I have a 2017 Denali with the 6.2 with around 20k miles.....has the EXACT same sound. Sounds like a sticky lifter, but its not a lifter. Most people say its the high pressure fuel pump. Its cool to say not to worry about it, but pulling up next to a building with a 60 thousand dollar truck and hearing what sounds like a loud, bad lifter is kind of bullshit....IMO.

I know the 5.3 Vortex noise is the lifter. They're hydraulic which means they pass oil directly through them and up the center of the lifter rod to funnel oil up to the valve train. The problem with the early 2004+ ones was that the channel in the lifter was too small and crud could build up in them. Then the tap will show itself as the lifter rod just taps the rocker with no lubrication leading to that rhythmic tapping. The solution I saw for it was to spray carb cleaner down the rod and let sit for a day before starting the engine back up. The cleaner will dissolve most of the carbon crud and allow oil to pass through the lifter again and up the rod. Just make sure to get constant 3000 miles oil changes.

You might want to check the valve clearance. Also, the gas may make a different but its not to likely. I have a 2017 LT Z71 and the owners manual said use 91 Octane or higher. I run the Lucas oil Upper Engine and Injector cleaner in all my vehicle, every other tank of gas. I run 89 Octane and the Lucas oil bumps the Octane rating over 91. I had a 2005 Ford Super Duty 6 liter diesel, ran the Lucas oil in that one too. We bullet proofed the engine 5 years ago and took a look at the engine's upper end and injectors. All of the parts were spotless, very clean and never had a tick in the engine. Oil is cheap, we changed the oil every 5,000 miles and never had a single issue. The Ford has 140,000 mile on it, and mechanically, never a hiccup. Regular oil changes are just cheap insurance. Enjoy your videos, liked the oil change one, thanks.

Absolutely it is nothing to worry about, all of these trucks do it and that is okay. It is not a problem, there is nothing wrong with any of them. My 03 with 300k does it & has done it since day 1 & it runs like a clock with absolutely no issues. My dads 06 did it the whole time he owned it from 150 miles - 180k (8+ years) with absolutely no problems at all the whole time. His next truck a 2011 did it too, it definitely wasn’t as loud in the 2011 as the 03 & 06 but the noise was still there & it had no issues for the 7 years & 150k++ he had it. And last but not least the 2018 he just bought brand spanking new at the beginning of last year does it as well. Again not as loud as the earlier models I mentioned and it is even a bit quieter then the 2011, but the sound is still there. It now has about 18k and not a single problem. From what I’ve seen it seems to be getting quieter in the newer generation engines. I’m curious about the 2019’s and if the 2020’s will even make this noise at all. Anyone here have a 2019 5.3? Does your engine make the ticking/tapping noise?

I had a Blazer 4.3 Vortec (the worst). It had a very common problem, blown intake gasket. After the job, it started ticking very loud, known as a collapsed lifter. Apparently loosened debris blocked oil entry into a hydraulic lifter port. I put Wynn's Hydraulic Valve Lifter Treatment in the CC. The ticking got a lot quieter in about 30 seconds. It totally went away after about a half hour and I would barely hear it for a few seconds on cold winter mornings. It is very important to use the specified weight oil. Push rod/rocker engines usually require lower viscosity oil than over head valve engines. The oil needs to be more fluid to pass through the push rods to lube the rockers while over head cam engines don't have this path. You can also add a half quart of transmission fluid to the oil to clean and lube noisy lifters.

My 2006 has 298,000 miles on it. The ticking started about 30k ago, not just at startup but while driving too. It comes and goes, but gets more frequent as mileage racks up. I always use Mobil 1 synthetic and change oil religiously. One thing I noticed, is the ticking noise goes away right after fresh oil change, then shows up occasionally once oil gets to around 70%, and progressively more often as the oil gets older. Then when I change the oil, the ticking goes away…and the cycle starts again. One time I added an oil viscosity additive, and the ticking stopped right away…until it came back eventually. Otherwise truck runs perfect. One other observation, the ticking is more frequent with around town driving, but never seems to come up during long highway road trips.

When I quit using M1 10 years ago the problems disappeared. Just about any other oil will eliminate the sound. I run Penzzoil Ultra and Castrol Edge in everything. No such problems ever since dumping M1.

Run like shit but it’ll run. But like I mentioned before get a cold air intake and a cat back exhaust and you won’t even notice it unless you’re in a drive through lol.

Just a heads up, what I hear is the Fuel Purge Valve. It is located to the right of your throttle body and feeds to your Intake. $30 part. Chevy OEM FPV is notorious for being noisy. If you put your hand on the throttle body and on the FPV , you can "feel" what youre hearing. Almost like a distinct grinding sound/feel. I put some Dynamat extreme on mine when I replaced it. .....and noise is GONE. AFM lifters will be much noisier when they go. Yours has no problems....yet. Up the oil viscosity as recommended by owners manual for your weather conditions. You'd be surprised how heavy you can go and still be under mfg recommendations.

The 5.3 has a plastic filter/strainer under the oil pressure switch for the AFM lifters. Change it out to make the clatter on startup go away. The LS4 seems to have this problem more than the truck motors but all of the AFM motors have this filter.

I have an 08 z71. Has the exact same tick with a cylinder 6 misfire code p0306. Have replaced spark plugs and coil packs. Still same exact code and same exact tick. It’s kinda loud and really doesn’t go away, also the engines starting to run poorly..

NC BassMaster most likely the injector if its not a spark issue and no other cylinder has a misfire. Injectors do make a sort of tick sound, i bought a jeep and had always thought it had lifter issues until i took a screwdriver and held it up to my ear and the injector and could tell it was from the injectors. Try it on your truck if you still have it or if you havent figured it out

My 2016 is doing it now. Took it off-road and got a little heavy on the gas. Only time I've beat on it and I'll never take it in the mud again. Now the lifters definitely have a distinctive tick. What to do? Heavier oil or rebuild with performance parts?

Toss a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil as part of your oil change. You can also put half a cord into the gas tank to clean the upper end of your motor. This has worked for me for years.

I do the same thing also once a year fill with tranny fluid only 5 qts let it idle for 1/2 hr, drain real well and just use Wally world oil change ever 4,000. 150,000 miles on 2008 no noise at all. Also I bought a Dorman valve cover for drivers side, that revised the oil redistribution no oil consumption at all.

2014 and up use high pressure common rail injection. The high pressure fuel pump is what you are hearing

I have a 2014 GMC Sierra 5.3L and there is a service bulletin on the high pressure fuel line and check valve. Helped the sound for a bit but not entirely. I’d love to see someone create some sound proofing / padding to install around the fuel pump or that area to muffle the noise more.

The fuel pump has sound deadening around it its just a loud setup. We have all kinds of people complain about this on all the direct injection engines

Run the AMSOIL 5w-30 signature series. I was skeptical about AMSOIL , after 70k on my 5.3 the tick is gone.

Are you using lower octane gas? I noticed on my 03 Silverado it happened to me when using lower grade octane. I had to switch to high octane fuel.

Often with ancient technology like American GM pushrod engines, they will all produce some sort of lifter / push rod noise at some stage of the engines running.. The key is whether they are getting worse or pretty much staying the same. Also, often it's simply people using the wrong viscosity oil that will make the noise sound worse. There is however a big difference between a definite TICK and a valve train "noise". It it's a definite TICK, you likely have a issue that should be solved, especially it it is still there under acceleration and load. Ive owned an LS1 for two years now and it is real sensitive to even small viscosity changes. As is with mine though, if the noise is essentially gone once it reaches operating temps and only sounds out on starts, warm starts as well as cold then it's probably OK.

Dustin how many miles were on the truck when you made this video? Did it make the noise when new on factory AC Delco Dexos 1 Gen 2 oil?
