Simple how-to: Change Ford CD4E auto trans fluid (Mondeo, Contour, Escape, Tribute etc)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Easy DIY how to: service the CD4E automatic transmission in your Ford, Mercury, or Mazda by replacing its ATF.
This is my preferred technique for changing the fluid, assuming an external oil cooler is present. Using this procedure a good 8+ liters (quarts) may be flushed out of the gearbox and replaced with new oil. Other methods either replace only a small portion of the total oil, e.g. the 3 or 4 liters from the sump drain, or require multiple and repeat drain/fills which is wasteful of costly new fluid.
Nb: there is no user serviceable oil filter in the CD4E. The filter is buried internally and is only replaced during a rebuild.
You will need:
* Floor jack and axle stands or other way of lifting car
* 8-10 liters/quarts Mercon V ATF
Amazon - US: amzn.to/2xsTaNe | UK: amzn.to/2z8VkP0
* Oil catch tray large enough for all old fluid, ideally with fluid level
* 3/8" square socket driver
* PTFE/Teflon based high temperature thread sealant, to Ford spec WSK-M2G350-A2, common brands from Amazon:
Loctite 592 - US: amzn.to/2da1uoz | UK: amzn.to/2cEldgn
Permatex High Temp - US: amzn.to/2diZ5us | UK: amzn.to/2cvlnU0
* Brake clean or other cleaner/solvent
* Clean funnel with long neck suitable for use with dipstick/filler tube
* Screwdriver or other tools as required to work oil cooler hose clamps
* Rags.

The gearbox featured is a Ford CD4E, labeled LA4A-EL by Mazda, used in a variety of Fords and Mazdas:
* Mazda 626, 1994-2002
* Mazda MX-6
* Ford Probe, 1994-1997
* Ford Contour, 1995-2000

    Thank you for doing this video. I was just thinking about doing such a video because I didn't know if anyone had done a video showing how to change all or almost all of the transmission fluid. I find it to be a REALLY GOOD practice if you want your transmission to last longer. This can be done on any automatic transmission. You just have to make sure you have the return line going back TO the transmission FROM the transmission cooler. Thank you again.

    I thought he did good job of explaining it. I wanted to add - I just did my 2006 Ford Escape V6 and had trouble deciding which line was the return transmission cooler line - I took off the plastic shroud in front of the trans about 6 bolts 10mm and 1 plastic clip near brake lines. just above that shroud is the line I used it has a section of rubber hose clamped to a aluminum pipe it runs under the trans. and up behind it loops above and fits in top back of trans. I hooked short piece of 3/8" copper tube to the rubber hose and aimed it into a 5 gallon bucket. I had already marked quart marks on the plastic bucket using a kitchen measuring cup. Anyway it worked great... I put the car up on ramps and drained 4 qts. from the sump then refilled those 4 quarts before removing the cooler line then started the car and shifted through all the gears D, N R, D, 2 and 1 with the parking brake on and my foot on the brake and checked the bucket added 3 quarts while I watched the bucket fill and stop the engine at 9.7 quarts- refilled up to 9 quarts drove up and down the street then when the car was warm finished filling ( to the bottom of the hash marks on the dip stick. My 2006 ford escape uses 10.25 quarts of Mercron so I got the last 10 quarts Walmart had 17.00 per gallon and 4.50 for each quart. Seems to be running good.

    A better plan is to NOT remove fluid from the sump at all. Remove the rubber hose from the output of the cooler, start the car and let the trans pump itself into a milk jug. Remove two quarts at a time, shut the engine down and add a fresh two quarts through the filler tube. Do this 5 more times. Do NOT run trans through the gears during process or it will mix your fresh fluid with the old.

  • @tukzarauto6227

    informative, spot on except for the oil cooler hose. you should have removed the return hose from the oil cooler to completely flash the old oil in the cooler as well and you should have run an extra liter or so just to make sure that no sign of the old oil remained. just an added information. hope you dont mind.

    Thanks for all the info! Saved me from making the mistake of assuming this was old-school drop the pan/drain and change filter kind of setup- had no idea it had a drain plug, or that the filter wasn't easily replaceable and I'd nearly ordered one. my '99 Mystique has started acting wonky and I really don't know if the fluid (which looks actually pretty good off the dipstick) has ever been replaced. Intend to replace with some fresh Dex/Merc (dipstick calls for plain Mercon) and add in a bottle of Lucas Transmission Fix. Hoping it clears up my problems which are mostly surges and hard shifts especially when the O/D is enabled.

  • @rickd650

    @rickd650

    Жыл бұрын

    Follow up and some observations. My tranny issues cleared up after a few drives with a partial change and replacing one of the quarts with Lucas transmission fix. I wound up using Dex/Merc, after much research and consideration, I decided that with the vintage of my transmission I didn't need Mercon V and Dex/Merc replacement fluid would suffice. My dipstick said Mercon, so Mercon it was. I continued to have a few little shifting problems until a good drive on windy, hilly roads with a lot of manual up/down shifting got everything worked out, and it's been solid since. I did NOT disconnect the lines and do the 'flush': I've never personally had a Ford product that had rubber lines as shown in this video, and I wasn't of a mind to mess with the metal fittings to the radiator/fluid cooler- something I have broken in the past on an old Ford. So I just did the drain plug drain but as in the video, let it sit overnight. Second, not all drain plugs are magnetic! I was very pleased with how clean my drain plug was, until I realised that it wasn't at all magnetised. Go figure.

  • @CraigsDIY

    @CraigsDIY

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Artem Lysenko We are flushing a part of the transmission, not just draining and refilling its sump. Once new fluid is in the sump, we run the engine and use the transmission's oil pump to flush new oil (from the sump) through the components and push the old oil out the cooler hose. If you don't fill the sump after draining it, obviously there is no oil to flush with. This way we can replace more like 2/3 or 3/4 of the total ATF, instead of just 1/3.

Is it worth just draining out what is in sump and replacing it ( about 4 litres). I wouldn’t want to flush it or drain all of it. The box is running well, gears change as they should, just a slight wear noise when in first and 2nd. Reason I ask it there is so many different views about changing transition fluid on high mileage, no service history automatic cars. Great videos by the way.

    Oil change isn't going to fix that so long as the level is not way wrong. You could check minor possibilities like 1) gear shift lever is operating correctly (watch it at the gearbox), and 2) check the speed sensor is functioning properly. Otherwise the whole trans will need a rebuild or a replacement.

    For the ATF, it depends on usage. Minimum (extreme) interval would be 50,000 km but only if the car is being heavily used/abused. Really you should inspect the oil and look for discoloration, burning, or metal specks. If it is red and clean it doesn't need changing.

    As said in the video, the oil filter in these boxes is built inside the unit, not user serviceable, you would only change it if doing a rebuild.

    Is it normal for the drain plug to come out dirty?

  • @CraigsDIY

    @CraigsDIY

    Depends on what you mean by dirty. It is a magnet as shown so it might collect metal debris. A lot would be evidence of bad wear in the transmission. Or sludgy from oil would suggest oil definitely wants changing.

    Ford mk 3 users : not sure the gear box is identical on petrol and diesel for mk3 model. On diesel, the gear box is jf 506 e. Made in Japan and needs 7.9 liters according to specs. Trust me, it wasn't easy to find this info. Not sure, as I was saying, about the being the same type of gear box because the one on diesel doesn't have a dyp stick.

    Thank you for your great video ! I wonder is Dexon III compatible for CD4E? Thnak you ! I am looking for Mobile ATF D/M (pds.mobil.com/USA-English/Lubes/PDS/GLXXENPVLMOMobil_ATF_D_M.aspx) Application: Note: Mobil ATF D/M is not recommended for other applications, including GM DEXRON® VI, Ford MERCON® V , MERCON LV®, MERCON SP® and Type F ATF

    In theory, if it meets Mercon spec, that is the old Ford standard - their new advisory is for Mercon V as explained in the video. Your choice.

    craig i think you should not use a cheap floopy ratchet on a drain plug that is steal on soft metal you can make them strip the threads.. i would use a power bar no flop ..i understand you knowing what your doing but a noob at this might not relize
