My partner regularly refuses to watch the last episode of a series she likes. It genuinely makes her anxious the closer it approaches, so she decided to leave the series in a state of unfinished limbo rather than properly bringing the experience of watching it to an end.

I do this same thing, it drives my wife completely insane. The thing is, I truly don’t want to see the final episode. I’m happier leaving the possibilities open, if only in my own mind.

I didn't experience this until I watched Avatar the Last Airbender. I was depressed after it ended, very strange experience. It's like something/someone died.

Interesting. I'm bad at watching series, so I leave it because I forgot about it, not intentionally. But I wanna watch the end. Maybe because I know, I can watch it again and always when I see something good, I will swear to myself, that I will. So for me the series or book or anything never ends.

Absolutely beautiful lecture, Julian! I was somewhat familiar with the concept of surplus enjoyment from some of your previous lectures, and now I feel I have a much better grasp of it. And the end, "try not to live other people's dreams", what a wonderful message! Thanks for doing this, from a long-ish time listener in Romania!

Chopin contrary to the other musicians of his time never played chop stick and other exercises for more than an hour he quickly began to play what his heart dictated :). Similarly to Chopin the suggestion of Flaubert concerning writing was: Write for a short time every day, spend long time thinking about the style though. The repetition for them was unbearable and I find this liberating for me personally :) p.s. I am beyond happy that your channel exist. Your receptivity to the emotional wave length that still is in the background of our daily life, your "work" is a delight. I have an idea in my mind of a story and your videos are giving me the mental fuel to maybe start someday the process of thinking hard on how to write it :)

"Terry's routine visit to the supermarket was always a highlight of his week. He eagerly navigated the aisles, his eyes scanning for his favorite snack: chocolate-covered almonds. For years, these treats had been his go-to indulgence, offering a momentary escape from the stresses of daily life. But today, as he reached for yet another bag, something felt different. As Terry stood in the snack aisle, he couldn't shake a sense of unease. The once-exciting prospect of indulging in his favorite treat now felt monotonous, even draining. Each bite seemed to carry the weight of countless repetitions, leaving him longing for something new, something more fulfilling. Despite his growing dissatisfaction, Terry found himself unable to resist the allure of the familiar. He rationalized his purchase, convincing himself that a familiar pleasure was better than none at all. But as he made his way home, the bag of chocolate-covered almonds felt heavier than ever, burdened with the weight of his unspoken desires. Over time, Terry's obsession with his favorite snack turned toxic. The once-enjoyable ritual of buying chocolate-covered almonds had become a source of suffocating routine, a cycle of repetition that offered diminishing returns. He found himself trapped in a paradoxical pursuit of surplus enjoyment, chasing a fleeting sense of pleasure that always seemed to elude him. In the end, Terry realized that true satisfaction lay not in the endless repetition of familiar pleasures, but in the courage to embrace the unknown. With newfound resolve, he vowed to break free from the shackles of routine and explore life's infinite possibilities, one chocolate-covered almond at a time." A Eye

I am beyond grateful for your content, it is always an intellectual pleasure listening to you. Would you mind talking about Zizek and his stance on Sophocles' Antigone? I newly learnt that Zizek wrote his own version of the play in 2016 and it's quite interesting as his opinion of Antigone changed throughout the years.

@@julianphilosophy Thank you for replying! I'm looking forward to it :) I think it is especially interesting as he, in Brechtian style, wrote 3 different endings for the story (Spoiler: the Chorus rises above and takes on the role of leadership and killing everyone) which to me sounds like radical democracy per se. But as far as I know, Zizek has distanced himself from radical democracy and I'd like to hear your opinion about why he chose this ending and how it links to his stance on the radical democratic project.

Funny to mention the oral drive right as I put out a cigarette haha. Real applications abound

Diminished self could be a part of the ego's surplus existence, maybe chasing the object e petite and providing to that drive is the indifference it has created, to feel special. It's meta-ego layering and hinged to convey a sense of disillusionment. It's like the genjutsu of Naruto, lying above the already existing lies and making the Mirage of 'a self exists'

Hi Julian, I currently have a concussion and listening to these lectures is really helping me stay sane since I can’t watch or read anything. (There’s something cruelly ironic here, because I partially enjoy these lectures because they’re helping me feel less lazy/unproductive while I take the time to heal, which totally goes against what you advocate for at the end of the lecture 😅)
