The band hails from Jacksonville Florida. Im from there. My uncle was a musician and was very well acquainted with the Van Zants, Rossingtons and Collinses. He was devastated when the plane crashed and killed Ronnie.
My mother has been gone for just over 3 years and when I hear this song I feel my mom!
The Ballad of Curtis Loew and Four Walls of Raiford. Both are brilliant tunes.
The crash happened in October of 1977 after doing a concert here where I live in Greenville, South Carolina. 6 of the 26 people were killed, including the lead singer, Ronnie VanZant. His younger brother took over singing for the band after that. 😪 You MUST do "Free Bird" if you haven't already (preferably the live version)!! ** My first time @ your channel - enjoyed it very much!👍

My favorite Lynyrd Skynyrd song ever. Love That Smell as well.
its interesting watching people from other countries listen to this. I know these sentiments are universal but for us who grew up in the South, they are almost scripture
I have played this song for my boys their entire lives and have tried to encourage them to take the words to heart. Shiny cars, big houses and fat wallets don't mean ANYTHING if you're not staying true to yourself and have joy in what you do. Although Lynyrd Skynyrd are the GOAT, check out Shinedown's cover of "Simple Man" they take it to a whole other level.

Actually the threesome of LS , Allmans , and Marshall Tucker is an inspired grouping . You can argue " Best " all day long , and it's ultimately subjective . But those three uniquely illiustrate the Scope of Southern Rock . Allmans include Jazz and improvisational elements . Marshall Tucker Band give deep homage to the Country Roots of Southern Rock . Best song, by the best band! Anything Chris Cornell sang is great
Southern Rock has its own sound. You hear it with these guys, CCR, the Allman Brothers, some others ... and it’s ALL ... HOT!
The sweet sweet sounds of the 3 Guitar Army
Ronnie Van Zant was the lead singer, He and most of the band died in 1977 in a plane crash. His brother joined the remaining band members and took over as lead singer. This band is the quintessential southern rock band. Whenever someone mentions "southern rock" Lynyrd Skynyrd is the first band people think of. Maybe Charlie Daniels band, but this band more than anything. Sweet Home Alabama is THE southern rock anthem.
Lead singer and founder of Lynyrd Skynyrd was Ronnie Van Zant, who died in the plane crash of October 20th 1977, along with one of the three guitarists, Steve Gaines, and Steve's sister Cassie Gaines. There's only one surviving original member, guitarist Gary Rossington.
I'm from North Carolina where any Skynyrd song is considered a state anthem.
This song always makes me think of my mom.....and I always get choked up and teary-eyed.....
The lead singer died in a plane crash about 100 miles from me. He smiled when told they were going down. No seat belt. Others died, too. Ran out of gas. His son took over vocals, but he was the driving force of the band.
Gimmie Three Steps, and the Ballad of Curtis Loew are a few other Skynyrd songs.

One of my favorites is Made in the shade. Never hear it played on the radio but it is a great song.
My favourite song by them
I'm 39 yrs old and have seen these guys twice in concert with my dad. He wants this song played at his funeral.
The band that is out playing today is essentially a tribute band. The original band was in a plane crash in 1977 that killed the lead singer Ronnie Vansant, guitarist Steve Gaines, and Steve's sister, back up singer Cassie Gaines. Over the years other members of the band have passed away or left the band. Now the only original member that is left is Gary Rosington. Very sad. The Band was cut down in their prime. Ronnie Vansant was also the primary song writer.
“I Ain’t the One” and “Poison Whiskey” are some other great Skynyrd tunes.

@@LG123ABC Right. And "Mississippi Kid."
Southern rock at it's finest. Please check out their songs " that smell " and " on the hunt" and "give me back my bullets " and " Tuesday's gone "
"Better to be silent and thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt". For some reason that comes to mind in being a "Simple Man".
My son is 13 and as his mother I have had him listen to this song since he was young. I just want my boy (young man) to be a simple man. Beautiful song.
The name of the band was from the high school gym teacher at their high school who decried their long hair. They developed a friendship with him later on.
the original singer who was also the main songwriter ( ronnie van zant ) died in the plane crash back in 1977. no one wanted to use the plane because it had many problems but ronnie talked them into taking this last trip with it.
Funny you mentioned Tom Petty. This style of music is classic southern rock and it defiantly has a feel to it. Try Allman Brothers, Molly Hatchet or The Marshall Tucker Band for more southern rock.
Freebird by Lynyrd Skynyrd live Oakland Coliseum Stadium!! 1977 It will be the best concert you ever see I guarantee it!!!!!!!
The backstory of this was like Ronnie's (the band founder and front man) grandmother died the same time as Gary's (one of their guitarists) mother and the lyrics were put together by them sharing stories of their deceased loved ones
I have no idea if u guys have seen walk hard the Dewey cox story or not, but after watching u guys I'd say they nailed the part where they're portraying the Beatles bcuz every time I watch u guys u remind me of that scene!
This Song hit deep in the soul.. Mother advice ❤️

song gives me chills, legendary
There is a video of this song with Ronnie Van Zant singing it back in 1976 before he died.

I know you've heard the song but can you react to Free Bird live at Oakland? It'll be great to see you react to all the sunburnt teens making out with each other and see the band jam out on the stage. It's a real good experience
The guitars are tuned down half step to D#(or E flat if you're on the metric system)

Four Walls of Raiford is my favorite, but this one is probably tied for that first place. Their best work never made the radio. From the same town. My dad went to the same school as those guys.

Danced with my mom to this at my wedding. Treasured moment
If you're going to do Skynard reactions, you gotta do the best, most under rated Skynard song. Right or Wrong. Best song nobody knows
Skynyrd guys grew up in Jacksonville, FL... Tom Petty grew up in Gainesville, FL just about an hour away from each other.
These guys are from the southeastern part of the U.S. That guitar sound has a lot of honky tonk influence. Country rock!
I seen them go up on stage at a bar when the regular band took a break. No one realized who the were until they started playing. What a show. Brits with Southern rock, brilliant. Petty may sound a bit like Skynard, not the other way around.
Skynyrd and Petty are from about 65 miles apart....My neck of the woods! ...Many good bands from North East Florida.
Fair play from Daz. Tom Petty is an absolute master, gone from this world too soon, same as Ronnie from Lynyrd Skynyrd. Tom Petty falls into a category people call "Heartland Rock" like Bob Seger, John Mellencamp, and Bruce Springsteen. I REALLY love that genre. It's like country music for Midwesterners basically lol. It's all the "down home" feel of country music but it's not about the South and if you're like me, the twang of country really can get on my nerves
You should react to Shinedown's cover of this song! Very famous rock band, and an amazing homage to the original song.

Listen to Swamp Music by Lynyrd Skynyrd. Most underrated song by far.

There's a very good cover of this song by Shinedown , you should check it out. While this version sounds like a man looking back glad he took his mom's advice, the shinedown version conveys more of a regret of not following his mom's advice. Well that's my interpretation anyway. Both versions are incredible.
