Smooth Cast 320 and Demo/Review

A demonstration of Smooth on Products. In this case it's Smooth-Cast 320, a fast curing 2 part resin and their Universal Mold Release. We're going to use this quite a bit in the Ruined Tower project so here's a first look at how it works and what to look out for. Mistakes and sensor beeps included.

Love the missed mold release moment. ;) I needed the chuckle. The pot life will vary depending on the mass of the resin. As you noticed, it's exothermic and larger amounts will heat up faster. So if your mixing a lot, move quick. :) After you pour it as a slush cast in your case, it will be a thin layer and will slow down the reaction. You'll get closer to the 3 min mark, and even a little bit more if it's really thin. To speed the slush cast, you let it pool in the bottom for a minute to speed it up, and then tip the mold. But don't let it sit too long.... ;) I have found it helpful to cover the high points by inverting the mold so the resin flows over the peaks. Tricky timing though since too early and it will drip/settle back down, and too late and it won't drip enough. You get a feel for it after you've done several casts, but I still have some drips when I'm not paying attention. :) You can judge the timing be the color change. Just as it starts to gel and some areas start to whiten is around the time to try to flip it over. Trick is that some areas are setting up faster than others since some areas are thicker than others. Getting a uniform coating helps with this. But I have never been able to get a uniform coating in all my years of slush casting. It just can't be done. So get it as even as you can and watch the color. Demolding it while it's a little soft makes it easier and allows you to do some shaping for a rock. But if the mold has deep undercuts, you may need to let the resin set up harder to avoid tearing it. Experimenting will be your best friend. And also know that you can heat up the cast with a hair dryer/heat gun and it will soften again if you want to do some shaping later on. You can do this even if it has a thin layer of expanding foam in it - which you will need to slush cast as well, and the foam is a little bit trickier since it expands rapidly. But it can be done. Hope all that helps a little. Good on you for entering the resin casting world! It's a whole new world. I haven't seen anyone cast resin into WS rock molds. Great idea. And it shows you don't need a silicone mold for casting.

I slow-mo yelled, "Nooooooooooo!" as you poured without the mold release... Then the swearing started! haha

Just a heads-up from a first-time plastic resin caster (Smooth Cast 320): if you live in a warm climate (the tropics), the cure is even faster. You have 2 minutes to mix and finish pouring. Next time i'll mix several small batches.

I have used a lot of different resins, one of the best resins from Smooth-on is their Smooth-cast 305, it has a seven minute pot life and a thirty minute de-mold. They don't advertise it to be used for slush casting (roto casting) but it works well for it. Two other great resins are one made by Polytek and is their Easy Flo 120, and the other is from Alumilite and its called Super Plastic resin.

Hi, Great video. But I have one question. How does the smooth cast 320 feel? Because I want to make high quality statues. So would you say it feels like plastic, or can you feel the quality? And I don’t know if you can answer the question, but is it easy to paint the mold? Like with airbrush or brushes. Or do you have to prepare it?

Smooth-on suggest 65D for rotocasting or slush casting. But some suggest the 321. Makes me wondered.

bushbosh Yes but it needs to be compatible with the resin. Manufacturers will normally sell their own colorants. I also have another video that gets more in-depth in resins. kzread.info/dash/bejne/qIOnp8ayhsfNnJM.html
