Sigurd the Crusader | The Viking Crusade

The Norwegian crusade marks the first time a European king personally went to the holy land. King Sigurd was already a hardened battle veteran having spent a lot of his teen years fighting in Ireland and the Scottish Isles with his father Magnus Strife Lover, even being named King of the Isles, which consisted of the Isles of Man, and the Hebrides. Sigurd would eventually take the fight to Middle East sparking the Norwegian Crusade. But who was Sigurd the Crusader? This is his story.

Sigurd's Crusade, when seen in retrospect, is the last act of a true viking attitude A poetic end of the Viking Age, once they plunder churches and in the end they became instrumental in the Crusades

The end of the Viking Age was officially in 1066, but in truth, I think it's more complicated than that. The Viking raids did not just stop in their tracks. Some raids continued against still-pagan lands, with the Christian Norse claiming the actions in the name of God. They also kept a presence at the Byzantine Court long after the so-called "Viking Age."

@@sgauden02 yeah, even though nominaly they stopped their worship of the Aesir pantheon and replaced it for the christian one is easy to forget how both religions influenced each other. Christianity had to adapt his philisophy to be understandable to the brutal norse world that still was very animistic and war centered. Festivities and thoughts were changed in favor for the christian religion little by little until paganism was relegated to traditions outside of cities. The werewolf myth and ulfhednar warrior being one example of how the stories changed

Only if you include the part where he literally went insane with PTSD and was closely watched and then almost overthrown by his nobles, until he dejectedly told them that he was pretty much the devil they knew vs. the other guy who was he devil they didn't know. Better an insane guy who can be tied down like him than an actual lucid tyrant.

Sigurd the Crusader, only Viking king to go on Crusade. Also the only Viking king to return from the Holy Land balls-out insane with PTSD and hallucinations that haunted him for the rest of his life, to the point that he was widely hated and mocked in his own lifetime. The only reason he was allowed to keep his throne was because his nobles agreed with him that better the devil they knew than the challengers.

Ive seen some Crusaders docus, but didnt know Sigurd Jorsalfare (Jorsal means Jerusalem) was a Crusader, and successful, Id say . and that he was the one that established the Varangian guard, Orthodox church loyal guards. Very facinating . the usual narrative is that vikings were Pagan brutes, but they fought for "white christ" they called Jesus . And not many know the Vikings also established the russian Tsars, and the Kiev. Rus, means "to Row". The Rus-People is the vikings . They rowed, where they could not sail, someone told me . The story of King Sverre and the birkebeiners comes just after this . He wants to take the throne from King Magnus . Both are christian men .
