    I don't know what's worse, the fact that it costs so much to own a car there, or the fact that despite this, people still own evos and I don't..... Grrrr

    I live in Singapore. Basically a car here cost over a S$100k upwards. Not forgetting the fines you'd incur for these "illegal" modification. For the price of a normal sedan/saloon car here, you could get a luxuriou car in the states. Furthermore, its either you use your car for 10 years and have its paper renewed (thats about SGD$70k) or it goes to a scrapyard. Welcome to Singapore!

    Personally i would really love to own a car in singapore. But the prices here for a car is freaking ridiculous. It causes $SGD100K to get a normal toyota altis. Although taking the public transport may seems like a good option, but we aren't given much of a choice, and we have to squeeze with a lot of people during the peak hours. Furthermore, not only is the cost of a car expensive, the standard of living here is freaking high as well. Most people in singapore work their whole life to pay of the loans for their houses. The houses are small with only 3 bed rooms, and it causes a fucking 450kSGD easily in today's market. Do not be fooled thinking that our monthly wages are very high, ITS NOT. After paying for all of these liabilities, we have nothing much left honestly. Jobs are getting harder to find because of foreigners as well, and the competition is getting tougher as a lot of foreigners are coming into Singapore to work as well. We have little to no freedom and as Singapore is very small, there's nothing much to do here if you aren't rich. Speaking from a singaporean point of view, I really hate to live in this country. Although I'm grateful for the education that is given to me here even though it is really stress comparing to the western countries, but everything else outweights it.

  • @rjlee3112

    @rjlee3112

    Calum Kyle Singapore is awesome because the people make it such and there is an abundance of wealth. Implementing ridiculous laws just shows the government lives in the 18th century and does not communicate with the public in an effective way. You can force people to be nice but typically it is acquired though social means not by public lashings for chewing.

    Calum Kyle Chewing gum does not make countries poor. Singapore enjoys the same benefits most city-states do - its a financial hub and it was made rich by being a colony/port for the British. Same as HK. Can you give me one good reason why chewing gum should be illegal?

  • @rjlee3112

    @rjlee3112

    8 жыл бұрын

    Calum Kyle Thats the dumbest reason ever. Its on par with it being illegal to have a giraffe in the front seat of a car during a full moon because cookies get soft if exposed to moisture. The logical solution to littering is not providing bins and educating people but banning gum? btw, how do you shower? Naked I presume? You know thats illegal, right? Being naked in your own house/apartment is considered pornographic content and can be subject to 3 months in jail.

  • @rjlee3112

    @rjlee3112

    Calum Kyle Being naked is illegal if you can be seen. Technically you can be seen anywhere. Thats why the law makes no sense. I dont need to go anywhere. The laws are stupid, thats all there is to it. Period.

    Singapore is like the size of Jakarta, even smaller than Jakarta. No wonder if they keep taxes low everybody will buy and drive a car anywhere and causes traffic jam. For 200K dollars in Indonesia you could buy a stock Nissan GTR. Not much, but Indonesia sits at number 3 of the top 10 most expensive places in the world to buy a car, just behind Malaysia at number 2 and Singapore at number one. Imagine, a Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ costs 62k here.

Here is some things you don't really get.Sure things are more expensive and the laws being to harsh come on for a safer and more peaceful lifestyle sure why not?Try going home in Malaysia or Indonesia at night when you are alone?what's the chances of getting robbed?a hell lot higher than Singapore i'll bet ya.our government isn't soo corrupted like our neighbours.

    What we don't know is what is the average wage. The rules do suck ass. But if a civic is 150k there, The average person might make a 100k a year. So the equivalent dollar to car ration in the US might be close to the same. Don't know since I haven't looked at the salaries and exchange rate in singapore

    mzondi1970 Cars in Singapore are very expensive regardless of the higher average income of the population. Cars have a 150% tax on them and usually families of five are lucky to have one "cheap" car. This tax is put in place to reduce congestion in the city. Gas is also very expensive...not to include insurance costs and parking. The city-state has a very high cost of living.

    Having family that lives in Singapore I can tell you, the average person does not make 100K a year. Actually, a lot work in the business of retail where there is no wage, everything is based off commission. You don't sell anything? You don't get paid. Those that do work with a minimum wage may make 40K Singapore dollars a year, which is about 20-25K US. You talk about a civic that costs 150K Singapore dollars, and you're looking at about 4 years worth of salary BEFORE you factor in food, clothes, living, etc. Granted, there are those that do make way above 100K a year, but still it's not as much as people think, couple hundred thousand at most

    It's a lovely place, however their rules on cars are crazy strict. Their public transport is great, and that's what their government wants people to use to get around, but of course we don't want to take the bus. It's crazy expensive, but enthusiasts find a way

  • @mesothorium

    MuzzaHukka If only it was that simple . . .Rules in Belgium have gradually stepped up from Ok-isch to downright idiotic. The law states that ANY engine modification is prohibited. You can however still do all of it. But then the Euro drops. . . The car needs to be reinstated, it needs a new homologation form, your taxes will change dramatically, your insurance changes. . . It is a complete nightmare. Still that is why most people change things inside of the engine, without the inspection seeing them. So bigger bore, Camshafts, Pistons, etc. . . But turbo mods? Oh no you must be mad :D

  • @MuzzaHukka

    @MuzzaHukka

    mesothorium Uh this is what you do. Order a big block Chevy to England, bring your car over here, with your EU Certificate of Conformity. Pay £75 for a road worthiness test (MOT) and declare a SORN (you don't pay road tax) to register your car here. Then, you replace the engine and take a picture of it and get a certified mechanic (the same one who just did your MOT, only required if your car is over 3 years) to sign the picture to say that the engine was in fact swapped and you send it off to the DVLA (Driving and Vehicle Licensing Agency). You will get a new registration document. Then, on a trailer, you transport the car back to Belgium, and re-register it as an import. Make sure the original records are gone from the system (de-register it), and go for a test (again, only needed if your car is over 3 years old). American=engined imports pass inspections all the time.

  • @mesothorium

    @mesothorium

    MuzzaHukka Yes i am aware of that fact, however that only affects engine swaps or imports as a whole. I know of that trick. That still leaves the issue of engine modification on existing blocks. Take my M16A ZC32S block (Swift sport MK2) I do not see myself swapping a V8 in it. All i wanted to do was a piston/camshaft and turbo mod, maybe later looking for flywheels and crankshaft. I can bore to a 2.0l from a 1.6 and do the whole swap inside without anyone being able to tell from first sight. Is much more expensive then going for a light turbo mod. But i do not know if you can reg your car in England do the mods, ie turbo, etc. reinstate it there and then bring it back home. Since our tax and insurance system derives heavily from KW and emissions. Would still cost you more then triple then it was originally.

    mesothorium You probably can, legislation in the UK is much more lenient than over here in Belgium... you can't do jack shit to a car legally if it's not an approved aftermarket part. And you can't do any mods that will change the power of the car (even if you go to a 2L engine, while the car inspection/contrôle technique/auto keuring won't see it, if you ever have a big crash with your car, the insurance company will check everything and if the car was modified without warning them beforehand, they will use that so that they don't have to pay for reparation, and if you end up killing someone it'll ruin your life forever because you'll have a crippling financial debt). The only thing you can do is mod a car with approved aftermarket parts, then run it on a dyno, reinsure it and warn the car inspection that you have done these mods, and also pay taxes accordingly. It's ridiculous. I plan to move out as soon as I graduate.

    Basically what you said. It's a tiny island, they want to avoid millions of shitty cars jamming up the streets like you see in places like India and China. The 10 year COE encourages people to destroy their old cars instead of selling them and keeping them on the roads, and the huge costs prevent everyone from getting cars.

RIP to all cool older cars that where scraped by Singapore's asshole government, though I understand the reasoning for license limitation, but completely destroying a perfectly good car is just too far.

    +Eaglescout217 Well it's sad to say that happens here also... Tons of unique cars are scrapped or crushed here because of legal reasons. A very good example would be the R34 Nissan Skyline, if you import a skyline into the US and get caught, the car will be taken to get scrapped or crushed immediately. Same thing with a Land Rover Defender... The only exception is when these cars become 25+ years old, then they can be legally imported.
