My son had surgery for cancer in his salivary gland when he was 12 years old. The dr. had to cut his ear off and lift it back to reach the cancerous gland. No one thought to take note if his ear lobes were genetically attached (like his dad’s) or unattached (like mine). You guessed it, they reattached it the wrong way…unattached. So now he has one of each. He’s in his thirty’s now, it has never bothered him. In fact in high school biology when their teacher told the class that a person had either attached or unattached earlobes but never one of each . He and his friends had a good time “proving her wrong”. Thankfully the cancer was removed with one short surgery and he has never had anymore problems. The surgery was preformed at MD Anderson, an amazing hospital. It was a very unusual cancer for anyone, especially a child. All glory to God!

I stopped wearing make up decades ago and my skin has benefitted. I have no desire to pretend to be years younger than I am. There is a grace and beauty in aging and these procedures simply stoke the culture of youth when the wisdom that life experience brings is of more importance.

I stopped wearing makeup, too, only some light eyeshadow, because I love to match colors to my outfits. And I agree that we shouldn't stoke the culture of youth, and that wisdom is far more important. That being said, it is an unfortunate reality that that wisdom comes at the price of physical decay. I don't want to look young (I never even did when I was young), but sagging skin is just a reminder of decay, and I don't want that.

Many people in the industry came to him and I was surprised by a few he turned down, telling them they didn't need a facelift yet. One you showed of this video. Go for the facelift. Don't let moral judgement stand in the way of something that really interests you. There's nothing graceful about hanging skin, and there's no reason to allow natural decay. I want to age as the best version of myself. What is graceful? Elegance, attractiveness, grooming. What is natural? We exercise in man-made facilities with machines, we watch our diet with supplements and carefully produced foods, we get dental care like fillings and implants, we go to the hair salon to get our hair cut and colored. We use cars, cell phones, appliances, computers, medical drugs, flush toilets. Taking advantage of modern commodities and technology is not a bad thing. Aging leads to death. While death can't be avoided, the natural path to it is not a glorious one. I say, get your facelift and be happy about it.

Claudia, I agree with you. After looking at a lot of after pictures by different surgeons of different ethnicities, I am curious if the ethnicity of the plastic surgeon plays a big role. I wonder if it’s because when a plastic surgeon sees his or her reflection or has grown up in a certain culture they would apply what is familiar and what they are surrounded with as an artistic eye to their patients.

Hello Claudia, I just had a great face lift, and my doctor actually said as a compliment that , African American women ,even at 70 look so good, that they don't need a face lift. I have noticed that people like the gorgeous Dianne Carroll looked a bit aged by 80, though. I also have been noticing that the many great facelift doctors in the world are of Scandinavian descent . I think it's because people in that part of the world age sooner, being fair skinned. I'm a medium skin caucasian and aged way better than most of the Nordic people. Still, with everyone living longer, there is a market for African American face lifts and someone should start specializing in it. My makeup artist is a very dark African American and went to an African American plastic surgeon for an upper eye lift over 10 years ago and had a droop in one eye, and lots of problems correcting it. He thought his surgeon would understand how to work with his heavier skin texture, just because he had the same skin. So it doesn't matter what the race of the surgeon is as long as he/she understands what to do. I agree there needs to be work and attention paid to different ethnic skin types in plastic surgery. A lot of business is being missed out.

I don’t think I’ll ever be able to afford a facelift, but I’d love to know to what extent fat transfer and lasers can help the mid 60’s face. My diet is good and I live in a colder clime but I’ve got the dreaded jowls and fat loss

There are also subspecialties in plastic surgery. :) For example, the oculo-plastic surgeons who ~only work on eyes~. They tend to work on the worst cases such correcting damage done by hyperthyroid eye disease. Patients can get that bulgy goldfish eye look. (Exophthalmia.) Quite socially crippling and it can cause other issues. 💔 Those surgeons can mostly reverse that. (!) Genius. It’s important to find someone who does a certain set of procedures all day, every day. Avoid those who claim they ‘can do everything’ and do it masterfully. [Nobody can live up to that.] 😩

My smile is now wonky, I’m 70, in my late 60s a nerve/muscle on one side of my mouth “dropped”, it doesn’t work the same as the other side when I smile. Drs aren’t concerned, nor am I. It’s just age. I do wonder if many of the overdone changes are due to clients insisting, going against the Drs advice.

Sometimes its not obvious that someone had facelift. One case Im totally confused: Jim Carrey. He looks like who had a good sleep and I know when he looked old he had problems (depression, burn out, etc). So maybe he is just happy now. Or he may have had plastic surgery. What do you think???

5 Years ago my sister underwent a breast amputation because she had breast cancer. Not so long ago she had a breast reconstruction. It’s amazing what can be done nowadays. This new breast makes her feel so much better. She feels “whole” again. Now I must say that I am lucky to live in a country where cancer treatments, revalidation, psychological therapy, wigs and even reconstructive surgery is greatly covered by our social system. Otherwise people would be broke after having cancer.

Hi Dr M, I'm having a chin implant and buccal lipectomy next thursday. Do you think I should ask for the implant to be screwed in? I've seen Dr Joe Niamtu talk a lot about the fact that 99% of the complications/bone erosion/implant movement he sees is caused by implants not being secured to the bone so am wondering if its preferred

  • @GaryMotykie

The most obvious tell-rale sign to be is a 70 years old with no turkey neck or jowls, or lines around mouth. If I'm gonna pay upwards of $30,000, I want people to know that it wasn't the turmeric diet. The funniest excuse I ever heard was someone trying to tell me she looked so much younger because of Retin-A. That stuff's good, but not that good.
