Making a Tapering Teardrop Pendant: A Silversmithing Tutorial

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This tutorial shows how to make a teardrop shaped pendant featuring a green dyed Agate. This is a simple design that might be a good beginner project. For materials, I used 26 gauge sterling sheet, 10 gauge sterling round wire, and 3/16 inch fine silver bezel strip in 26 gauge. As always, I use hard silver sheet solder and My-T-Flux from Rio Grande.

Hi Chad, I enjoyed this tutorial so decided to make one. I didn't have 10 gauge of course, so I improvised with sterling fork tines. They were just the right length. The bottom where I soldered them together was a little deeper than the wire would have been so I propped the bezel I made so that it would be set flush with the stone. Other than a little solder gap it didn't turn out too bad. Definitely wearable. If I knew how to import a picture of it I would show you.

I don't do instagram. If you could let me know your email or FB contact I'll send you the pictures. I did another one today in hopes of cleaning up the solder gaps. It's OK but not perfect. Jean @@chadssilversmithing

This is really pretty, I really like the round taper. One tip I heard about and now do, is use inexpensive brass wire (or sheet if sheet is needed) to use for in situ measurements. This leaves the precious metal undeformed. Sanding from a rotation tool: brilliant! 🌺 🌺 🌺

Hello Satalia! I'm glad you got your order:) Interesting that you should ask about flush setting. I am currently practicing that technique. I had never tried it until just recently. Once I feel like I have a good handle on it, I will make a video.

Chad, you can also use your rolling mill and step taper your piece then file and it works like a charm. I haven’t done in on smaller material like you have, but I think it would still work fine. Happy New Year to you! Thanks for all that you share.

Very nice thank you it would be nice if you could have showed how you set the bezel did you cut any of the length off or put something inside the bezel for the stone to sit on like sawdust .or ? And you said you used a drill to tidy the top of the bezel it would have been nice to see and the drill bits you used .😊❤

Hello Jakki. I don’t use sawdust as it decomposes pretty quickly, but tagboard (non-corrugated cardboard). It is compressible and doesn’t break down like sawdust. The cleanup is with a blue (fine) silicone polishing wheel. Hope this helps:)
