    I turned my resonator into a dobro by raising the nut, and found it hard to master, so I sold it. I've always had a classical guitar, so I guess I was just used to that style of holding and playing. I kind of regret having sold it, after watching this video. I've always loved slide, and this was a great first instructional vid for me. Many thanks, John.

    You don’t have to raise the nut. Just make sure the action is a lion the high side. Keep your eyes out for someone selling their resonator. You can also get a cheap steel string acoustic and start on that.

    I discovered Open D tuning while trying to learn Feeling Bad Blues by Ry Cooder. It just sounds so good in that tuning that I have left one of my guitars in Open D and I'm experimenting and doing almost exactly the slow bluesy stuff you did! You did a marvelous job of bringing it all down-to-earth and not be a show off, John. Nicely done, sir!

    Thank you for this video. My biggest take away from it was the dampening of the index finger, thats something I was completely missing. Matt Smith from D Addario & Co does a slide lesson but the technique he uses to dampen is the fingers on the right hand. I'm gonna practice both and see where it takes me. This was really great thank again Sir.

    Really nice little video, thanks! Just a note to the fresh guitar players out there. The drop D tuning (of course) is key here. Don't be afraid of (de) tuning your guitar. It's a bit scary at first, but you will see, after about the 4th time you tune down (in this case to "D") , then re-tune to your standard E a few times, you will see it actually helps in learning your instrument. And, it impresses people when you get good at it. The big secret is .... it's really not that hard.

    After looking at number of d tuning videos which are all too much talk and theory and starts getting complicated, I'm like nah, next one and the same. Yours easy to understand and be able to practice without too much in your head t. As others have said ,simple,,to the point , which is best way in many things. K.I.S.S. a good saying. Anyhow, really good lesson and be putting it to practice. Cheers BK.

    I learned to play slide with one of those big boxy batteries. Me and my teacher played Stevie Ray Vaughan and he was like, fuck that shit, we can't play a slide song without a slide... So battery it was.

    John thank you so much for this video. I'm a beginner guitar player and even I understood everything you said and I'm just crazy about slide guitar so I immediately started incorporating what you showed here and I'm so excited to have taken the first steps to learning slide! I love everything about your video! Your clarity of voice, your explanations and the awesome playing which is exactly the style i want to learn. What do you call that style? Is it delta blues? And what is that gorgeous guitar! What kind of a cone does it have? How important is it to have a "tri-cone" on a resonator? So many questions!

    You are very welcome Ipuya. I’m playing a Regal. It is not an expensive guitar. I did change the cone to a Quarterman and had a repairman replace the bridge. I have what’s called a spider bridge over a large single cone. Don’t buy something because it’s supposed to be good. Just get an instrument that sounds good and plays well. You might end up spending less than you think. Have fun and thanks for tuning in!

    I play mostly 12 string, so you have too push a little to make all the strings sound. Very fine line there.

    When you go to the g chord or a chord does your damping finger come down first followed immediately by the slide? I get some banging when I go to the 4 or 5 chord unless I slide up to it.

  • @jcurtis30water

    @jcurtis30water

    Developing your touch is important for slide and takes time. My slide and damping finger arrive about the same time. You have to be careful not to bang the slide onto the strings. Let the weight of the slide do the work. Keep working it, you’ll get it.

    @@jcurtis30water I just bought my first guitar; a Gretsch roundneck Boxcar. With the occasional use of a Grover Nut, I should have the best of the pickin' and sliden' worlds. I don't know jack shit about guitar playing but I do know that people like you care enough about the music to make videos for us noobs.....And, that's a good place to start. Thank you.
