Car Camping! 🚗 My First Time Sleeping in my Land Rover Freelander Conversion

Sleeping in my car was so much fun! This was my first time car camping in my newly converted Land Rover Freelander :D A gorgeous experience - felt like proper luxury! And all done for £205 (the wood used was off-cuts that Ash had going spare, so if you can’t get hold of any odd bits of wood it’ll cost a bit more). You could of course just use your normal sleeping mat and sleeping bag instead of upholstery foam and bedding, which wouldn’t be as cosy but would save a fair bit of money. I’d put something under it though in case of splinters from the platform and to stop you sliding about.
The autumn scenery was just beautiful in one of my favourite secluded parking spots on a quite mountain valley road 🍁🍂
I am so excited to do more of this, especially a nice winter snowy one! 🤞😍
There was an issue with the windscreen cover that I forgot to mention in the video; having the side flaps shut into the front doors was letting a bit of water in, so I took them out of the doors - this meant that the wind took it though and it was on the floor by the morning. I might not use this again in heavy rain, just use it for dry nights or light showers.
The size of the wood platform is 98cm wide, 59cm deep, 22cm high.
Other channels mentioned in this video:
@AshOutdoorsUK - thank you for making an awesome wood platform for my boot-space! :D
@ksgonewild - Karen shares her videos of wild camping, bushcraft and hiking around the Dartmoor area on her channel and has just smashed 1k subs, very well deserved! :D
Apologies for the low-quality drone footage in this, I lost my new drone on the mountain trip the day after this video was filmed, so I lost the high-res footage 😭 I was absolutely heartbroken but hopefully you can get the jist of how pretty it was.
Thank you so much for watching & see you again soon for the crazy weather Glyders trip 😊 Much love, Claire 🌿🐻

As a car camper myself I'd advise you get an internal front window cover because if you get some nut case around you, you wouldn't be able to drive off without getting out to remove that cover first, and if you are camping on your own that could be a very scary thing. Stay safe and have fun :)

Funny enough when me and the missus went in the car to north Wales we had someone pull up and started beeping there horn and flashing their lights at about 2am my missus craped her self even though I was there...its the only place its ever happened though thank god.

I've got semi-custom, foamboard, folding visors for my car windshields. They don't block out every single bit of light, but they would be fine for visual privacy, and they can be deployed or withdrawn 100% from inside.

Sometimes you can get trouble from locals, especially if it's an area that's popular with the vanlife movement so that they get people coming and going all the time. The trouble is, not everyone is respectful of the places they go. Many people cause issues including noise, scorched Earth and the remains of fire, left behind rubbish, etc. I'm not sure if it's the majority who are guilty of that, but it certainly seems to me that a substantial proportion of them are. And, as such, the locals can become fed up and completely intolerant of _anyone_ parking up, even if we mean no harm and intend on leaving no trace.

Great Video. Can I suggest a couple of safety/crime tips for you, as campers/stealth campers are being targeted at the moment, due to their increasing popularity.... 1) When parking up, leave enough room behind your vehicle to enable you to reverse a bit...just in case someone parks directly in front of you to try and block you in. 2) If you are covering your windscreen, try to have a cover inside instead of outside. This is so you don't have to open/get out of your vehicle in case you need to drive away quickly....see number 1. 3) Arrange the inside of your vehicle so that you can access your drivers seat whilst inside and your drivers position is kept clear and ready to be used...see number 1 and 2. 4) Look at your parking spot, lots of rubbish and beer cans suggest a local meeting spot. Smashed window glass on the floor says cars are broken into here, some areas just don't feel right.

Heyy, great tips thank you :D maybe I should look into a windscreen cover that I can use from the inside. I think I had both the front seats tilted forward, I might try it with the driver side upright next time. Very good point about leaving space behind to reverse into. This is all really helpful thank you :)

Hi WildBeare. Big fan of your videos. I am a full time van dweller. Couple of tips for you. Get some magnets to hold tarp on back of vehicle - strong but not too strong. Adding a little thin pad to help tarp seal to ripples in roof helps too. The right magnets will hold tarp & pad no problem. As suggested already mold, especially on wood, is a problem. My best solution is to seal the wood completely with sealer, primer, or paint. Best solution is to paint it with marine boat bottom paint. Bottom paint has copper in it. No mold/bacteria can live on it. Bottom paint is pricey. Skip drilling holes in it. That just makes it weaker & adds more places for mold to get to. Just seal it well so you can wipe it clean with cleaner periodically, if you don't use marine bottom paint. And lastly add a USB mini fan to drive moisture out & power by power bank to save draining auto battery. Stay beautiful WildBeare. Thx for the adventures.

Claire, one thing that I learned about using a solid wooden platform for this application is once the mattress is placed on top of wood, it typically starts to collect mold.... quickly! A moisture barrier between the mattress and the platform is beneficial. However, I’ve discovered that if you drill multiple 4 to 5mm circular holds into the wooden platform this will provide adequate ventilation, and minimize any moisture buildup issues. An even better solution would be to use wooden slates as your mattress base. I’ve done this too and it proved to be ideal.

  • @hoostra7202

    @hoostra7202

    2 жыл бұрын

@BigDukeX you are right about mold growing fast. The problem won't be just the mattress, even if it's places on a wooden slatted floor. The problem is all the cold surfaces and poor ventilation. Opening a window is not sufficient. We produce a lot of moisture when we breath and this moisture will condensate on colder surfaces. This free water can then be sucked up by all sort of materials that come into contact with it. I would recommend Claire to park the car in a well ventilated garage with the doors open between campings.

Heyy Big Duke, this is a really helpful consideration and I hadn't even thought of it, thank you! Think I'll deffo be drilling some holes in it. It's not going to be used too often, max once a fortnight I would have thought (realistically it'll be less because life gets in the way!), so hopefully driving about with the heat on & windows open the next day will sort it. I'll report back if I get any issues :)

been doing this type camping for around 4 decades now. only i use a pickup with a topper on it. one item i have for the back end is a canvas enclosure with bug screening. this encloses the opening across the backend. all attachment points are to the vehicle. my current topper on a midsize truck means i had to cut padding for the corners as this one has sharp corners. the old truck was a full size with 8ft bed. the mid size has a 6ft bed. so the midsize needs the enclosure every time i setup. i am 6ft tall an want my leg room. on the water getting under the tarp. for you: run the tarp all the way forward to the windshield with a little over hang. then run the tarp all the way off the back to where you want it. for my 6ft truck bed that means about 6'3" over the roof of the topper + another 8 to 9 ft from the back of the topper. width wise i like about 8ft. for air flow i will stake the sides out away from the truck. or i can tie the sides to the truck sides even to the point of going under the chassis.

I sleep in my BMW X5 and explore the wild regions, often off-road. A small hand vacuum (I use a Black & Decker WW100 Glass & Window cleaner) is great at removing internal moisture from windows. I prefer not to have shelves or platform in the car, and instead just chuck two 10mm thick wide self-inflating mats on top of each other, and a sleeping bag. The bed remains permanently inside the car, so no faffing about making beds every night. The passenger seat is electronically pushed forward to allow good head room for me to fully stretch out to comfortably sleep. The windows are black tinted glass for privacy, so I never place any curtains or blackout material inside the windows...because nothing screams more to people that someone is sleeping inside! This allows me to park stealthy, without anyone realising someone is sleeping inside.

I and my dog drove out of Alaska en route to a new duty station in the east. I had a small trailer behind and a cap on the truck. I was doing a partial Do It Yourself move. The original idea was I would pull two camp boxes out of the back of the truck bed making just enough space for the dog and me to sleep. The first day in the middle of nowhere along the Alaska/Canadian border, the tongue of the trailer broke. It wasn't worth the expense or time lost to try and get it repaired. I repacked the back of the truck as tight as I could. Then pulled the plates and VIN plate off the trailer. I ended up abandoning it along with stuff I could live without. I should have kept the old Boy Scout mess kit though, but I packed that truck bed tight. I ended up stretching a bungee cord between the two clothes hooks in the single cab to hold my pillow while driving. At night the dog and I would pull up on a gravel bar on the side of the road. I would place the pillow on top of the cooler on the seat between me and the dog and would just sleep leaning over on that. I usually had to start the truck once or twice in the night to warm up a little, but no more than that. I did something like 7 or 8 days like that. Driving farther and later each day then just sleep leaning over in the cab. At 64, I don't think I would be up for that, but it was an adventure back then. However... My 2021 Ram is a quad cab with a really nice reclining seat. It might be fun to do a road trip just for old times' sake. Maybe not. LOL. Enjoy your spirit. Tough without losing yourself as a young woman. Kind of reminds me of a female Captain I knew in the Army. A real lady, but totally capable without trying to "prove" herself. Both of you made/make great role models.

Hi Claire, we did the same in our old LR 110, what we did with the tarp was make it the length of the roof plus the addition what we needed at the rear, we had brass ring holes 6" apart along all the edges, this was so we could attach the tarp to tent poles ( we use the multiple telescopic ones) and multiple tie down points, 2 poles in the front and so on, what this allows us to do is keep the tarp about 3 - 4" above the roof so when it rains in the night you don't get that feeling of sleeping in a snare drum, near silence.

Super cozy! For the condensation, there's a couple of soulitions for cheap moisture absorbers that might work for that. Bascially just a jar with a filter that sucks the moisture out of the air. Cheap, don't require any power or anything like that. Might be worth lookin into!

There is a small fan made to fit on the top of rear side window it works with, ir without, the rain deflector. One air intake, one exhaust keeps condensation under control as well as cooling in warm weather. Nice setup. Best

I might close the tarp in the back passenger doors instead of tieing to the tyres. If you needed to leave without going outside you wouldn't wreck your tarp (as bad). Great project, enjoy!

Hi Clare,I bought a pop up gazebo from Aldi in the summer that would fit the back of your Freelander perfectly, instead of the tarp,it's freestanding but has peg holes in the feet and comes with guylines too. Look into one of those? Excellent video as always.

Really love your videos -- just discovered them a few days ago and I am popping around watching them in no particular order. Love how confident and cool you are at just setting up a camp and camping -- and thinking through the details/weight/equipment. And love the countryside/landscapes you hike and camp in. For your vehicle conversion I had a few questions -- in the UK can you just pull over and camp anywhere right off the road? There are probably very few places here in the US where one can legally do that. Did your window screens block out enough of the window that anyone trying to peek in could not see anything? I'm going to update my old 2006 Toyota Sienna minivan for van-camping and your ideas actually helped me a lot and should make things easier (and less expensive!) for me -- *THANK YOU*!!!

Ah, nice to know that car camping is 'still a thing'. I remember doing much the same in the 1960's as a child in my parent's Mark 2 Ford Cortina Estate. Of course the true winner was The Austin Maxi! You could probably get a double bed in the back of one of them! The big downfall of many of the older vehicles was that they had no internal door handle for the back door/tailgate. Very embarrassing to have to sort of drop out of one of the rear doors in ones pyjamas in the early morning.......ah happy memories of childhood! ;-)

@@WildBeare Hello Claire. Thanks for your unexpected reply. I don't wish to take up your time or you won't have time to make your lovely videos. I found it fascinating checking out Alexander Stuart Wortley on KZread (travelling around post WW2 England with a hand cart caravan) , and Gordon Staples book (free download from Project Gutenberg) 'Voyages of the Land Yacht Wanderer' (travelling the roads of Victorian England with his parrot, cutlas and revolver). How romantic these nomad's lives were when this fair country was less spoiled. Kindest regards, Peter.

Hello 👋 Wildbeare, greetings from Northern California. You did a great job of converting your Land Rover. Sleeping 😴 in the Land Rover is certainly more convenient than pitching a tent ⛺. It's also safer. You don't have to worry about mountain lions and coyotes like we have here in Northern California. All the best to you. Stay safe and healthy out there. 🤗
