SLX DC vs Tatula SV103: Which is the better skipping reel ? ? ?

Dock skipping is one of the trickiest things to master in bass fishing. Doing it from a kayak is even more challenging. Luckily, todays reels are making this task far less painless and much more fun. In this video, I take two of the most popular reels for skipping baits, and put them head to head, to see which is the better reel for the job at the $200 USD price point. Thanks for watching and let me know what you think about these two fantastic reels.
Gear Used in the Video:
Reels: Shimano SLX DC in 8.2:1 and Daiwa Tatula SV TW103 in 8.1:1
Rod: ALX Zolo Toadface
Line: 50lb Berkley X5 braid on Tatula, 50lb Powerpro on SLX DC
Skipping Jig: Zman Crosseyez flipping jig

    I won both reels myself & have to say it's hard to beat a Diawa t-wing in my opinion both great reels but i use my diawa reel for skipping. Great review!

    If you are not into it yet, dont worry about it. Its actually a pretty big commitment in gear and practice to get comfortable with it imo. Thanks for watching bro.

    Nice vid ... ive never tried a dc but I've skipped both an SV and a lews pro SP (their designated skipping reel) and I have to say the SV is better... I'd luv to get my hands on a dc jus to know for myself

    appreciate the positive comments man. DC is fun for sure, and outperforms sv in other areas imo. But skipping SV is the king.

    If you have no idea what you’re doing, the DC on the 4 setting is probably the easiest. but as soon as you figure out the basic technique that SV spool is 1000 times better. I have owned and used both for this exact purpose, and sold the SLX pretty quick after trying the SV

    I would liken the DC to training wheels, while the SV is like a racing bike. Compared to the SV, the DC definitely does choke out the casting distance IMO. Practice a lot, set the SV to like 8-10 and you can skip a dock all the way back to the shore. Easily 20yds of skipping with the right bait

    Interesting…I’ve never considered dedicating a DC reel to pitching/skipping/etc. But all things considered, the braking on a reel doesn’t really affect whether or not I use it for a given application…at least I’ve never really done that in the past. I just have a metanium on an 844mbr dedicated to work around docks, etc…basic, light-handed braking on a good rod. A good rod makes the bigger difference for me, personally. Guys, if you’re buying really tricked out brakes in order to pull off these techniques, you’re going to get sooooo much better once you just back em off and feel it as you go. Your control will get better and as a consequence, you’ll backlash less. It’s still going to happen regardless of reel. There’s nothing you can do in “close quarters combat” situations. You’re just going to hit a branch or a dock piling sometimes…and skipping has an element of chaos theory to it where you’re *going to backlash* sometimes. I’ve been doing it for decades and still have a “welp…this reel is done for the day” incident at least once a year. BUT, getting your thumb under control will help there, as well.

    I agree with you in theory; however, the braking system really does matter when you're kayak fishing. You're already not as stable, and on a poorer platform than a boat, with less space. These braking systems make it easy to skip, and you know what? That's what you want. Kayak fishing is already hard enough. These reels make skipping a lot more practical from a yak.

  • @fishwithoutfear8970

    If I could only choose one? The tatula sv. You can do so many things with both, but I find the sv is better for skipping, but it's also just a nicer frame for doing things like jerkbaiting, frogging, really any kind of twitch style movement you use with the rod. The tatula is just so palmeable and comfortable in hand, whereas the dc is kind of bulbous.

    Should have used fluorocarbon

  • @fishwithoutfear8970

    @fishwithoutfear8970

    Жыл бұрын

    I actually do skip with fluorocarbon most of the time. But I wanted to use braid because it's LESS forgiving. You mess up with braid that reel is done for the day. Fluorocarbon lets you get away with more.

  • @Davo2233

    @Davo2233

    Жыл бұрын

    @@fishwithoutfear8970 I agree that braid is nearly impossible to get a bad backlash out of , however it’s harder to backlash if you have a clue how to set your reel up. I make as long if a cast with a 3/4 oz trap, peel 5 more yards off then lay tape over the line still on the spool so the whole spool is ruined. Any line with memory is 10 times easier to backlash

  • @fishwithoutfear8970

    @fishwithoutfear8970

    @@Davo2233 I dunno, invisx doesn't have much memory relative to other fluoros and that's all i own at the moment. I might do another skip off in the future now that i own the new zillion. I'll keep fluoro in mind.
