Sigma 14-24 Art Lens Review (impossibly Wide)

Sigma’s 14-24 f2.8 Art Series lens deserves more attention than it gets. It’s significantly less expensive than it’s 16-35 counterparts, but delivers some awesomely unique results (especially on a full frame camera).
Here’s a run down of the pros and cons from my point of view, and why I think this is a standout choice. 14mm is especially helpful with a camera like the EOS R, which uses a cropped 4k setting.

I reviewed the Canon version of this lens, but it’s also available for Sony and Nikon mounts as well.

Very useful review. I just settled on this lens myself for my Canon 6D MKii, though it hasn't arrived yet. Your review is making me feel better about the decision (over the Canon 16-35L F4 IS). I really wanted something faster than F4 but not at Canon prices (I already own too much expensive L glass). I use digital stabilization a lot so the image gets cropped. I believe this lens will work perfect in that scenario when my 24-70L f2.8 isn't quite wide enough. Sub'd!

I’m interested in this lens! My 16-35 2.8 is starting to have focus problems, and I don’t mean auto focus problems. Even in manual focus one side of the frame is blurry, and lens repair is expensive. I do shoot with R6, and I do have a filter adaptor, mostly interested in this for Astro timelapse’s, I think this lens could be a good fit for me!

They’re both GREAT lenses. It’s depends on your needs. If you’re planning to do landscapes and outdoor work where the f4 aperture isn’t an issue, the Canon is terrific. If you need better low light performance and slightly shallower depth of field, the Sigma is a better choice.

For wide stuff, I mostly shoot D850 20mm 1.8 lightweight prime it usually works with incredible sharpness. For wider needs I have the 14mm Rokinon 2.8 manual, it's actually a pretty good budge wide angle, but man it's hard to nail focus unless you're on sticks shooting landscape. I just ordered the Sigma14-24 it's pretty obvious Nikon needs to update some of their iconic glass.

If you had to choose one, would you choose sigma 14-24 or the sigma 24? Oh and love your content. It's definitely helping me. I just purchased the eos r with 35mm f1.8 and I wanted to get another lense that can deal with the 4k crop and if not 4k crop i want something that is sharp in 1080p. Oh and do the sigmas allow you to use the other frame options? I heard other 3rd party cameras may gray out other options on the EOS R. I'm new to the camera world lol so if I didn't word any of this right I apologize. 😅

  • @tombuck

I would personally choose the 24 1.4 for sure! But It's my favorite lens and I'm really biased. Have you looked at the MetaBones EF-RF speedbooster? It's pricey but seems really good, and takes the 4K crop all the way down to 1.2x. I've watched a lot of videos on it and it seems like a great option. Oh, and I haven't had any issues with Sigma lenses in terms of limiting frame rates or focusing or anything. Good luck! Glad the videos have been helpful!

I'm Sony user and I had Tamron 17-28mm before. Even it was pretty wide for shooting landscape and I mostly I had zoomed it in on 28mm, on other side I liked Sigma when you zoomed out on 14mm and took pictures in nature for example, it gave you that depth/distance between you and what you shoot when you check it on the photo. Some ppl say that 14mm might be for a lot of ppl harder to use than 17mm for example but idk. Wider is better and you can always zoom in. :D

The weight will be a factor (I have a 70-200 lens and if it's even close, it will be a beast to hoist for long periods... but I don't do long periods... I do three dots. ;) ) Plus, I have a Weebill S gimbal that it might work with (I'll have to check around due to the weight) which would solve the stabilization issue. Probably inferior to "L" series for certain pixel peeping pros, but for the everyday photographer/videographer there is no reason in the world this wouldn't be a great addition to your lineup. Great video, thanks for the "ultra-wide" love... I feel they don't get enough

I know you're biased to Canon and Sigma, the Tamron 15-30 2.8 G1 or G2 are good options as well. I had the G1 and liked for being able to use it in 4k in a small room on my eos r. Thanks again for the great content.

@@tombuck Understood. After watching your Canon 16-35 F4 video, I decided to keep the Canon and sell the Tamron due to weight and cost of specialized filters. Now that the RF 16-35 with IS is out, that will be on my wishlist. Can't wait for 3rd party companies to start making RF lenses.

The L-mount "DN" re-designed version is only 1.6lbs ;) Time to switch to the S5 for 3.5lb total! (and use the MC-21 in the meantime ;) )

The 17-55 is a pretty underrated lens. A 24-70 2.8 might fit the bill for what you’re looking for.

Casey Niestat uses 10-22mm lens. Which makes him look like skinny hyperactive guy. And when you see him talking to camera, through someone else's camera, he appears like a Buffy swaying a little bit within small radius. Forget the RF. Gone are the days when Sigma used to make cheap substitutes/average quality lenses, that were focused only on low budget market ajenda. Now their research has reached ultimate heights while keeping the budget part intact. Close your eyes and open them through Sigma Art, you will be happier for lifetime.

Kketansa Art I’m a sigma fanboy. I’ve got 3 lenses, two art series! Love em. But I was talking about Casey Niestats “drug scale” from his DJI mini video which I believe came out on the same day as this one. Just being “funny”
