Open D tuning is great fun for all levels, from beginners to advanced players on acoustic guitar. This lesson starts by showing the beginner how to play a basic shuffle and then more complicated pieces for the advanced guitarist. Open tunings can be a great way to get into fingerpicking, so it may be something you want to consider. I have done complete lessons on all of the songs played, some of them are from my Patreon catalogue which I am making available here on KZread for the first time. They are, "Have you ever seen peaches" and "I'm so glad". "Rambling on my mind" has proved very popular since I released it in 2018. "Vestapol Blues" and "Simple twist of fate" are on my Patreon page, see the link below.

Thank you for saying "Take your time, no need to rush." Because there are so many adverts saying learn in 5 min or 5 days or some rubbish like that. Also how many times do we see that dreaded word "Hack" being used..... Learning properly takes TIME.

Wonderful video. JOANN IN OPEN TUNING (c)2006 and GOODBYE (C)2006 we're both recorded in open D tuning.
Stumbled on this yesterday. Man, you are the teacher I wished I found years ago. Very good. My wife gives your style the thumbs up as well :)
Cool and calm never rushed through. What a gift for teaching you have

Hi Joe - nice lesson thanks. Good voice too! Open d has got me away from a rut of doing the same old thing in standard tuning.
Very nice open D primer Joe! I have played in open D over the years but not recently so it was a good refresher for me......

Very nice, can u do a lesson as to set properly a guitar for the slide. Thank s❤
Nice video. I am struggling. I used to play almost exclusively finger picking. I had a mini stroke, thank God it was not a full on stroke, and I don't have good control of the right hand. But I'm not giving up and using a 12 string Martin to increase strength and I love the sound.

Thanks for posting Ted The 12 string has a great sound well done to you for persevering and sticking with it. I wish you great success and I’m sure that you will get much enjoyment during your recovery. Just in case you’re interested, I have lots of fingernail content over on my Patreon page with all ranges covered from very basic up to advanced www.patreon.com/joesguitarlessons all the very best.
“for wannabe fingerpickers”. Perfect-that’s me! 😅
Turns out I see the links work fine on my laptop but not on my phone - weird - anyway, love your approach - keep up the good works.
!! 1/2 way thru trying to Tune my individual Strings to his, realize he Tunes bottom to Top! (of course, official String Order but for Dyslexics, challenging!) but I do appreciate I had some reference point to Tune my Strings with.
Thanks so much

is the the tuning used by Stephen Stills of "Wasted on the Way"?
great lesson am I right thinking if yo capo at the 2nd fret you change it to open E tuning and can use the same chord shapes, just like you would use the capo in standard tuning?
@JoeMurphysGuitarlessons

Correct Andrew 👍
Is this tuning also true to none blues songs? Do they have same chords to standard tuning?
Great stuff. Which Martin model are you playing ?

What I noticed as a newbie is that Open E open G open D have similar Chords. I mean if you think about it you just have the same shapes, Across the fret board I should say.
Tab will show that xtra fretted note
Could I play calypso with this tuning?
Great video! Did Robert Johnson always play in open D?

No he played in different tunings
How are you muting the lowest string when doing the shuffle? Like... It's a chop, so the string isn't supposed to ring out. So... How do you mute it?
