Slavoj Zizek - Lacan's Surplus Enjoyment, With Examples

The idea of surplus pleasure is described in this video in a basic way without Lacanian jargon, followed by examples from Joseph Goebbels, Alfred Hitchcock movies, and other sources, on how the phenomenon of surplus enjoyment manifests in the world.

I have watched so many Žižek lectures that I thought I had already comprehended his project. Since I began reading his works, I realize that his lectures are masterful explanations of his writing but to only watch and not read gives less than half of the understanding (to me; perhaps others are better read on the peripheral subjects he discusses. I’m just a plebeian veteran with a culinary degree trying to fix his brain so wtf do I know)

I can't say I've read too extensively about or from Zizek, but I found a book called Zizek And His Contemporaries gave an interesting story of his experience in politics and philosophy which coloured his thinking. The more abstract stuff like the Lacanian and Hegelian facets of his thought would have to come from books like The Sublime Object of Ideology (for the former influence) and The Most Sublime Hysteric (for the latter influence). But it is hard to choose from his range of +50 books.

Insofar as (he himself would say) he’s written the same book over and over for 30+ years, you’re probably good with getting The Sublime Object of Ideology. That said, you’ll want to have a reasonable understanding of Lacanian psychoanalysis, Adorno/Horkheimer’s take(s) on culture, Althusser’s take on Ideological State Apparatuses etc, Marxian and Hegelian dialectics, and probably just a general understanding of how to read laterally while you’re digesting this work because it’s a goddamn explosion of ideas.

7:10 I get what Zizek means from this but isn’t it also the case that the generation of such a slip would be actually be counterproductive to his “ethical duty” later on in the bed. The slip only brings out his musings and makes him embarrassed about this whole thing, which would actually make him too conscious to perform well sexually. The slip then defeats the purpose and therefore its reason to be there (quoted by Zizek) actually does not make a lot of sense.
