This video is a good example of how USDA Ag. Zones are important to note when looking for growing tips on KZread...in my zone secondary vies ARE production vines and have enough time to set fruit. I also cover the node with a little mound of dirt a few times along the vine, especially if the plant has a lot of pumpkins. It will grow roots and help stabilize the plant, and increase root mass allowing the plant to pull up more nutrients!

Hey I thought I would copy what you did and put my pumpkin on a pallet. The poor little thing fell between the slats and I had a time prying off a slat to get it back on top. Next time I’ll wait for them to be larger before putting them on the pallet. 🤨. Thought you could use a good laugh! Love your videos and have learned so much from you.

Good tips. I have time in my area to root the suckers by piling soil over them (c. moschata works best I've read). Once they root, snip from parent plant. But your single vine method may help me much this year with some of the pumpkins I have in and want to keep the vines tidy and semi-constrained. Thanks for your channel, always learning good things here.

This was very useful as I planted my pumpkin a bit late, I’ll use this method to get a few good fruit. Pumpkin leaves are also edible. They are eaten in many African cultures. When I told my mum I was planting a pumpkin, she was so happy and said “just save the leaves for me please”.

I just watched this for the first time. And avid gardener or fruit, vegetables, and flower it really keeps me hopping. I planted a pumpkin patch for the third time in 15 years and this years looks the best. However, I did not get to the single vine training prior to now and now there is a big canopy. The next few days are in the mid-90's and being in full sun is not my idea of gardening outside right now. Your thoughts are appreicated.

We just bought a house with a nicely scaped backyard and a bunch of fruit vines. I've always wanted to grow my own pumpkin. So, i built a mound, and threw a few seeds in, and I'm just going for it. These vines look pretty intimidating. I can't wait to see if they actually grow.

I'd also say don't grow the more common American varieties here , I did one last year and it's vine took over the more interesting ones and made about 7 pumpkins but they were fibrous and not great flavour AND they got and then spread powdery.mildew or some similar disease , all 12 other types I had were free of disease until the American "sugar" style plant spread out. This year I have lots of "Buttercup" ( not Nut!) And then a mixture of euro and Japanese types , I think Mennonite Cushaw is my only American breed

Heya Luke, thanks for sharing all of your knowledge and experience with the rest of us. I have a question about those pumpkin leaves there that seem to have the white powder on them. I just tore out my entire crop because it has ALL turned white like that. Can you tell me if that is powdery mildew (as I suspected) or if it is something 'normal' and safe that I should not have reacted to? First year of growing cucurbits beyond just traditional cukes. Any help is appreciated.

Here in Midwest Texas with our dry arid and scorching sun I’ve learned burying the main vine under an inch of compost and letting secondary vines grow on top of the soil and only cut tertiary vines. And once the flowers form switch to potash and vine meal fertilizer. Once you have the target fruits cut the ends of the vines, the flowers and any leaves that are struggling. The end result is massive jack o lanterns, oh and irrigation line about half an inch under the soil and water every day .

And also to use a shade cloth over the target fruit. When plants say “full sun” here that means 6-8 hours of sun unless it’s a succulent.

You can grow anything in the container, but it need so much more attention, you always need to keep the soil moist, you need to feed the plants. So much hard work compare you just throw seeds in your garden and it grow like weeds without need much attention beside pruning.

I would not recommend cutting the extra vines away. Get rid of the new pumpkins that the plant tries to grow, but more leaves = more solar panels = more energy = more sugars produced = more growth 👍

Cutting the side vines so close to the node could kill off the main leaf at that node or worse. you should do it a couple inches away from the node and by smashing the side shoot off with your thumb like you did causes much more trauma to the plants tissue than by using a sharp blade to make a clean cut which is what I’d recommend. Imagine that you’re having a limb amputated what would be the best way to do it? With a very sharp blade or to get it smashed off with a blunt object? Obviously the correct answers with a sharp blade

Meta Tron, excellent advice. Question though; wouldn’t it be best to just snip off the new fruit and let the new vine grow? My theory on that is more leaves make for a bigger pumpkin on main shoot? If one is worried the new shoots will rob energy from the plant they could just snip the end of the new growing shoot after it has developed some full size leaves? I’m new so this is just a hypothesis. Please correct me if I’m wrong. Thank you

I believe you are both right. In my experience, and possibly yours too, some pumpkins seem more sensitive than the other so you may be okay most of the time but Meta is right but I personally think you always risk exposing the plant to something it does not like when cutting or tearing. Yes, use a blade, but I think you were just caught in the middle of the video, wanted to show us and just didn't have the blade handy because I heard you acknowledge cutting it. All that being said, these are tough plants and very resilient. I usually plant more than one, just in case but it's rare that I lose one and I experiment a lot. Leaves are the plants batteries. You can see in your own video how the plant is sucking the energy out of those leaves close to the root, your theory is good, I think if you use a blade and make sure the main vine stays in tact, you will be ok. You can put a band aid on it to increase the odds of successful amputation. Thank you for sharing this. I have always cut my vines. This year I am doing the exact opposite of what I usually do. I am growing out of a hole instead of a mound. Watering from the edges bringing fresh soil in, like an alluvial fan. I thought, if it worked, it wouldn't be too healthy. So I decided, I will just set it and forget it. Currently I am -Not training vines but I live with two old ladies, who on occasion eat some of the flowers and move the vines. My intention was to let it run and learn about the pit falls of natural growth pattern from experience after years of doing it the traditional way. I've been following that advice my whole life and though, why not just see what happens. -Rather than plant the pumpkins I just tossed two pumpkins in the air and let them come down and break open naturally dumping seeds around it. I thought of this after growing Opo Squash and learning how they reproduce. (climb as high as they can, grow a giant fruit, vine dies and fruit falls to the ground and breaks open spilling seeds everywhere) -Rather than use a mound (Im in a warm climate Southern California) I used a hole from an old giant root I had excavated. -I let it be and water from the edges bringing fresh soil in and covering some of the vines which are most likely taking root under the sediment. I should have a video on the subject in the next few weeks. Still capturing and waiting for it to grow some more fruit. Nice video.

Aren't they pretty much pure novelty and not really worth eating unless you make soup or muffins with spices to make up for lack of flavour? Unless you mean using a tasty variety and pruning it so that it does have heaps of leaves but is concentrating energy to one pumpkin, vine burying and compost tea would also help lots with this

Why not simply cut off the main vine just after the last pumpkin on the main vine?

I guess if you do his prescribed procedure well enough the leaves that stay on the plant will send energy for helping that Pumpkin growth along, I think it's all about making sure the vine isn't too ambitious with trying new growth

What is he thinking ripping secondaries off you’re only supposed to rip your tertiary vines off but then again this is where commonsense comes in If you don’t know enough to know he’s wrong about that you’ll never do too good with the giant pumpkin growing
