Hey Ed, I am just getting into photography on film. Your videos inspired me, but I never had the courage to try It for myself. Now I scrolled 3 years back to learn about smena 8M which I have at home and It was incredibly useful! Thank you a lot, love your content!

I love my smena m8, got it for about $3 shipped in mint condition with original box and separate rangefinder. I use it the same way, work out the exposure for shadows, and full sun and just adjust the shutter speed as necessary, just remember to change focus. I think this is by far the best value camera I've ever bought.

Hi Dude, been following your videos for a while. First, thank you very much coz you finally enabled me to take the plunge e start developing C-41 at home, and it turned out to be so fun I am now about to start developing E6 :P Second, about the spool, I *believe* it's not original. I got two Kiev's 4a, one from ukraine and another one taken at a local roadside seller here in Napoli. The original spool accepts unmodified film, while the other one (as yours) looks like it's a film canister spool placed in lieau of the original take -up. I modified it with a dremel in order to avoid cutting out too much film :P Peace V Edit : almost forgot: happy easter!

I don't know how much of the film has been shot on this camera, but it seems to me that a lot. Now this camera Smena 8M is mine, it works fine so far, no problems. but damn! I hate this camera!

You're really skilled at using the viewfinder! I've always tried to use it but I just can't get the right framing. 😯 Anyways, you said that your film advance can be moved even if you've only pressed the shutter release (without cocking). This has never happened to my 8M though. Maybe there's something broken with yours?

i love this camera! i don't have to cut my film for it, but i know it depends of that strange plastic tube. i bought it for 7$ + 10$ for ship and i bought for duble exposure, i expose 3 roll and just 1 frame of double was ok xD anyway i think is pretty nice for value, the lens is not plastic (like the more expensive lomography cameras), sincro flash with all the times, focus is easy to set (but also easy to forget to set). i recomand this camera to people that are looking for a lomo one, more cheap, more solid, more settings, better lens of all the plastic lomo cameras and the result are strange as well.

Great video, thank you. I have a piece that has some sort of good spool - you can put a film into it without cutting the leader! But I've never used it and I want to try it now. And when rewinding, do you feel it as the film jumps out of the spool so you can stop rewinding to prevent the film leader disappearing into the canister? I really hate force opening canisters in darkroom, it destroys them (and I don't have a film retriever). I bulk load and want to have usable canisters, not dead ones :D And what about light leaks? Some people say that one should use a black tape to prevent light leaks. I saw that you didn't use any tape and the photos were beautiful, so I think it depends from piece to piece... Some may have light leaks and some do not have them...

You often find these on German flea markets but I‘ve never considered to buy one. Maybe I should give it a try. I like your standpoint not too much think about but have fun. Maybe I could replace my Werra 1 with it, although the lens of the Werra is a bit better. If you‘re interested, reach out and you could compare these.

  • @clausd.7066

The strange pick up spool you show is nothing else but the spool you find inside the film canister, thats why it has just the small slot in the middle. Just carefully cut the slot open down to the bottom of the spool you dont have to cut your film any more. If you loose or ruin the spool you know where to find a replacement 😁

Huh, l have a Smena Symbol which is basically the same camera, with just a couple of diferences, but the lens is the same. I was actually amazed with the results, nice, sharp, contrasty photos with no artefacts, no ghosts, light leaks and such. It's difficult to focus, but once you get the hang of it it's fun.

Eduardo, you don't have the original take up spool but just a spool from ínside a regular 35mm cassette. The original Smena spool takes standard cut film, but if the original spool it is lost, you can replace it with a core of any 35 mm film cassette -- that has the hole in the middle and you need to cut the film start as you explain; from the middle. Thats what is the case in your camera; the original spool has been lost.

Hola Eduardo! Gracias! Que estés bien!

It used to be kind of point-and-shoot. Even photographers in russian newspapers used it for a portability reason just having it in they coat pocket. Every third kid had it at some point of his life. It handling low temperatures well, when Canons and Nikons get frozen. It does not require any batteries. It's only requires You knowledge and experience. And it's not a really big deal when you get a hang of it.

I've been using Smenas 8M and Symbol for almost 10 years now, and to anyone looking into them I strongly recommend the Symbol over 8M if you don't care about multiple exposure. It's very similar but much more convenient to use, with normal built in take-up spool, wind lever (coupled with cocking the shutter), and better rewind knob design which doesn't hurt your fingers every time. It still has the same terrible, inaccurate viewfinder but also the same lens, which in my opinion is fantastic - gives a good balance between actually decent results and that Lomo charm.
