Your persistence is admirable. When that rust appeared after the first primer coat, all I could think was "if it were me, I'd grab a hammer, beat the hell out of that door, and head straight for Home Depot." You certainly know your equipment. You did a beautiful job.

I just painted my door today and now I see this. I have a debt that’s going to haunt me for years now 😆. At least I know how to fix it next time.

Goodness gracious....you are a beast.....all that work to make the door like new when you could have just bought a new door at HD for $150

That door sweep is pure nylon they get memory after awhile. They're super cheap and don't last long. I work with ext. Doors all day long. I'm constantly hammering those sweeps in.

Great job I have to do are door I painted the house with some help and it was hot so did not do the Doors. That's next with making the entrance look great thank you this is my first metal door and I was thinking about rust with it. Take care.

I wouldn't use extreme bond primer, use a regular gray auto primer in a spray can. Extreme bond is still an acrylic a no no on metal.

I bought some spray pain in cans and hopefully I can tape it off so that I won't have to remove the door. will sand it but will not use primer. don't think I need it with the spray can paints. will see what happens. nice job.

You can brush it and if you use the M1 that I used in this video it should level out the brush marks. You could also rent a sprayer from lowes, home depot or any rental store for probably $50. Glad you liked the video. Thanks for watching.

great video, nice job! would it have been possible to spray the paint with the HVLP instead of the airless? I'm wondering if it's worth it to get an airless in addition to a HVLP, since the airless units appear to waist the excess remaining paint in the tube when cleaning up.

Yes I could have done it with my HVLP and your right it definitely waste less paint. I have a video on how I clean my airless and do all I can to recover all the paint back. But in the end it still does waste more paint than HVLP. The airless is more for bigger jobs. Thanks for watching and glad you liked it.

You mentioned ‘ Safety feature so that they won’t break into your house .’ How can someone break into your house from inside ?’ ( the piba in the hinges are on the inside .)

When you sanded all the paint off did you use the manual sand paper? Or did you use the power sander?

I used the orbital sander to remove the paint down to metal, used wire wheel on drill for the contours. When doing the primer sanding did it by hand. Thanks for watching.

thank you and glad you liked it. If your front door opens to the outside and not into a hallway you could sand it in place. To paint with a sprayer you could use a 3m masker with plastic and mask off your entry and make it a spray booth so all overspray stays contained. If don't want to do that then could just spray it closed. Thanks for watching.

Hey Mr. Oakley, I painted my Metal Front Door which is a very hard to get certain type paint. But I didn’t sand the door first I just kind of washed it. The guy at Sherman Williams said that I didn’t need to sand it first, just paint over it he said. Well I think he was wrong. I mean I painted the door. But it doesn’t look super smooth. Do I have to repaint it again But sand it first?

If you don't like the finish then yes I would sand the door. I would actually sand off the new paint down to the old color. Then primer the door, sand the primer with 220 and then paint your new color. Thanks for watching.

Did you paint with a brush? If so you might need to add leveler in it. They could help you at the paint store with it.

What do you think caused the rust after priming?

Was thinking it was because I used water first then alcohol to clean the surface before priming. It seemed to happen mostly around where the bondo was so thought that I didn't let it dry/evaporate enough before priming. Thanks for watching
