Silversmithing: from file to polish.

G’day everyone, I hope you’re all well! In this video we’ll be making some rings and pendants. While we start from scratch, I’ll be trying to explain the clean up process from file to polish, even though it starts from the beginning. I hope it helps make a few things make sense, if you have anything to add, share or questions, leave a comment and I’ll try to respond. I hope you enjoy, thanks for your time. 🤪👍

    I really love the ideas for those of us who dont have all the fancy equipment. The nails for texture was a great idea.

    A really fantastic job with a really nice clean professional finish you just don’t realise how much time and effort goes into making beautiful pieces like these well done 🪨👍

    About 10 years ago, I made a silver bezel mount. No stone, just silver, and it was pretty pathetic. Very pathetic. My jewelry making career ended that day. You did a fantastic job with those stones and settings. Very impressive opal jewelry! Thanks for showing us how you do it! dp

    Phil you have delivered some great education here. That is a lot of vid. Good on ya giving us this content that is some effort. I am sure it inspires a few to make their own pieces. I am not one to endeavour making jewellery pieces just yet but you have shown a way and I will have a go with time. Thanks a lot

    Wow, a long form video PACKED with lots of valuable information. Nice, thanks Phil. I really like the way they all turned out. This video did give youtube a LOT of opportunity to show ads. I tried to watch as many as I could all the way through. Even I have limits though.

    Love the texturing the band thing with nails ,that's really cool ,I often look at pre textured Sterling we can buy and a lot of it looks naf ,much better to create your own texture, each piece is unique, and everything hand worked,,great post ,cheers,

    Nice video on how to shape and make Bezels and Rings , but personally I prefer solid gem opals so bezels dont show the sides which is how you can tell its not a doublet or triplet.

    G’day mate, I do like that claw settings allow for more viewing, bezel settings are more the traditional setting for cabs, but the best way to tell if the opal is a solid, doublet or triplet is to buy from a trusted seller. 🤪👍

    G’day mate, the soldering is only slightly different, it takes a bit more heat, but you don’t have to heat the whole piece when soldering. The clean up process it the same. 🤪👍

    Why did you omit the soldering technique for the rails on the inlay rings?

  • @theopalmills

    @theopalmills

    G’day mate, there’s no trick, it’s just solder as usual, I have other videos that include soldering. I was asked to show more of the filing through to polish, on the clean up. Inlay rings are relatively easy, I’ll see about doing a vid on it from start to finish. 🤪👍
