Singing Warm Up - Tenor - Extended Range

Singing Warm Up - Extended Range
SUBSCRIBE
kzread.info_cente...
I don't do a lot of videos that extend into the farther upper reaches of the individual fachs, but here's one to work on.
The first two exercises are excellent for sustained airflow, continuity of vowel sound and matching of resonance form one vowel to the next.
The third and fourth patterns extend a significant amount. The fourth pattern in particular, with the trill, is excellent for learning to retain engagement through the line. As I mention in the video, once you have that exercises sorted out by using the lip trill, rewind a bit and try it with a vowel of your choosing.
Enjoy!

    This warm up helped so much, because I usually sing in my high range and I had never found a warm up that allowed me to go to rehearsal already loose for high notes. Thank you so much!

    I like how you trick my mind in to singing high notes without anticipating the high notes. It is making my voice feel more free and it removed the tight choking reflex in me once I reach above the 2nd Passaggio.Im loving the thrill exercise as it feels like my throat is opening instead of choking. However my sound color above the G is like that of a Pavarotti or Opera sounding but it sounded lighter instead of fuller and louder... or it somehow lacks power...Its not breathy, but it feels like only half of my throat is working and my sound volume is decreasing. My air release is lesser than when it was below G. The area at the back of my nose or sinuses and the area above my soft palate is like vibrating that I got a little of post nasal drip after vocalizing the thrill above the 2nd passagio.... I haven't felt this before but I guess its my allergy thats causing the post nasal drip but the lip thrill is like a buzz in my pharyngeal area. Is the light buzz normal?

  • @JeffRolka

    @JeffRolka

    7 жыл бұрын

    Awesome! The buzzing is probably normal, and sometimes reported when the pharynx is involved when it hasn't necessarily been in the past. Keep practicing and keep me informed as to how things are going for you. All the best, Jeff

    Hi Master Jeff, I've been practicing this exercise as often as I could every other day. I started noticing the improvement in my volume leveling on the notes above the passagio with the exception on the last 2 notes of the scale. I tend to lose my hold on the last 2 notes of the scale. I can reach it if i push it, but it feels like my vocal chords are not yet aligned or adducting in that area. As I practiced this I noticed my vibrato on the lower notes up to A above the passaggio are getting better and consistent. I was just wondering if there is a different onset technique that you do on the notes above A. My vowels specially O and U tend to hold me back as I slide from notes B to c#/d Regards and more power, Angel

    Thank you so much! I’ve added this to my everyday vocal routine. I’ve been sort of out of commission for a year and a half prior to the beginning of this year and now that I’m actively in musicals and singing again I noticed I lost a lot of range and this had been really bringing my range back!

    Hi Jeff, My passagios are at Eb4 and Ab4 and I can reach G#5 on a good day, but otherwise, I can sing in my head voice upto F5 . Any warmups that can help me go to G#5 with ease? Bcause i'm trying to master Dream On by Aerosmith and Tyler screams at G#5 at one point :P Thanks in advance :)

    Could you give us a video on how to belt? I want to eliminate strain and mix with head voice, but have it be just as powerful.

  • @JeffRolka

    Sure, though what you're saying in your comment, depending on your definition of 'belting' may have conflicts. How have defined 'belting' in the past? There are several schools of thought on this. For my part, I define belting as: entering the call of the voice; prohibiting the cricothyroid muscles from engaging in the phonation process and forcing the thyroarytenoid dominant singing voice higher than it's natural transition point. By that definition, there is no 'mix with head voice' as the cricothyroid dominant singing voice (head voice) is delayed. If what you're wanting is to have more power on higher notes, you are better served by focusing on a smooth transition through the secondo passaggio such that the resonance of your voice is maintained. I demonstrate this in this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y4uZ1tN_fM7Jpc4.html Let me know what you think! Best! Jeff

    Thank you! I am in Alameda, CA. There are a few videos of me performing on KZread, but they're a bit on the old side now. I keep having intentions of doing some new ones but I spend a lot of time making these videos so time kind of goes! Similar situation with writing. Loads of songs written; just am not making the time to use the studio for that purpose. Jeff

    When I was a young singer, my range matched Pavarotti, but now that older, I find my top range is less attainable. Can you tell me if this normal, or will that top range return with practice. I really appreciate you warm ups!

    Do you have a vocal warm up or practice that helps remove interference (the stringy, unpleasant sound in your voice when you want it to be clear and crisp)?

  • @JeffRolka

    @JeffRolka

    6 жыл бұрын

    If you mean mucous or phlegm, really any vocalization can help with that. In fact, vocalizing is the recommended means by which to remove it, rather than clearing your throat or coughing. Staying hydrated will also help. The thing with mucous is that it can be really annoying and disconcerting, but it is usually harmless. You might want to try one of the gentle warm ups to manage frustration and then move on to a more standard full range warm up. Perhaps one of these: kzread.info/head/PL2mQP7sE6PHgeixPDzzJHElQpUDoHwvK6 Best! Jeff Shopping at Amazon? Use this link and a small portion of your purchase will be donated to the channel. Am I supposed to try to sing this high notes all in chest, try mix voice(which I'm working on) or go in head voice/falsetto? I need some instructions here. For example am I supposed to go into head voice after the c5 arpeggios?

  • @JeffRolka

    @JeffRolka

    The goal is to seamlessly transition between the three generally accepted registration events. This means using thyroarytenoid dominant singing voice (chest voice) for the lower sections, successfully navigating the zona di passaggio (mixed voice) as you approach the secondo passaggio (commonly referred to as 'the break') and transitioning into cricothyroid dominant singing voice (head voice.) As you ascend towards C5 the transition to falsetto happens. Please note: falsetto phonation in the appropriate range is not necessarily light and airy. In its proper register it is quite full and voluminous. This video is a practice video, so if you're unfamiliar with these techniques and would like more demonstrations and explanations have a look here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y4uZ1tN_fM7Jpc4.html All the best! Jeff

    OhhSylar O Hi, I'v been doing Master Jeff's program since last year. In my experience, if your a little beginner at this excercise you will feel tension and some shake in your throat. Assuming that your a genuine Tenor and not a Baritone, once you hit C4 you'll notice that some of the vowels are hard to do. Mine is O like Ocean and U like You... Though it varies to some. In C4 to E4 you will feel some tightness but not that tight. If you are singing like belting this to be loud then you are doing it wrong as your resonance are unmatched. Start light in hitting these notes as these notes tend to break when you hit E4 to F4. It may be hard to sing it light specially if you were trained by a Choir conductor to sing louder all the time....hitting the right volume but killing yourself after. (Its a major rule on Tenors.... you'd rather die than admit it's hard. ) Sing it in light Staccato. There is a program that Master Jeff posted in KZread. Where he focused on Singing it in Staccato. Staccato helps you build your transition slowly. Overtime it becomes strong. Once you are strong already the sensation feels like your dropping your throat and then widening your soft palate and the passage becomes narrow but not choking. Hope this helps. Visit also the other Tenor program of Master Jeff Rolka... this program is leaning towards the advance student.

    You don't have to do anything that you don't wish to do. It is all up to you. If your artistic needs, however, require a certain range, then some exercises and registration event technique may be necessary. Best, Jeff

    Is there a way to avoid tensing up and having the larynx raise when doing the highest bit of the first lip trill exercise?

  • @JeffRolka

    @JeffRolka

    5 жыл бұрын

    Anticipate the energy required to sing it before you initiate the tone. If you already have a good practice of keeping the larynx neutral, that can help or ameliorate the problem entirely. Jeff

    @@JeffRolka Hello Jeff, thank you for responding! I feel as if I have gotten a hang of keeping my larynx under control with more proper support and breathing but I have been noticing that when I reach for notes a bit above my present comfort zone such as A4 and B4, it feels as if I'm closing off my throat a bit. Is this also an example tension or is there some other bad practice going on?
