Sleeping in a Poncho that turns into a Tent • Solo Camping with One Tigris Tentsformer

Come join me as I have a play with a poncho that is also a tent.
Boring bit.. no, I was not given this tent, I paid for it myself. No, I was not asked to make this video or paid to make it, I do not do paid promotions or work for gear companies, etc etc.
Sorry about any audio issues! Still learning - as soon as I fix one problem, I create another haha

What do you guys think.. gimmicky nonsense, or useful multi-purpose bit of kit? I don't think poncho shelters are overly practical but I think this would be great as an emergency hiking shelter. I've got a couple of bad weather camps coming next on the editing pile, and hoping to get out on a lil adventure soon :D Happy New Year Wild Ones! ✨✨ May your adventures be great and your skies be sparkly ✨✨

It's neither fish nor foul. On day walks I carry a cheap poncho I picked up from Flying Tiger that opens out into flat sheet. It has a grommet in each corner so can be pitched as a tarp which I do to shelter from the rain when eating my lunch. Costs a fraction of the of your one and packed away a lot smaller. The material won't stand up to a strong wind but ok for occasional use.

Happy new year, C. 🎉 Hope you & George had a superb festive season. 🙏 Well, gimmicky or not, good question. Personally, I find them very useful as they fit more with the bushcraft side of me these days. Hence Santa brought me the Helikon tex Swagman roll (check it out it's fab if you haven't already) and matching American GI Poncho that toggles on to it. Along with the HT Bergen 18L pack too😃. I still prefer a bivvy and tarp though. It's a difficult one isn't it, as our HT superlite tarp comes in at just 448grms Vs this 640grms I think you said. Add a sea to summit mozzi pyramid at 200 grms with tarp 🤷 and your still under. Or your DD superlite tarp. Horses for courses I guess, for different experiences and environments. But one thing I have found over the years, as you know I'm a complete gear slut 😂 is that each year due to progressive knowledge I carry less and less and am becoming quite the minimalist, even though my purchasing isn't lol. If it were to be an emergency shelter, again, Life Systems do a great emergency shelter and is only 180 grms too from memory, bright orange though, but weighs much less and lives in the bottom of my pack on every day hike. A question I asked myself recently was, if i was to choose one gear set up for life, or bug out circumstance, what would it be? I've reduced it to 3 set ups at the moment 😂 and I'm trying hard to refine. The problem with so much gear is too many options, sleep systems, cook systems, packs. Recently I got the snugpak jungle blanket 660 grms, and jungle sleeping bag 900grms with built in mozi net too. Highly recomendable for your summer excursions and the pack size are very very small. You'd love it. Anti-bacterial fabrics, thin, but shockingly warm sleeping bag. I'd love to learn what your definitive set up would be too? Bet you'd struggle as much as I with it, C. 😂 As one sized doesn't fit all environments, terrains, seasons or circumstances does it. Oh, I got the Wisport SilverFox 2 40L pack too in Coyote, that's serious quality 👌another superb Polish brand. Great video though, good to see you well. One Tigris do some quality gear too. Regards Benjamin (Marbella)✌️ Ps. Your begining laughter 😂 I so know you were thinking: what am I doing, I look like Quasimodo 😂 but chill, he never had that stylish jiggle of yours 😂

The Six Moon Designs Gatewood Cape is a better and lighter shelter with all round protection from the weather. More expensive but, in my view, well worth it and you can buy a mesh inner for it. The inner has a zip at the back so the rear space can be accessed from within. I love mine although I use a separate waterproof. I had difficulty using it as a cape for the same reason you did.

Happy new year, and thanks for the video. I have used for years the GateWood Cape from Six Moon designs, which is a poncho you can setup as fully enclosed tent. You can use the inner named Serenity Net Tent from the company, or the one coming with Lanshan 1. Was very happy with this gear when storm was coming, or when wind was too cold. Like in a nest :)

+1 on the Gatewood Cape. That's been my primary ground shelter for 17 years or so. I have the Serenity net inner, but mostly use a light bivy underneath to maximize interior room. It's huge as raingear, but the sides can be folded/snapped up to make it more manageable. I carry a wind jacket that can handle rain for a few minutes when the cape is in shelter mode.

I'd recommend the SMD Gatewood Cape over this knockoff any day. Brilliant innovation for the ultralighter rather than being a knockoff that takes money away from the inventor. Besides, the Gatewood Cape has 360 deg coverage and the serenity net tent (sold separately) fits perfectly in it as well as the SMD Deschutes Tarp (and in many other tarps also). The only thing difficult about the Gatewood cape is it is silicone coated on both sides of the fabric so it wants to slide off you when you're putting it on as a poncho. I fell over backwards wearing it over my pack once and I felt like a turtle on it's back. It took me 20 minutes to get up!! Haha!

Using a dry bag just big enough, slip the hot water bottle in with a cozy on, should it bust (fingers crossed it won't) you don't get scalded or wet. I tried it and it works. You do have a tarp you could use for the vestibule! Have a great new year Claire.

It looks like a great piece of kit in addition to a normal tarp, or as a backup. With an additional tarp, you would set up the tarp first to shelter your whole area, then you would pitch this under it, off to the side. It would also help with staying dry.

Happy new year Claire, yes I agree it’s more of a survival tent to be kept in the car, did notice that you picked your gas light and turned it on it’s side to read the bottle instructions, with the long flame it will have touched the glass, I think you were lucky it didn’t shatter, be carful. I filled my chefs blowtorch near the hob yesterday won’t bloody do that again, now sporting a new 1 eye brow look. Nice wet looking blog though 👍🇬🇧

Claire I know you probably get bored with answering this question , but on your journeys across the UK , have you ever found somewhere and thought “ when the zombie apocalypse happens , this is where I’m coming to bug out as nobody would find me “ ? I’m not asking where , but just wondered if you’ve ever found such a place ? TIA 😁
