How to play: Don't You Forget About Me (Simple Minds)
Фильм және анимация
In this video, I describe how to play through the song Don't You Forget About Me (Simple Minds) using the 80's/90's sound pack which can be found at www.audora.ca for the Korg Kronos

Steven Schiff, the composer of this song actually showed me how to play this many years ago. He was using more poly chords in the chorus in his original version, but it’s not super apparent on the Simple Minds production. I wish I had written it down...
All I can say is this bro. You're so freaking good👍. I love it
Thanks Dave great tutorial n very detailed approach👍
Hi David, This is such a good live song!! We play this at some of our gigs - I find it really hard to get the keyboard balance between pads and hits - so I'm really looking forward to trying your patches out next time we rehearse it. You mention the left hand in the verse and there is a keyboard line - the right hand plays a more "stringy" pad sound and first round I play just the E and F# notes alternating, second time, third round I add the left hand softer pad G# (under the E chord) and A (D) which holds though the sequence, and on the 4th and last cycle repeat filling out the pad and going up to C# (A) .. D(D) and repeat. That way it builds to the chorus. .. In the second verse it builds earlier I like your chorus hit sound .. I do activate the sustain pedal for the hits in the chorus though, that way you can hold them whilst playing fuller choral chords. Also I might try modifying the 'wobble' that develops as the notes are held. I think it intensifies and speeds up.. thanks again for the great sounds George
nice breakdown....this is a song that , musically, is really not that difficult, but the key is getting the sounds correct....good job!
Excellent Teacher, and player!!!!
I don't own a Korg Kronos, rather I own a Casio PX-5S. But, I might have to learn this song to add as a cover to my band's set list and with my limited experience with the song, I think you did a great job at showing how to play the parts and what sounds are being used. So thank you. :)
This is great, and surely comprehensive. When I setup my Kronos to play this song, I was able to fit pretty much everything into a single combi (spread amongs my 76 keys) using stock programs. Mine doesn't sound nearly as polished as yours, naturally. I like your idea of using the setlist to move between sections of the song. but that also requires more multi-tasking than my little reptile brain can handle at once. I'm a set it and play kinda person.

Thanks Gary! I try when possible to put things in sensible locations. After my Uptown Funk experiment, I realized that while it can be done, I find for live playing it's not always practical... That said, this is purely my own preference. Not everyone has 88 key boards where there's space to play!
Great instruction, thank you! I am assuming you are using a split keyboard with different sounds, correct?
"I don't know the words but I'm singing it anyway" -> Subscribed! Lol
great tutorial I'm using an Alesis Andromeda for the strings. Had an OB-8 4yrs ago wish I could've kept it. Many 80's songs were played on that synth. Pretty simple song but with the synths and overdubs it really brings out that 80's sound
very helpful tutorial 👍🏽 thank you so much
I’m a noob I don’t know what notes you’re playing 😢 I love this song but can’t get the pad notes right, i can’t see them clearly...
Holá Audora , i have a old keyboard , psr 520 yamaha . What name this effects(or approximate)in my keybord ? Thanks!!!!!
Hello dear David Champagne the Teutorial sounds great you can please the whole song in the setting. ? This song is my favorite song and you do not believe what you would give me a great pleasure. Thanks Keyboard is my hobby and the sound of 1980 - today I can not play unfortunately. Greetings from Germany from the small Saarland.
Awesome!...thank you!
fantastic
Just used this to transcribe onto guitar synth! Thanks.
Grandeeee!!!
Super my friend
Nice job! Well done.
I know this old vid but very helpful. Ibm start with a band this weekend that does this song. I was only using a saw synth. Had no idea all this was going on 😂. Back to the drawing board. I am using a CK88. Thx
Very good!!!!
Awesome thanks!!!!
U r great man!✌️✌️✨🍻
Excellent patch! Is there a similar sound pack for the Krome?
Really impressive ! It's easier to learn how to play it with your video ! I wish you could do the same tutorial for Hunter and the Hunted :) :)
in the beginning when you play D-E the second time (before the C), play a G chord over the E bass octave.
@charliebe28
6 жыл бұрын
Daniel Marinho Drummond: ~ Yeah - , that chord that you mentioned IS a Gmaj with an E bass-note (which technically turns it into a Emin7th). Also, within recent weeks I have been EXTENSIVELY researching how to play this song (on both guitar and keyboards) - , and the chord that the guy in this video is labeling as a "Asus" is actually just a Dmaj. (... which is a similarly-constructed chord, but you can CLEARLY discern this reality on some of the "acoustic version" video-clips that Simple Minds has done of this song). I too originally thought that it would be more complicated than that -, but nope, it's just a "D" chord. This video was actually useful to me for the purpose of demonstrating the correct chord "inversions" that are used. Finally, let me say that one of the amazing things about this tune, is that MOST of it is just some configuration of the simple chord-progression E. D. A, D - over., and over, and over -, in kind-of a "hypnotic" way.
you are great
Can you provide the pad names on the Kronos, thank you
Tnx bro...ur so cool
How did you get the chorus horn stab patch to have that cool shakey tail of it? Is it just the reverb or is it something with the actual sound and the decay and release ?

It's a neat technique: use an LFO to control the vibrato. Then, assign the LFO depth to an envelope so that it increases over time.

Just curious, what are you using to switch between patches? Is it a foot pedal?

Sounds absolutely fantastic Dave. Im a drummer who is desperately trying to get the rest of the band into doing tracks to enable us to do such great songs like these in our gigs. So im trying to get a keyboard only backing track.. do you know where i could get a version of the isolated keys part or maybe you have recorded a version of keys only?

what is it called where you're able to split a keyboard like that for different sounds at the same time?

My gear is really straightforward: Korg Kronos 2. In the video I'm using a Kronos 1, but it's been upgraded to the Kronos 2 for sounds and samples. Generally, the Kronos 2 is still a monster powerhouse machine even in 2022. The Korg Nautilus has the same engines but it's missing Karma compared to the Kronos. I hope this helps!
That's perfect. Only one thing. Intro try to play D E. DG CD..
That part is called a turnaround (generically)...
first off thank you. also, how are u changing between patches? do u have a foot pedal or is it just video editing?

I have a standard for pedal (Boss FS5U) that's connected to the switch connector in the Kronos. In global mode, the switch is assigned to "Program Up" which means whenever I click the pedal, the Kronos will go to the next sound in the list. (It doesn't matter if it's program mode, combi mode, setlist mode, song mode, etc)

How are you advancing through the set list? Is it foot operated via a pedal? Or are you doing it via the LCD screen but you've cut that out of the video during editing. Thanks in advance.

Thanks Brodie for the question! I'm global mode, I have the foot switch set to "Program Up" which is the same as incrementing using the + button (so it works in setlist, Combi, program, song mode) and I'm using a boss FS5U switch pedal to step through the sounds. I do this live too!

@@brodiejones2028 Totally agreed! The foot pedal isn't perfect - occasionally I might skip ahead two sounds instead of one so I have to manually jump back a sound. I'm looking for a foot pedal that has a distinct 'click' that only triggers once per step so that doesn't happen but I haven't been looking super hard either. I know they do exist.

FREDY JEREZ The point wasn't to make it with a VST though. It was to make it and all the other sounds into a performance with a workstation. Of course the most accurate method is always going to be to program the original instruments like the album. That's not what the objective was here.
