You will have to run your torpedoes deeper due to the large waves. They are broaching

Captain Taff, Here is a full supply of our venerable Mark 14 torpedoes. With the new top secret magnetic pistol, our torpedoes are guaranteed to detonate every time. We've tested them in our equatorial testing grounds. We wish you and your men happy hunting. Sincerely, United States Bureau of Ordnance
Dud was horrible to watch 😳... I almost expected Taff to paddle over there with a dinghy and drill holes into that last ship.
Nice to see plunger is still plucking about in the south pacific
we all detonate prematurely from time to time. don't let it shake you, Taff, happens to the best of us
The book about the Wahoo is an excellent story about the career of the sub and crew, totally recommend👍

"Another running gun battle today. Destroyer gunning, Wahoo running."
That was a bit of nostalgia seeing Plunger! Keep working hard captain.
The crew of the Salmon was doubtful of the reports of the unreliable mk 14 torpedo, until today.
to get on that rear aa gun use F11 key repeatedly; will switch you between the front gun and the rear gun . I use keyboard you use the command room objects to select your area, interesting game choice
The acoustic one missing was the cherry on top to these shenanigans

It’s meant for destroyers belting it which are pretty loud vs merchant ships tbh
@RemusKingOfRome

Crashing waves probably louder than the ship.
To be fair, suspect torpedoes IS the historical experience. Though probably run em deeper when the seas are rough.
7:50 "The island of... New Island." I'm fairly sure the guys naming this location also came to the conclusion that the ocean was made out of ocean. XD

Was it actually New Ireland? It's in roughly the right place.
76% failure rate in action. Just be glad they don't seem to circle run in the game, or you'd be in for a whole lot more fun. In weather like that, you have to set them to run deeper and hope they don't decide to run too deep. Or set them just deep enough to account for the extra 11 feet they tended to run. But in waves like that, they're going to porpoise if you surface run them which will make them pop early when they slam into a wave.

I'd love a circle run to end this career!
Yep need to set torp depth deeper in bad weather
are you adjusting the torpedo's to run deeper? The magnetic exploder would pre-maturely detonate in heavy waves due to the magnetic field changing..setting the torpedo to about 2/3 keel depth helped for impact fuses, plus hitting deeper on the bottom of the boat makes it flood ALOT faster...but the magnetic detonator was crappy to begin with. Keep em coming!!!!
All those torpedoes for one damn tanker. You’ve got a Jonah on your boat.
May the forth be with you 😂
WWII sub stuff is awesome. Great narration!
thst was almost incredible to watch, so many duds are just weird, thank you Taaff
Another Taff sub flick; all's right with the world!!! Automatic kudos.
You've been lucky in the dud department actually.
Doing well, but you need to begin running submerged mostly during the day especailly if youre close to any large land mass...remember IJN aircraft had LONG ranges, and you might get more air attacks than you can handle, plus they will call up any local surface assets (destroyers) and try to sink you.
due to the waves try the depth and sometimes in stormy weather i find setting them to impact instead of magnetic sometimes help
Yeah you do need to set more depth for bad sea states which is why they were exploding prematurely.
Both, German and American early torpedoes were always unreliable during rough weather.

And British. The UK navy had the honour of seeing them malfunction from a cruiser so had enough evidence to get them actually fixed when they duded on them. It was still in the 2nd year of the war but
the waves are def the issue

gotta love the Mk 14
Great episode taff, great work in sinking those enemy pickets and merchants despite the short comings you had. So.. the dreaded Mk.14 torpedo failures hit you hard in this one, mind you that's an occupational hazard, my brother in law has them all the time when he plays this, on one occasion he said he fired nearly all his shots and like what you suffered in this one, some shots detonated prematurely.. and others simply failed to go off, mind you he did say he admired that despite it being a hard core sub-sim.. said it makes you feel the irritation that actual sub captains went through and appreciate a lot more what they managed to achieve with such problematic weapons. I haven't played this so, I can only go by what I'm seeing and looking at actual historical details and accurate information, but yeah.. tough one this episode, still you did a great job with the problems you we're dealt. Failure is like onions with the MK.14, I'd do some praying every time you fire any more of those in the future, excellent episode.. just excellent, keep it up and well done mate 👏 👍
Those were some close calls. A near dudly incident
Well, the Mark XIV curse was bound to happen sooner or later. Running them as deep as possible, just shy of the target draft depth, seems to help. Taff, it occurs to me that if the target ship has developed a list, her draft is even deeper than the published draft depth, right????
Hiya . I think your videos are Great . thankyou Taff ,I wish you would do tutorial vids as you are very clued up with this game , HELP Thanks bud 👍👍👍👍
Those weren't duds - duds hit a ship and don't explode. Those prematurely exploded because they were running shallow in large waves.
Taff...this is accurate to how bad the Mk 14 was...a skipper fired all his torps bar 1 and every last one failed and it wasn't a skill issue either. The BUord should have been charged for War Crimes of Gross Negligence towards the USN IMHO. The Acoustic Torpedo likely missed as the Tankers engines were dead already so had nothing to track - the 2nd you must have aimed directly for her. Pick up some Mk 10's...shorter range of 3000 yards but they work
Contact exploder on slow speed
6:22 is it possible to pick up the floating boxes left by sunk ships to get more supplies?
Plunger still plunging
Wow, did you walk under a ladder or something ? ... still a good haul despite the duds.
Remember to have contact set
On target near the stern
Taff, have you watched the KZread vid on the Salmon? Made in the 50's, it is 25 mins long and retells a story of an encounter from 1944. Search USS Salmon up stream to watch.
Do you need extra crew to man the extra gun?
Torpedoes impact or magnetic?
Spend some coin on the better torpedoes please.
When do the Mk.18s appear?
Is this sub an add on?
8th!!!
60th
First.
Hahah, gremlins!
You ask me, those duds were karma coming back on you for sinking that junk and the sampan. Most likely unarmed, fishing boats doing nothing connected with the war, crewed by civilians whose, homelands have been occupied by the Japanese. It's like kicking a puppy, and probably a war crime. You ain't having a lot of luck atv the moment mate.

Seventh Fleet issued Bulletin 15 authorizing attacks on sampans and junks in 1943. Losses of larger cargo vessels prompted the Japanese to utilize them to haul cargo and ammunition, making them legitimate targets.

Hi Dude! Well, those torpedoes were not dud (which is German word for faulty), the machine gun turrets were shooting them down, mark14s had compressed air propulsion, so they were leaving trails of bubbles... easy to shoot down. And the acoustic ones, the early models needed quite a noise to be present, so ship mu travel like over 14 knots at last other vice they did not home...
On the plus side, you've given lots of Japanese merchant sailors panic attacks.
