In this Don't You (Forget About Me) guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play this smash hit from Simple Minds in its entirety.
The tuning is standard tuning, E A D G B E.
The guitar parts are pretty simple for this one, so it shouldn't be very difficult for a lower intermediate level player to tackle.
I will cover each section of the song in the order that each of them appears on the original recording. When I used to play this in a top 40 cover band, I would try to recreate the synth chord voicings on the guitar, to make it more closely sound like the track, since it is such a synth driven tune.
However, for this lesson, I have decided to stick with the same chord voicings that Charlie Burchill plays on the original recording. That opening guitar riff is sick!
Have fun learning this great song from Simple Minds! Carl...

The fact that there was so much guitar in 80’s pop songs is why it was the best pop music of ALL TIME. Bless Carl for taking on another classic 80’s song! 🙌

You are great at explaining how to get the right sound and infliction when playing the songs you teach! Best guitar teacher on KZread hands down! By the way, that's saying something considering the number of other great teachers that post videos...but Carl has just the right approach and teaches you not just how to play the songs, but play them accurately! He has something for every level of guitar progression as well! While I'm a complete noob to soloing, I am a lot better at picking and rhythm playing...intermediate or a little better I would say...and his courses are helping me get started soloing while helping my rhythm playing get to the more expert levels I dream of getting to! Thank you Carl!!!

Achieving creative guitar work in keyboard-based pop music is very much an art form. With all the synth driven music of the 80s, it was a great era for this guitar creativity. Andy Taylor in Duran Duran, Midge Ure in Ultravox, Charlie here in Simple Minds, Jamie West-Oram from The Fixx…all very creative players whose guitar parts really helped to propel the music.
