame is mainly due to his vocal prowess not so much his interpretation of a given composition. Case in point; the Rachmaninov inspired Eric Carmen hit "All By Myself" that he covered was for me, more vocal technique than the vision put forward by the composer, which more often than not far exceeds the singer primarily bc it's often about our human condition and the relevance to the _summun bonum_ (the Divine). I may have a bias toward blues vocal inflections which draws me Sohyang more than Dimash, it doesn't mean I think less of classical music it's just that for me the appeal of classical music is the compositions of the greats not the classical opera singers themselves.

@@rachmann516 Sohyang does like rings ... on all fingers. I asked a Korean if wedding rings are worn on the left hand, second finger from the end, like in the English speaking world. He says, yes, it is the same in South Korea. I believe I have seen Sohyang wearing her wedding ring in at least one music video but it is a rarity. 💖💘

There is no doubt in my mind that Sohyang is the greatest female singer in the world. You often hear that Dimash is the king, and Sohyang is the queen. This classic by Simon and Garfunkel is a good sample of what she does. Her goal is comforting people, and in service of that goal she writes the arrangement (yep that's all her doing) and uses her voice to take people to a better place with inspiration. She is from South Korea, and some of us have been begging for a duet from her and Dimash for years. This show is called Immortal Songs and is Korea's version of Singer in that it is a friendly competition among professional singers. For another reaction to her, I highly recommend Lean on Me, the old Bill Withers song. BTW, did you seriously not know Bridge Over Troubled Water? It was song of the year and album of the year when it was released. You may be too young to remember the original. It was released in 1970.

GREAT!! reaction. You have witnessed a small sample of the flexibility in the voice of the phenomenal So Hyang. This video is from 2015, when she was years old. So Hyang is 44 years old. Her vocal range is still ridiculous, and her breath control remains insane. In case you're not aware, 'Bridge Over Troubled Water', is a classic song written in 1969 by Paul Simon. It was recorded in 1970 by Simon and his singing partner, Art Garfunkel. Together, they formed the folk duo, Simon and Garfunkel. Over the years, this song has been recorded by numerous artists, including Aretha Franklin and Elvis Presley. BTW, So Hyang, her husband, along with some assistants, arrange every aspect of her live performances; the music, backing vocals, staging, etc.

Travis, I'm surprised you aren't familiar with this old Classic. Nevertheless, your reaction was great. The important thing is you are in Sohyang's World now. I assume you want more. Enjoy the journey. She is South Korean. Her name is pronounced 'so yong'. Just a bit of history about this elegant and beautiful lady. She started singing in church and grew up singing Gospel music. She learned to speak American English watching the Disney Channel and learned Pop music by listening to American singing stars. She has had no formal training except for a brief time with a vocal coach in the Nineties. She survived cervical cancer at the age of twenty and has devoted her heavenly voice to comforting people who are struggling. Sohyang speaks five languages. She does the musical arrangements for her live stage appearances including the musical adaptation, the chorus and orchestra, the staging and lighting, and costumes. She is also an author and lectures on Music and Voice at University. There is more, but this could become a book. Next? kzread.info/dash/bejne/hmiJ26uGm8ffZLA.html "I Have Nothing" [I Am a Singer Legend]. Cheers.

We all wonder if Sohyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. 😇 We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. Her voice is, as one person described it, like liquid gold. Perfection in clarity and pitch, and she doesn’t fade in the upper octaves, which is startling when you hear her hit those 5th and 6th octave notes with such _POWER_ it actually gives everyone goose bumps-and makes us bald guys’ hair stand on end! As she says, her voice “is from God.” She does all the musical arrangements herself, with the input of her in-law family and musical assistants, teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks five languages: Korean, English, French, Vietnamese and Chinese, as well as reading Greek! Let me catch my breath. OK. She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work, to strengthen those suffering through difficult times. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all eagerly worked with her when they were in Asia. She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Because of this she is prone to catching pneumonia but has sang perfectly while suffering from it in her live performance of “You Raise Me Up” before Shane Filan of Westlife on South Korean TV: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ppmTrpuolsu7pJs.html She has asked those who love her singing to pray that God keep pneumonia away from her, she has suffered from it on so many occasions. Imagine how she must feel with this coronavirus floating around everywhere! She just turned 44 on April 5, 2022, though in Korean culture she would be 45 because you are deemed to be one year old when you are born. She was about 37 when she sang this version of “Arirang Alone”, their unofficial national anthem based on a 600 year old folk song expressing their desire to reunify north and south: vimeo.com/308253527 After being sick with pneumonia eight times from 2016 through to 2020, and considering giving up singing altogether, she decided to enter a televised singing contest called “King of the Masked Singers” in 2017 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international attention from the performances being posted on KZread. Whitney Houston’s former manager saw her on KZread and showed her to Oprah Winfrey, who brought her to David Foster’s attention. Foster then contacted Sohyang and went to Japan in order to have her perform eight concerts with him at Tokyo’s famous Blue Note Club in late-2018. For those who don't know, David Foster was Whitney Houston's producer for some of her songs, wrote "I Have Nothing," her most iconic song, and is the most famous and influential music producer in the world. He places Sohyang right beside Whitney and the rest of the top tier divas. Here is the interview where Sohyang related the events: kzread.info/dash/bejne/d6WZp8FqnrOTe84.html (Be sure to turn on English subtitles.) Here is the version of “I Have Nothing” Oprah, David Foster, Whitney's former manager and the rest watched on KZread: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hmiJ26uGm8ffZLA.html She preceded it with this blockbuster: vimeo.com/312061203 She could be an international Super Star if she wanted to be but has decided that it would ruin her spiritually, quoting Proverbs 14:12 “There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.” In a South Korean television interview Sohyang conceded that she struggled with her desire for fame for a number of years, going into the basement in her home numerous times and closing the door so she could complain vehemently to God that He was holding her back from becoming famous due to her health problems and other unforeseeable events. Then she later saw a Korean TV drama where the talented daughter of a very successful businessman was positive she would take over when her father retired. But he left the management of the company to a woman she hated, so she had a fit and lay kicking and screaming on the floor. Sohyang says she saw herself in that young woman and then understood that God was keeping her from developing self-destructive character by withholding international celebrity status from her. kzread.info/dash/bejne/pKBhzLpym6XZddY.html (Again, turn on English subtitles.) So as a consequence she does not pursue fame or fortune and actually has no social media presence whatsoever. What can one say about such a person? She is a literal Wonder Woman! And we need about a billion more just like her! And whether Sohyang likes it or not, fame has found her, run her over and then backed up and run over her again! On Oct. 5, 2020, it was revealed that Sohyang turned down _yet another_ contract offer, this time from Sony Music US. www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20200921000995 “Debuting in [the] US was my utmost goal for the past 20 years. But when I got a call from the US agency, I politely rejected, as I realized that what I wanted most was not becoming famous,” she said. “I think singers are very susceptible to arrogance, especially when they hear the screaming from crowds on stage. It can make you feel like as if you’ve become God.” “And I’m perfectly okay with sharing my music via KZread, which can reach tens of millions of people all over the world without making me feel stuck up. Maybe that’s why I was born in this era.” Sohyang is just the most amazing singer, Christian and human being. She is beautiful both inside and out, and so humble and genuine, with a stage charisma, facial expressions and smile that is off the charts. In Korean dictionaries 소향--Sohyang--has several meanings. • First is a type of Korean traditional music. • Second is to burn incense on a burner. • Third is to go toward. But these meanings are rarely used today. Sohyang is also the name of a heroine in a Korean traditional novel. Yet for the definitive answer Sohyang has stated in an interview that her name means "enjoy the light." Her grandmother named her. Please analyze her performance of “Bridge Over Troubled Water”: kzread.info/dash/bejne/dWqdqsptqaXec9I.html Also, please react to her version of “The Power of Love”: kzread.info/dash/bejne/fqaCzbiLoq6dj6w.html Plus this beautiful duet with her friend Lee Hi where they do Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons’ “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You”: vimeo.com/439148918 And this version of her singing “Oh Holy Night”: vimeo.com/322716334 Here she performs “Lean On Me” before Michael Bolton, who called her a vocal “virtuoso” after her performance: kzread.info/dash/bejne/eaqnyaWlnMa0gKg.html Wait until you see her duet of David Foster's “The Prayer” with Jeong Ui Geu: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pKiZj9Nsm9jUoJs.html Her performance of "Fate" in Korean requires no translation: vimeo.com/198161448 And finally “Will You Be There”: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oHaYtdKeqLjemc4.html Here’s an English language interview with her that I’m sure you will enjoy: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gGapwdKmn7remps.html Her English is perfect when she sings and almost perfect when she is doing interviews. OK, I’ll stop gushing now. Well, one more gush. In an interview with a Turkish music producer Sohyang's assistants revealed (a bit to her chagrin, as she is a self-effacing person) that she can hit Eb7 and D7 in practise. However, she never goes above the 6th octave in performances. Since she starts at D3 that is more than a 4 octave range ... so how about them apples???! Here it is: kzread.info/dash/bejne/iKKEo82rqdXfl7Q.html I know, bananas isn’t it? Oh, I just remembered, she is also a published fantasy novelist and has a theological treatise on the Book of Revelation in print. In addition, she is a very good stage actress, which she proved by playing Julie Andrews’ part in the South Korean stage production of “The Sound of Music.” Moreover, she sang the “Moana” part in the Korean version of the Disney film, does the musical vocals for many South Korean television dramas, and is a talented artist and cartoonist. She taught herself English by watching Disney's "The Little Mermaid" "about one hundred times" when she was just a kid, speaks English with a _perfect_ North American accent and has an outgoing and bubbly personality. She can also play the piano and guitar. Is there anything this genius level woman can’t do? Ironically, Sohyang stated in another interview that both she and her in-law family were surprised to discover that she could sing so excellently! Though she is maybe 5' 4" and only about 100 pounds, Sohyang simply transcends the thresholds of music and takes you there with her. She becomes the song when she sings it, and then re-emerges when she is done. An experience like no other. I don’t know what else to say. I’ve spent _entire days_ listening to her, and shed more than a few tears of joy along the way. I really must also compliment the choir, orchestra and audio/video production people Sohyang works with. They are all top notch from what I can see and hear, and that is important to note as these are _essential_ elements of any great musical production. The Korean people are easily as talented as anyone else. As you can see, I am a shameless fan. 😉

The songwriter was Paul Simon from the 60's duo of Simon and Garfunkel. The singers split over ego's at the beginning of the 70's. Had a brief and tempestuous reunion in the 80's with a big concert in Central Park. They have had other appearances over the years but nothing lasting. Paul Simon went on to have hit records writing songs that incorporating sounds from world music. In fact I think he was instrumental in world music become a thing in the U.S. I think I would put So and Morissette of the Philippines as the two best female vocalists on the planet right now. My favorite singer though is a 16 yr.old out of Kazakhstan named Daneliya Tuleshova. Daneliya probably has half the range of either of these women, but her tone and technique are so perfect that she will mesmerize you. I liken her to a Karen Carpenter in tone and ease of manner.

THANK YOU!!, for your style of reacting. It is greatly appreciated that you rewind the video after pausing. That made me become a new subscriber. Even when So Hyang sings in Korean, it is not necessary to understand the lyrics. She is brilliant at conveying the message/meaning of the song. Based on comments, it is better to pull So Hyang videos from Vimeo. They come with English subtitles.

There are great singers and there are great singers and then there's Sohyang she's in a league of her own!! She's a devout Christian and, offcourse, sings for God and for those who are fighting, struggling, suffering in life in hope of bringing them comfort. She has been contacted by several major labels but has politely turned all of them down. She says it's not her thing and further she don't wanna compromise with her faith or herself. I call that integrity.

You should also react to Lara Fabian, Dimash’s idol. In fact Adagio which you recently reacted to was Lara’s song and after the performance you reacted to Lara rang Dimash to congratulate him. When you react to Lara, I would suggest Broken Vow from 2000, kzread.info/dash/bejne/nX52qaWCaMS5dZc.html from the Lara With Love concert, you’ll see the profound influence she has had on Dimash! Dimash’s childhood dream came true in 2019 when he got to sing Ti Amo Cosi a trio with Lara and opera singer Aida at Igor Krutoy’s 65th Birthday Concert in Russia. Igor Krutoy is a famous Russian composer/music mogul (worth 13 billion), who came out of retirement, to work and compose some songs for Dimash when he first heard him sing in 2018. I hope you react to Dimash singing his more recent songs (he’s so much better today, believe it or not!) some written by Krutoy. Dimash/Krutoy a marriage made in heaven. Of course Lara has many songs written for her by Krutoy, which Dimash also sings now, together with the new ones Krutoy wrote especially for him.

She speaks English as well as you or me. Very fluent in about 3 or 4 languages. In my opinion, she is the best female vocalist on the planet. It would not be good for her and Dimash to sing together. Both are known for their range, so it would be like a battle as to which one can sing higher. Not a good match at all. It would be a train wreck. She has a 5 octave range, which goes up to a D7. She never left the 5th octave on this song. She is insanely perfect with insane range. She was taught by Seth Riggs who was Michael Jackson’s vocal coach. She did the rest on her own. She also arranged every cover she sings and if in Korea, she is in charge of her orchestra and the backing singers. She is the master of the entire performance.
