Southgate is not Pep and City's defence is better than England's, even when they are all fit

the team is struggling to gel together and the defence is ropey.

between Bayern and City, it took Pep 9 shots at the CL to win it. Tournament football it does take some details and luck to go your way to win it especially when you are not the out and out favourite. For me there’s 4/5 teams that if they bring their maximum could/should win it. And that becomes especially pronounced as a big chunk of this is one game knock out football. Of course this time the expectation is to win it or at the very least go very deep into the tournament with some outstanding performances and not being well beaten at any point. The football needs to go up a gear. Overall and up until this point, Southgate has done a very decent job. I think from some quarters deserves a bit more credit. Played a role in getting us to being considered and expecting to win a tournament. A great unifying figure, I think is tactically better than people perceive certainly from a strategy perspective. There has been some disappointment, a feeling of could and should have been more (most notably Italy final) but undeniably Southgate’s England sides have also served up a lot of joy and some massive moments/results.

Last chance for Southgate to win a trophy? Didn't they spout this during Euro 2020?

@@roryanaughe5217 You don't have to be the best team to win a tourament, just look at Greece in Euro 2004 or Denmark in 1992. Sometimes you just need a good mentaility and a bit of luck, which is the beauty of football. Underdogs always have a chance in knockout football. Also England have had a lot of bad luck in penality shootouts over the years, we were just a couple of penalities away from winning the Euros last time.

There are a handful of international teams, historically and recently, that have that bit extra about them which enables them to get over the line and win major tournaments and have proved it more than once. England are not one of those sides. We fall in the category below with the likes of Portugal, Greece, and Denmark who might win one tournament in a lifetime but never more consistently than that.

If Foden is actually the player of the season then he should be able to walk in to any team, but if he can't even start ahead of Saka, Gordon, Palmer or Jude then he wasn't really the player of the season.

Who booked Gabby ???

It was admittedly a friendly against Iceland, but the fact they managed 1 shot on target when England played what was basically their first team suggests that there’s more to worry about than just the defence.

We can't break teams down who sit back and look weak defensively in an open game. That's why we cannot beat top teams. Southgate has never been able to change that.

What a life these guys have. Being paid, put up in a great hotel, talking about football and being at these massive sporting events. Something we'd all volunteer to do for free as long theres a roof over your head and meals.

Southgate is not a winner, you can see it when he's interviewed. He drains the room of energy and confidence, sorry to say but I don't think an English Manager is the answer as more often than not, they have a very similar mentality. ie, its ok to lose as long as you have a good showing, get the fewest yellows/ red cards and a shot at the golden boot. I’d love England to win the tournament but I don’t think we’ll even win our group. If that happens we’ll likely play Germany in the last 16 and sadly I think that’ll be it. The only.y reason the bookies have made them favourite is because the bookies have more to lose if England win so the odds are shortened

I have never understood the fascination with favourite and i often wonder whether other country do the same when it comes to international tournaments. Anyway's i have never understood why England are often listed as one of the favourites when the only tournament they have won was the WC in 1966. History shows us that teams that often win tournaments are teams that have won it before and secondly within a reasonable time period. Like a lot of things, to get over the hurdle the first time is often the most difficult and England have never won the euros. I personally have Italy, Portugal, Spain all above England to win the Euros. England often base who is favourite on their squad which a lot of the times have been found out to not be as good as people think they are. But whatever the case it is wrong to base who is favourite to win the tournament on squad talent and we have see in the last euros for example. Majority will agree that England had the better squad, but Italy have vastly superior international pedigree and in the end they won the tournament. Who is favourite should be based on past achievements in the tournament and not how talented you think your squad is

England have never reached a final of a Euros or World Cup when the tournament has been held overseas. What makes you think it will be any different this time around? FYI - England haven’t done so since 1950 for the WC and 1968 for the Euros. So, if we don’t win this time around, we will survive. Just don’t have too much expectation of winning one. 1966 really was a one off - where there were only 16 teams playing, 6 matches, where England played all of their games at Wembley and there was no VAR and no penalty shootouts. Had an Azerbaijani linesman not given that goal, then it probably would have gone to a replay. Then who knows what might have happened. Setting them up to fail again.

Most of us are not old enough to witness England winning a tournament. I have accepted that even if I live to 150 years old, I would never see it. I’m a Spurs supporter so I know what I’m talking about. The mentality with the England and Spurs teams over the last number of decades are exactly the same. Not winners!

Kyle Walker was out of position more than he wasn't against Iceland. Maybe that was arrogance about the opposition, but that can't happen again.

We mustn't take the group games for granted. I can see Slovenia and Serbia being very tough to break down. I'm thinking of the 0-0 draws against Costa Rica in 2014, Slovakia in 2016 and Scotland in 2021.

If England are going to win they have to play to their strengths and play attacking football. Best form of defence in football is to play positive attacking football. Keep possession of the ball and use your greatest assets the forward players and Bellingham and Foden and Saka. Southgate must grow and pair and attack. If England play a pedestrian slow game from the back through midfield they’ll go out in the Quarter Finals. Play attacking football and go for it. Only way England will beat France.

To many individuals need to leave club football in England

england would have to win 4 knock out games in a row without going to pens .. unless there is a freakish scenario where england actually win a shoot out .

With the current crop of players, England can win the Euros. England can win the Euro 2028 with or without Southgate.

I listen to english commentators and pundits and they're comparing premiere league scenarios and how a player played well in the premiere league this year and thus should do well in the euro etc. The PL is a local English specific league which is almost a foreign sport when compared to an international tournament like the euros. For me the national English team always suffers from it's own willingness to impose the PL style of play and english mentality on an international tournament. This simply doesn't work. England need to take on an international mindset of the game. You need to drop when you're fouled and win free kicks even if it's not a completely obvious free kick or obstruction. You need to milk that. You won't have english fans booing you if you drop. You have to step on that ball if you're up and win some time. You have to sometimes "park the bus" to keep a result if need be. That's the international game and referees at these tournaments work differently to referees in the PL. You need to make it clear to the referee you won't take nonsense from him/her either. Do what it takes to get the result. And this mindset that England somehow are favourites going in needs to stop. Because when other nations see it they just use it as inspiration to beat Engand. You need to go in humble. Just my two cents as an outsider.

Cant see it happening, Southgate is a nice guy but an awful negative coach and relies to much on individual brilliance to win games rather then tactical play. Its clear the that the best coaches/managers in the world adapt and change things during matches while Southgate is extremelly conservative in every way. Im sure England will do well in the Euros but it will mostly be down to the clear talent that England have in there squad then anything else.
