Kevin is actually a tenor. He can make bass sounds when he's beatboxing, but that's a special bb technique. When he's not beatboxing he usually fills in the middle of the chords. He was not a singer before he joined the group, but when he and Avi were rooming together when they first moved to LA, Avi gave him some lessons. PTX does songs like this on most of their albums, with no percussion and tight harmonies -- examples are their originals "Run to You" and "Light in the Hallway" and a cover of The Rescues "My Heart With You" on their latest Christmas album "Evergreen"

It's all Avi. Kevin is a tenor. Ben Bram, the group's Arranger, discussed in a pretty great interview with Jacob Restituto the style differences between Avi's and Matt's voices. Avi is a basso profundo and his bass is more booming, he blew out speakers. Matt's lows are more chill. The group had to make some changes to better accommodate Matt's style. Both have beautiful voices but very different styles and tones. Great reaction!!!

I think when Avi sings lead or in a higher register, it's actually Scott who covers the bass. "Hallelujah" was a good example of that.

If you watch their hands closely in “say something”, especially scott, they are supposed to be sitting for an old timey photo and scott is literally white knuckling the back of kirstie’s chair. It’s hilarious once you see it and start looking for it.

Yeah, I think it's physically painful for him to keep his hands still when singing. Even the vids of him playing piano for a while back he struggles to keep both hands on the keys, one keeps lifting off. Idk if I'm remembering right but I have a vague recollection that years ago he mentioned maybe on a Superfruit vid that someone had told him it was annoying or something & how it had bothered him. But it's just such a part of his performance; in the Over the River vid he had these big dramatic actions to do as part of it and I think that kinda helped focus his hands into something specific otherwise they run away with themselves as much as his riffs do.

The story is that they were on tour in Europe, went into this cathedral, loved the acoustics, and did this in one of the side aisles. I sing a lot of Renaissance music and did a workshop once where we visited several of the cathedrals in southern England and sang music composed and sung there in the Renaissance. We would sing in different parts of each cathedral to see what effect the architecture had on the acoustics -- in the choir, the lady chapel, the crypt, processing around the cloisters like the monks used to, etc. For instance, in the choir of one cathedral, the architecture ate up the treble voices, which is one reason they had more than a dozen trebles singing with only a handful of tenors and basses.

They all sing with their hands given half a chance. One of the other commenters mentioned the video for Say Something, where they all had to be as still as possible because they wanted it to look like a painting. Well, except Kevin who had his hands busy with the cello. But Scott is especially expressive with his hands when he sings, and his whole body really. He moves constantly. So if you watch the video for Say Something you can see him standing behind Kirstin and Kevin, clinging to their chairs for dear life so he won't move more than he absolutely has to. I think it contributed something to that expression of real pain that he had while he was singing because it had to hurt with how hard he was hanging on to those chairs.

If you watch more of them singing live, you'll see that sometimes when they're doing faster songs like Daft Punk, Avi (who plays guitar) will be playing air bass with his notes. Matt drums and you can see evidence of that in some of his hand movements, too.

Kevin is a tenor. Scott sings bass when Avi/Matt sings lead. Avi is classically trained basso profundo... That is opera bass with mega volume. The only low stuff Kevin does is throat bass percussion. OTOH. Mitch & Kirstie have crazy ranges with some lows. So every time you talk about Kevin helping Avi out my eyes cross. LOL

Typically Kevin would not be filling in the low end the cord would probably stack up Avi/Matt, Scott, Kevin, Mitch and finally Kirstie. Occasionally Kirstie and Mitch swap parts but generally that’s the stack if they’re all five singing. So if you’re hearing a lower baritone part filling out the bottom that’s probably Scott. In fact Scott will take the base line when Avi is taking the lead.

👋😄 Kevin sings tenor if look closely when Mitch has his solo Kevin is in the background doing a high whistle like tone! Kevin can make bass like noises when he beatboxes. Scott is the one who takes over the bass when Avi or Matt have a singing lead. They ALL have great vocal range. Kevin is a tenor and very high falsettos. Scott is baritone covers bass flawlessly and hit insane falsettos!

Very late to the party here, so no one might even see this comment. In this live version in a church, it seems to me that they are actually doing the "mixing" themselves by virtue of their dynamics and selfless teamwork. Which is, of course, how it was always done before modern engineering. Beautiful rendition.

it's not just practice... it's listening to each other- as a trained singer and former pro acapella singer, who has recorded in similar surroundings- the way that they listen to each other and can get the synergy- that's true musicianship. Kirsten, Mitch & Scott were all choir kids and did the whole musical theatre stuff so that's probably part of that, but Scott's hands are always so expressive when he sings. Some of the older vids where he's playing piano & singing he has to keep forcing his hand back onto the keys because it lifted up time and time again. It's kinda funny to watch and impressive that he was still doing such an amazing job at playing despite it...I couldn't even manage playing the piano with both hands firmly in place lol..maybe that was the problem...hmm. lol

Technically, sound waves all travel at the same speed (through any given medium), regardless of pitch. Some pitches do benefit more from tight acoustical spaces than others, but it's not because of speed; it's because of how well (and how far) they carry, which as best I understand it is probably due to how much energy they have (which is customarily thought of as primarily a function of amplitude, but wavelength *is* also relevant), although it's also true that some surfaces are more likely to absorb, refract, or reflect various wavelengths. (In the context of sound, wavelength is essentially the same phenomenon as pitch; there's a technical distinction between the meanings of the words "wavelength" and "pitch", but any given pitch corresponds to one specific wavelength and vice versa. Wavelength has other implications for other kinds of waves, of course, but we're talking about sound here.)

"When they were super relevant"...they still are very relevant. They just performed at the Target Center in MN for over 11,000 people lol. I think they get comfortable sticking with the same venues in the US thru the years I agree it would nice for fans for them to switch it up occasionally, like hit Indiana instead of Illinois for example so itd be easier for some fans to get to a concert.

Someone mentioned Avi's choral training. He was an Opera/Classical major in college (minor in composing and arranging) and performed with 3 choral groups at that college. He was offered a position with the Los Angeles Opera just before he was recruited into Pentatonix, and had also been contemplating a career as a musical director. He often does workshops at colleges and high schools, coaching and directing, such as you'll see in the link I'm posting that he did in 2017 shortly before leaving PTX. He's conducting a PTX piece he was the primary writer of, "Run To You" (co-written with Kevin and arranged with Ben Bram). Watch his movements. I especially like how, when they get to "How shall I win back", he goes up on his toes, leaning forward with his arm to draw the voices out in a small crescendo. kzread.info/dash/bejne/qo2KstuwaLSflqw.html

You may not be aware of this, but, back in 2014, Avi established the A Cappella Academy along with Ben Bram (longtime PTX producer/arranger) and Rob Dietz (composer/arranger), which is a 10-day intensive annual summer music camp for 13-18 year olds from around the world, where they learn vocals, performance, theory, and specialties like beatboxing and bass singing (which Avi has often coached). At the end of the 10 days, they do a showcase, with individual groups and the full choir. To give you an idea of what these kids achieve in such a short time, here's the 2019 class performing Avi's original song "The Seed".kzread.info/dash/bejne/io5sm6SBnbXMp9Y.html

Scott does bass when AVI sings …. So here it’s probably Scott helping AVI. Kevin is a tenor

Avi is the only bass in this song. Scott will sing bass only when Avi is singing lead. Don’t know if that is still true with Matt.

I don't know enough about music to tell (though I think I have a pretty good ear for pitch) but someone in another comment stream was rhapsodizing about the way none of them are actually singing the primary melody - ALL of them are singing a harmony line. I'm listening closely and I see what they mean - and it's friggin' AWESOME. These guys are just mind-blowing.

This was actually done very early in their career. Definitely not done at home. And possibly recorded on an iPad. Many of the Evolution videos were done live, one setting, filmed and recorded on an iPad. They were broke and recording videos on Avi's iPad in caves, staircases, hallways, etc. Then they recorded & filmed Daft Punk Medley on the iPad & they won their 1st Grammy Award! Amazing story! There should be a movie made of their story! 💞

Actually, the only iPad video they posted was their first one on their YT channel. The Evolution videos with the black backgrounds were all recorded in a studio and had to do multiple takes to get the right live one-take video. (There is at least one “making of” video for I think the Beyoncé medley on YT somewhere.) You can tell the increasing quality of their “couch” videos filmed back in 2012, showing the better tech they were using.

Great reaction guys, I learned a lot from it. Actually, they played the Denver Pepsi Center a couple of years ago but unfortunately I couldn't make it. Red Rocks might be a little small as they usually do venues with pretty massive capacity. But maybe they will get to Denver again in the not too distant future.

Merry Christmas, you guys! I really enjoy your perspective about the work these guys do - my unschooled viw is kind of limited to "whoa, pretty!" so it's great to understand more of how they make this such a unique group. Since you have discussed the production process I saw that this 17 minute video just came out of them working in the studio on their new album that was just released at the end of October and thought you would enjoy it. All the best of the season! kzread.info/dash/bejne/f2pkta2Em7SyodI.html

Do you realize often you step in on the on each other quite often? (Based on the multiple videos of yours I jave watched).. Love hearing both perspectives because you both have such valuable comments. It just jumps out as a bit disruptive when that happens. Just wanted to point that out in case you are unaware. The last half of this video had a wonderful commentary flow and the comments were quite insightful and interesting.. Just for reference... Happy Holidays gents!
