Sigurd the Crusader - Viking Crusader Song [Old Norse] HD Remake | The Skaldic Bard

Ойын-сауық

Here's a remake of my song Sigurd the Crusader. I've decided to remake a lot of my earlier songs as I have to admit, until shamefully recently, I was still making them on my phone with the built-in phone microphone. As a result, the quality is less than desirable on a lot of my earlier stuff.
Music, lyrics and performance by myself.
The song is written in Old Norse to commemorate the Norse hero Sigurd the Crusader (Sigurðr Jórsalafari, literally "Sigurd the Jerusalem-Farer"). The events relayed in the song are given in the Saga of Sigurd the Crusader, attributed to Snorri Sturluson.
Sigurd wended his way from Norway down to England, whence he moved on to Iberia, and fought “heathen” (in the saga this word refers to Muslims) pirates and soldiers that were occupying the peninsular and the Balearic Islands. From there they go through Sicily and onwards to Acre and Jerusalem, where King Baldwin I of Jerusalem bids Sigurd assist on a military campaign to Sidon to recover lands for Christendom.
I hope you enjoy the song!
It goes without saying that I'm not aiming to glorify violence against others, rather I wish to teach history through song.

Lyrics:
Baldvini konungr ræðr Jórsalaríki.
Nú fǫrum vér þangat undir merki Sigurðs.
Þeir unnu sér mikinn sigr yfir serkjum,
en á oss heita þeir. Verjum konungdóminn!
Með sex tǫgum skipa ok fimm þúsund manna
Siglum vér um haustit til Englands
Hann var konungr, konungr Norðmanna!
Hann fór til Jórsala ok kom at liði Baldvina!
Hann sigldi suðr, suðr til heiðnu landa!
Með einni rǫddu heiðrum vér Sigurð Jórsalafara!
Þá er siglum vestr fyrir Spán ór Galizulandi
sjám víkinga nǫkkura fara at féfangi
Til orrostu fyrstrar leggjum vér við heiðna
ok af þeim vinnum vér átta galeiðr.
Þá fór Sigurðr til kastala Sintrés.
Vann hann kastalann ok kristnaði fólkit!
Hann var konungr, konungr Norðmanna!
Hann fór til Jórsala ok kom at liði Baldvina!
Hann sigldi suðr, suðr til heiðnu landa!
Með einni rǫddu heiðrum vér Sigurð Jórsalafara!
Sigurðr konungr helt liðinu þá til
borgar Lizibónar, er var margr heiðingi.
Átti þar konungr ina þriðju orrostu.
Lagði þaðan út til Nǫrvasunda.
Á eyjum þeim, er heita Forminterra
Iviza ok Manork hǫfðum vér sigr!
Hann var konungr, konungr Norðmanna!
Hann fór til Jórsala ok kom at liði Baldvina!
Hann sigldi suðr, suðr til heiðnu landa!
Með einni rǫddu heiðrum vér Sigurð Jórsalafara!
Siglum um Sikileyjar ok hann Roðgeir jarl.
Þaðan siglum vér inn til Akrsborgar.
Fagnaði honum vel Baldvini konungr
ok gaf Sigurði dóma ok spán af Krossi Helga.
Þá fóru þeir saman til Sýrlands ok bǫrðusk.
Tóku borg, Sæt, er hann gaf Baldvina.
Hann var konungr, konungr Norðmanna!
Hann fór til Jórsala ok kom at liði Baldvina!
Hann sigldi suðr, suðr til heiðnu landa!
Með einni rǫddu heiðrum vér Sigurð Jórsalafara!
Hann hafði fremd kristni með ǫllum mætti.
Hann fór til skipa sinna ok ór Jórsalalandi.
Sigldum vér til Griklands ok inn til Miklagarðs.
Kirjalax keisari fagnaði Sigurði.
Hann gaf þá keisara ǫll skip sín ok fór heim,
en margir aðrir dvǫlðusk ok gengu á mála.
Hann var konungr, konungr Norðmanna!
Hann fór til Jórsala ok kom at liði Baldvina!
Hann sigldi suðr, suðr til heiðnu landa!

Fantastic! Fun facts - Sigurd was only 18 years old when he lead the crusade (1108-1111). His great grandfather was Harald Hardråde, who died at Stamford bridge in 1066. When he died in 1130, the Norwegian civil war broke out.

This song is genuinely mind blowing for me. To hear Old Norse pronounced correctly and transformed into a new song with original lyrics. Since most bands who sing in Old Norse are generally Pagan and don't know the language and have to use the Eddas for lyrics, this automatically entirely separates you from them in the best way possible! Finding your channel is certainly one of the best things that's happened to me in these past five years. These songs have helped me develop my own accent and pronunciation with speaking Old Norse and taught me so much history of the Christian kings of Norway, which are effectively becoming my favorite kings in Norwegian history, alongside King Haraldr Yngling and Haraldr Harðráði. I still can't believe that the Norwegians became Crusaders! Quite literally Christian Vikings who achieved greater fame, sailed to further seas, and earned greater glory than their pagan forefathers. It's genuinely so incredible to me and you have my deepest thanks for teaching this history in the tongue of the Northmen with your own incredible music! Skál, bróðir!

Ah yes, just casually give your fleet to the emperor in exchange for a bunch of horses because of sheer will to travel by land and visit more realms. Sigurd was probably the most passionate "tourist" of his time. I bet he became a crusader just to see the Mediterranean, with killing Sarracines as just a cherry on top. Anyway, thank you far your work, Skald. It is probably a ton of work to create any of your beautiful songs.

All your songs i have heard so far are wonderful in no matter the language you have made them in. Infact, it feels like your voice is changing each time you sing in some other tounge. I wonder, will we ever hear you singing in modern english? Just for once, for the sake of experimentation?

I have the impression that Nordic Christians were among the few who cared about baptizing non-Christians during the times of the Crusades. Or, at least, they were the ones who made the most effort. Both Norwegians (Sigurd or Saint Rognvald) and Danes (in the crusade against the Wends, the Germans would conquer them but didn't care about baptizing and evangelizing, whereas the Danes did!) and Swedes, whenever they went on a crusade, never failed to try to baptize pagans or non-Christians.
