    How wonderful! I really appreciate these videos. I like Russian equipment very much and want to try some repairs. I draw the line at watches, but cameras I will try. I have a manual, but much easier to see someone doing it in a video.

    Hey, first at all thanks for the vid. I have this camera from my parents. Find it like 15ys ago in buttom of their wardrobe. But as i remember the aperture ring wasnt working already. Now i got myself to the point when i gonna repair it. Q: if i removing the lens cover and grease it would fix the problem? It seems to be only stucked I can see the rust on the aperture blandes. Thanks

    It looks like you need to disassembly the lens block (the central part) if the aperture blades are stuck together. But you can try staring with just attempts to move the ring.

    Hello and thank you for this very valuable video! I wonder if you can answer my question or even make another video in the future. The red dot on my aperture ring does not line up with the F-stops written on the lens cover. As a result I can only guess what aperture the camera is set to. Unfortunately the focusing ring seems to be aligned properly with the distances. Any idea how I might realign these? I have not shot any film in this yet. I have the first role in the camera now so I’m not even sure if it is focusing but should know in a few days Once I have the film developed. Thanks!

    Yes, your camera is out of focus for sure. You'll need to readjust the focus - a tip how realign focus can be found in my Lyubitel video , and I'll do another one soon.

    Hi! Maybe it's stupid question, but I'm stuck. I have two 8M's and in both the stop pin fell out. I have those pins but can't figure out how to put them back in. If it's put from the bottom of the part where it sits on, then the head sticks out and the aperture ring won't fit well. How to assemble it? By force fitting the head from the top?

    Yes, this is just a scaled down Lubitel shutter. So this guide would be relevant for Lubitel cameras too.

    Check the comments here for this issue, I gave the instruction. In general, you have to check your blade actuator - if it is loose, worn, dirty or broken. You can look a book called "camera repair and service" (устройство и ремонт фотоаппаратов) by Maizenberg (Майзенберг) for reference.

    It might be a long shot leaving this comment when you made the video almost a year ago, but I have a similar problem to what you fixed. The end of the wire that you inserted into the arm is correctly attached in my shutter mechanism. However, the other end of that same wire is sticking out and I do not know where to connect it. I would appreciate any help if possible :)

    Hello, I just bought a Smena 8m but it's shutter seems to work incorrectly. When I cock the shutter it slightly opens which would expose the film. Would you happen to know what might cause it?

  • @oldcameraguy

    @oldcameraguy

    Looks like an either damaged, well-worn or just dirty shutter blades. Any way, the tolerances are not there they should be. Disassemble the shutter, give it a nice cleaning bath, tighten all the screws (that's an easy way to fix this). If the blades are damaged... Buy a new camera.

    To begin with, watching an entire video usually helps. Also, SMENA's don't have a built-in flash and can only work with old external high-voltage models (no hotshoe). The flash connector is a simple terminal of a switch which is mechanically pressed by a shutter button, so use multimeter to check if it is closed or not while holding the shutter open in B mode.
