Singing Warm Up - Baritone - Extended Range

Singing Warm Up - Extended Range
SUBSCRIBE
kzread.info_cente...
I don't do a lot of videos that extend into the farther upper reaches of the individual fachs, but here's one to work on.
The first two exercises are excellent for sustained airflow, continuity of vowel sound and matching of resonance form one vowel to the next.
The third and fourth patterns extend a significant amount. The fourth pattern in particular, with the trill, is excellent for learning to retain engagement through the line. As I mention in the video, once you have that exercises sorted out by using the lip trill, rewind a bit and try it with a vowel of your choosing.
Enjoy!

Thanks Jeff, im a Bass-baritone, and i usually struggle with my upper register. But after doing your warmups for a week now, i noticed something weird. I could sing in the upper part of my voice without warming up, pretty cool:) i will continue to use your warmups!

Hi Jeff, another great workout for us baritones. I really appreciate these , just found this one. I'm wondering if this exercise could be done in conjunction with a video you did on keeping the larynix low? I tried this exercise with my knuckle against my throat, makes for challenging workout. Should I be combining these, what do you recommend? Thanks again for the best vocal instruction on youtube.

Jeff, I enjoy doubling your warm-ups, geared for tenors and baritones. I am training to be a baritenor by the definition that he covers both the tenor and baritone ranges and two groups of guys can pull this off. One group are the tenors with a good extension of notes at the low end of their voices and the other group are the baritones with a good extension of notes at the high end.

I was once vocalizing while driving (not recommended! - unsafe!) and caught some motion out of the corner of my eye. It was a warm California afternoon and I had stopped at a stop light. The motion I saw was the car next to mine's window rolling up! Apparently they weren't into the vocalization either! Some of the sounds we make to learn about how our voices work aren't terribly pleasant, but they go into a complete sound that is our expressive voice. Keep up the great work! All the best, Jeff

I do like my baritone voice but I'd really like to work on my vibrato with it. I have a sort of Bob Crosby kinda vibrato but I can't seem to accomplish it with some vowels. I've been taking notes and singing them up and down a scale, not as legato but as single notes. Is that the best way to strengthen vibrato? Some days my vibrato is rally great but only if I sing whilst distracted which is weird lol.

Wonderful thank you for this extended version. Its nice to have so many to use. I was wondering, what does it mean when your jaw gets tight and sore? It doesn't happen when I do the lip roll. Thank you

  • @JeffRolka

    @JeffRolka

    7 жыл бұрын

Too much tension in the TMJ joint and associated musculature. It's good that it's not occurring during the lip trill exercise. Some of that tension can be released if you gently but deliberately open your mouth as you ascend up a scale and allow the aperture to close somewhat as you descend. Learning to move your jaw independently of note production or of inadvertently locking can help a lot in tension reduction. Best, Jeff

Big fan of your videos, especially your baritone warmups! For this extended range video, what do the notes range from lowest to highest? In other words, do we go as low as G2 or as high as A4 in this particular warmup? I don't play piano so it's hard for me to tell just by ear.

Thank you for your kind words and thank you for watching! Great question which I must admit, gives me a thought! My 'extended range' videos only focus on the higher notes! The low end probably goes no longer than g2 as you have suspected. Generally they don't really spend all that much time down there. I will address this in the next generation of these! Thank you for bringing this to my attention! Jeff

@@JeffRolka Thanks for the response! I'm a baritone, but I have a very hard time singing any lower than A2 with any consistency so I don't mind drills like this that focus on the higher notes. Do you happen to know how high this particular warmup goes? For example, when you mean above the segundo passagio for baritones, do you mean above like E4?

I’m a baritone and I could go lower. Just stating a fact. In another comment Jeff stated he didn’t go below G2 here though. And I’ve got a D2.

Nice video! I can't hit anything above a high D (so the last few notes of some of these exercises) unless I squeeze the air in a way that seems unhealthy! Should I try anyway, or just leave these high notes out of practice?

Leave them out or switch to the lip trill for those pitches. Super lip trill would be ideal, as shown in this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/g4CFpbqRnLPcgJM.html Thanks for watching! Jeff

Hi Jeff, thank you for your work. I've been using your baritone warm up for four months now and this is the only one where I feel I made 0 improvement. When I attempt those fast exercises near the end my vowels sound like one continuous sound as opposed to separate notes like when you demonstrate it. I also sound very weak and breathy in the upper register, even though it's not higher pitched than your other videos. What do you think I should do? Focus on your agility videos? Again, thank you for your wonderful content

Take it slow and focus on the videos that emphasize thyroarytenoid dominant singing. Any video that doesn't have 'extended range' or 'full range' in the title would be my suggestion. This video is really advanced, and if you're breathy above the secondo passaggio, it's likely that that transition isn't developed enough for these practices. Keep at it! Jeff

Hey Jeff ! So before I used to do the full range baritone warm up first thing in the morning. Now I've replaced that by this one. Can I do that? Or should I first do the full range warm up and then this one?

It's really about using what works for your voice and the repertoire you're working on. If you sing songs that go into this range, then by all means use it. It isn't an 'either or' kind of situation. I can imagine there will be days when doing the other one first would be helpful and times when it's unnecessary. Best! Jeff

Great question! The one that most conforms to the requirements of the repertoire you're singing in terms of tessitura and style. By style I mean, if you have a lot of staccato notes in your repertoire, then choosing a warm up with lots of staccato practice would be great! They're all here. If they're not, tell me and I'll make it! Best, Jeff

I'd be happy to! If you're interested in lessons, get in touch via www.voicelessonssf.com and we can work it all out. If you mean the various videos here on KZread, my best suggestion is to get involved on Sequencer and get my guidebook (available at www.jeffrolka.com/shop/ ) which will really help you put together sequences and workflows from the nearly 500 videos of mine here on KZread! All the best! Jeff

Good day Jeff! My name is Aman from Almaty (Kazakhstan), I bought 6 lessons for baritone. Before that, I took 3 three basic lesson free. At the moment, little given voltage to the ligaments and now I have a break. Jeff, I want to ask, please, make a systematic sequence of lessons paid and free from interruptions. By myself I feel that effective lessons, but so as not to strain the ligaments, I need lessons in the correct sequence and intervals.
