Great video Julia. Thank you for comparing both lenses. And thank you for pointing out the that sigma lens needs to be calibrated and updated to as well. That last shot you took with the model with the light on her face was amazing.
"You just can't seem to wrong with a Canon Lens, even though you have to mortgage your house to be able to buy one". I have always loved Canon Cameras and lens. Great video as always, Thanks, Paul Milovich
Cool! both 35mm f1.4 love this comparisons. Great shots as always
I think i would get the sigma in this cace. I always try to get canon prime lenses but I have seen some beautiful shots taken with the sigma 35 with some of my friends and I think that for the price point it has, it is quite good.
Katya is an amazing model and these photos are beautiful! Can’t wait for the tamron comparison!

Very worthwhile comparison Julia. Lots to consider when comparing the image rendering and the economics of the two lenses.
Hey Julia. Great video as usual, and nice of you to mention the focus point. Gotta say I prefer the Canon. I've never had much luck with Sigma lenses being consistent, so I stay away from them these days and stretch the budget to the L series. Cheers. David

Finally someone make this comparation 🙌🏼
The photos were great regardless of lens. The review was really helpful. Can the Sigma sharpness and under exposure be made equal to the Canon lens by adding OCF?
The model your working with here is excellent. Very natural. I loved how she responded to you saying sit on the steps. All her expressions are so real . I prefer the full length as a pose to upclose. Would a tripod make any difference? We adapt our Canon lenses to Sony mirrorless. Great vid Thanks ps the Canon glass seems to likes complexion and skin texture more than Sigma.
OMG I've been waiting for this video for years now. Really loved it, it was so good to see the difference of sharpness and focusing, many people say the Sigma focus is amazing, but when we compare like that we see that's not always the case

Yay thank you so much, I'm glad you liked it!!
I can always count on Julia having the video I'm looking for.
Great video as always! I see that you switch back and forth between the Sony and Canon. Is this more for video variety or do you still love the Canon and hate to put it down compared to the Sony?
What made you choose the Zeiss 35mm 1.4 over the sigma for you Sony a7iii? Great video!
I am a Sigma user due to both price and performance. I recently picked up the 35 1.4 art and love what I am getting from it! I am waiting for summer in Chicago to get some outdoor portraits and test the bokeh more. BTW I love your work and enjoy your videos! You could be a model too! lol.
Julia, i love your channel and style in photography, thank you for making photo related content in this high quality :) About the lens... i saw a few images with slightly missed focus, even with the really precise middle focus point. I'm using a 5d4 body myself, and i had all the issues you can possibly imagine with these lenses. Actually the 3rd copy of my 50mm Art worked properly. (the first copy was missing focus more what you can fix at home with the usb dock, the second one, even after calibration gave me shots with missed focus, sometimes it produced front focus, and then, in a really similar situation, i was backfocusing...) unfortunately, for both sigma and tamron lenses on DSLR-s, the usb dock is a must. on the positive side, if you spend that small amount of time to calibrate your lens to your camera body, it will gives you an amazingly reliable performance and the peace of mind! i had the 50mm ART, and i got the 35mm as well a few days ago, this weekend i'm gonna finetune that too, really worth a few hours just to make sure you have the AF right, and then, you don't have to worry about any focusing issues!

Since buying the 5D IV, I have been looking for a fast prime, this came down to the Canon 35mm 1.4 L, Sigma 35mm 1.4 or the Tamron 35mm SP. This channels reviews of these lens have been helpful in my choice to go for the Canon lens. My brother 's wedding is coming up in the summer 2023, which I will use to photograph the guest, plus can't wait to try some night time photo shoots. Finally I would like to say thank you, Julia for the great reviews.

Thoughts on the 35mm RF compared to these two? 1.8 vs 1.4s, but would be nice, haha. Great chill video as always Julia!
Sony has spoiled me with Eye AF 🙃 But I’m really wanting to get a Leica rangefinder and just take it old school for a bit. Great video!
I’m also using a 5D mark iV I recently bought a Tamron 35mm f1.4 but it turns out the focus wasn’t accurate. So I fiddled around the AF micro adjustment settings and the lens sharpness is insane. So I recommend for people who are getting 3rd party lenses to try play around your micro adjustments setting after buying it
your edits are amazing!
Does the 5d allow you to micro adjust lenses? If so you don't need the dock. Also if you go in live view you get the same mirrorless focusing features. I actually bought a screen viewfinder for my camera for when I want to do that.
hey! which picture profile do you shoot in? Standard or a custom settting? Thanks!
I have the sigma and I’m about to get the eos r! Can’t wait to see the results on a mirrorless!!

I'm enjoying your review and portrait every time. But sigma released new lens on Sony. Which better lens that sigma 1.4 or sigma 1.2 for portrait?
Hello Julia, did you have to calibrate the Canon 35 to your camera body?
I missed that EF 35 ii. It's the best lens I know. I traded it with the RF 35. The RF is noisy, slow, not as sharp, as bright, or as pop than the EF. But I hate adapting lens to the point it feels like a tele. Fortunately the size, the macro and the I.S is what makes it as worth as the EF 35 ii.
best review of lens comparation!!!!! thanks
After looking at your post-processed images, I have to ask, have you ever tried any fuji camera with the classic chrome film simulation? I think you would enjoy it immensely.

Nice video but I this that Sigma might have been a dud or needed a micro adjustment on your camera. Its supposed to be super sharp from everything I have heard. You mention at the 6:05 mark that it wouldn't be an issue on the EOS R and you're right, so when are you switching to the R? :) Eye AF is sooooo much better than focus and recompose on a DSLR. Way more keepers too.
What do you think of the new Sony 35mm 1.8 for a travel lens as I know you have the a7iii?
Your editing is insane ! I adore it !!!! have a nice start in this year !
For less than half and almost as good the sigma is the way to go, i got one for my 90D and im loving it.
I’ve been struggling with the correct calibration for sharp images. Any tips please?
I have randomly picked a video, seeking your suggestion. I am planning to buy Canon 77D. Will it be wise to buy canon 85mm f1.8 and canon 40mm f2.8(pancake)? Or replace one of them by 50mm f1.8/4
I bought the canon 35 1.4II after watching your video when you bought it and I love it so far. No hate towards Sigma really but I know I can always count on an L series. I have a shoot today and it’s the only lens I’m bringing with me.🤘

It really is worth the investment for that lens in my opinion. I loved the mk1 of Canon's 35mm 1.4, but the mk2 version is out of this world!
hi.. i need advise . will it be worthy to buy 35mm 1.4 sigma art with my existing camera (canon 550D) or upgrade cam body to canon 6d and stay with my existing lens (canon 50mm 1.8 II)? thanks in advance ...
Hey Julia, I can currently get a good deal on the Canon 35mm 1.4 L II for like 1100 bucks. I'm torn between that or the Tamron version. The Tamron version seems better than the sigma. But I can't compare it to the canon version properly. Personally I just think there's something about that Canon L look (Might be biased, lol). What would you do in my situation? Opt for the canon one? Also, comparing the Tamron to the Canon 35 II might be a great video idea for you. ;) Can't find any solid comparison video. I think you'd nail it!
Another beautiful shoot 🖤 also i love sigma lenses

I noticed that you seem to tilt the camera up when pushing the shutter. Are you doing that on purpose? Doesn't that introduce a bit of camera shake?
Loved the video! :) I wanted to get the sigma art 35.. but now I'm not so sure.. it's good to know the downsides 😊 could you maybe sometime do a video on the Tamron 35mm 1.4 vs. the Canon or Sigma 1.4? I think you did a review on the lens alone already, but I'm so curious how it holds up :)

Hey Julia where is the location at the start of the video I’d like to try it out
I have been struggling with my Sigma 35 mm focussing inconsistency from last one year!! I wish Sigma would make a mark 2 version of this lens because it's very problematic to use this lens in a dynamic environment especially in a wedding where one can end up missing an important moment with this lens!!

This is a very known problem with dslr and sigma art. Sometimes you don’t resolve this even with the sigma dock. The great news is that on mirrorless there isn’t any of this problem with any lens

It's such a shame because it's a nice lens otherwise 😫if you've already tried calibrating it and it still didn't fix the issue, the only suggest I have is to take some extra photos during a shoot, which is what I did while I was using this lens just to make sure I had some sharp ones :)
@rushorahman

It's very interesting how the same lens is super sharp and accurate in mirrorless A7iii but not in 6d mark ii. I also had the same issue with my sigma 35, even after using the dock to calibrate it properly. The dock didn't help much. Rather I Microadjusted my 6D mark ii for the lens and it's now good. No more soft focus and tact sharp on the spot. :)

I have a similar issue with the Sigma 50mm art. Although the back focus issue was largely sorted with calibration, it still isn't consistent. Considering switching to Canon 1.2 although understand that focus on this is slow. Does anyone have any views?
Great model, what was the video filmed on, amazing quality. I bought the sigma because its a bokeh God, but I concede the Canon is much sharper and better focusing in lower light.

Is an adapter needed for a Canon r6 if I plan to purchase a Sigma 35mm 1.4 lens? If so, which adapter? Thank you.
Hey Julia how would you compare it to the mark i? I'm considering buying a used 35mm 1.4 mark i, but I am not sure if I should just buy a new sigma 35mm...
@juliatrotti
4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I feel like they are both quite similar! On a DSLR I just had the focusing issues on the Sigma where I didn’t on the Canon mk1, if you’re using a mirrorless though you won’t have that issue 😊
Loved this! Hey Julia darling would you consider during a tutorial on your focus and recompose method please? Pretty please? I think I'm doing it wrong, not getting enough keepers, I also BBF which might be the problem. Any thoughts? :(
@juliatrotti
4 жыл бұрын
I already have 2 videos about how I focus on my channel! If you haven't seen those yet you should check them out :) That's the method I've always used and still use today! Also BBF or shutter focus doesn't really matter, it's just what's more comfortable for you. I could never get used to BBF for some reason even though lots of people love it, so just experiment with both until you find one that you prefer!
I think the autofocus is quite off especially on the Sigma. Perhaps it would be better to compare using thee DPAF with its eye-detection?
Apart from sharpness, there is a difference in skin tones as well.
How did you achieve consistent exposure and af point placement? I struggled with the exposure part and i usually focus and recompose but mode of my subjects arent moving.
@juliatrotti

Lots of practice will make changing your exposure and focus point second nature eventually! I always have my thumb on the joystick and am constantly moving my focus point around and then my index is usually right on the shutter wheel to change that as needed too :)

@@juliatrotti I just updated from the 5DIV to the EOS-R and I do have the Sigma 35 Art, but I don't have any people to shoot because of the lockdown. I do know that for "objects" around the house, focus is very accurate. Also, I updated the lens firmware with the Sigma dock and that makes the AF work faster, and allows for full compatibility with the EOS-R lens corrections. That's an important step. Since you shoot lots of models, I would take your word for how well it performs over my own experience with static objects. LOL
these pictures are shot at different shutter speeds which can change the sharpness of the photo. maybe use same settings?

Great video! Side note: is hear 2 different accents. American English and Australian English. Am I right, and how?
Here’s a quick question that is from someone not totally a noob on this. How are you getting both eyes in focus at 1.4 when they’re not on the same plane? Are you stepping back some and cropping? Maybe it’s just having high expectations of my modest gear, although I figure DOF at 35mm 1.4 is still the same regardless of gear.
@juliatrotti

Mostly from lots of practice keeping myself/my lens at the right angle to the model's face. I can mostly get both eyes in focus if it's a straight on shot of the model, but if she turns to the side or has more of an angle to her face then only one is in focus :)

Julia Trotti Yeah this is my experience, so it’s good to know a better photographer is the same! Thanks!
I love my Sigma art lenses. They never disappoint and are FAR superior in contrast and resolution to any second hand Canon-L glass I own and can afford. Sure, there's the new Canon L stuff which might have the edge but costs THREE to FOUR times as much where I live. Sigma ART is where it's at. I do use mirrorless so there are no focus issues in my case.

agreed, canon lenses are overpriced for negligible gains. all my stuff is sigma art and they're razor sharp, in some cases sharper than canon L glass.
