    Steven Schiff, the composer of this song actually showed me how to play this many years ago. He was using more poly chords in the chorus in his original version, but it’s not super apparent on the Simple Minds production. I wish I had written it down...

    Hi David, This is such a good live song!! We play this at some of our gigs - I find it really hard to get the keyboard balance between pads and hits - so I'm really looking forward to trying your patches out next time we rehearse it. You mention the left hand in the verse and there is a keyboard line - the right hand plays a more "stringy" pad sound and first round I play just the E and F# notes alternating, second time, third round I add the left hand softer pad G# (under the E chord) and A (D) which holds though the sequence, and on the 4th and last cycle repeat filling out the pad and going up to C# (A) .. D(D) and repeat. That way it builds to the chorus. .. In the second verse it builds earlier I like your chorus hit sound .. I do activate the sustain pedal for the hits in the chorus though, that way you can hold them whilst playing fuller choral chords. Also I might try modifying the 'wobble' that develops as the notes are held. I think it intensifies and speeds up.. thanks again for the great sounds George

    I don't own a Korg Kronos, rather I own a Casio PX-5S. But, I might have to learn this song to add as a cover to my band's set list and with my limited experience with the song, I think you did a great job at showing how to play the parts and what sounds are being used. So thank you. :)

    This is great, and surely comprehensive. When I setup my Kronos to play this song, I was able to fit pretty much everything into a single combi (spread amongs my 76 keys) using stock programs. Mine doesn't sound nearly as polished as yours, naturally. I like your idea of using the setlist to move between sections of the song. but that also requires more multi-tasking than my little reptile brain can handle at once. I'm a set it and play kinda person.

    Thanks Gary! I try when possible to put things in sensible locations. After my Uptown Funk experiment, I realized that while it can be done, I find for live playing it's not always practical... That said, this is purely my own preference. Not everyone has 88 key boards where there's space to play!

  • @charliebe28

    @charliebe28

    6 жыл бұрын

    Daniel Marinho Drummond: ~ Yeah - , that chord that you mentioned IS a Gmaj with an E bass-note (which technically turns it into a Emin7th). Also, within recent weeks I have been EXTENSIVELY researching how to play this song (on both guitar and keyboards) - , and the chord that the guy in this video is labeling as a "Asus" is actually just a Dmaj. (... which is a similarly-constructed chord, but you can CLEARLY discern this reality on some of the "acoustic version" video-clips that Simple Minds has done of this song). I too originally thought that it would be more complicated than that -, but nope, it's just a "D" chord. This video was actually useful to me for the purpose of demonstrating the correct chord "inversions" that are used. Finally, let me say that one of the amazing things about this tune, is that MOST of it is just some configuration of the simple chord-progression E. D. A, D - over., and over, and over -, in kind-of a "hypnotic" way.
