Mike, Try this trick. Flip up the ladder and slide the slide to the top. Now try using the bottom of the ladder for a sight with the top of the front just peeking out. If it’s useful, file a notch there and file the bottom of the ladder down a little if that helps.

Another excellent video, Mike, thank you. I have to go through this process with my Smith Carbine--I just got a new, intentionally taller sight for it since I intended to do pretty much what you did here (I've seen a previous video where you did this kind of thing), and it's nice to get a refresher on the process.

@larry rodgers I find the Smith system to be *vastly* superior to the Sharps, personally. The leakage is miniscule--far, far better than the Sharps (at least the repro Sharps I've seen)--and you don't need to do anything about it. The Smith has fewer moving parts, so it's easier to clean and there's less to go wrong, and the ammunition is much, much easier to load. Mike's videos are starting to really interest me in the Sharps infantry rifle, but more for the context of its use. I have zero interest in the carbine version because the Smith is just so much better.

I have a 1874 45/ 120 love it good to a 1000 or so back when I still had young eyes still love to make smoke with it anytime the pigs get thick on the home place good luck and keep your powder dry and thank you for all the great videos over the years keep up the good fight

Hope you do a video on adjusting the rear sight! Your videos are so detailed and informative that I always check your KZread page first. I need to do the same with my Pedersoli Sharps Infantry rifle. I'm getting excellent accuracy on nice bright days. But when its a little overcast, or my target is in the shadows (like always at 100y) the rear sight sight is a challenge to use. I'm hoping opening up the sight on one side while zeroing will help me see the rear sight better.

Hey my friend I got my shooting pad to rest my rifle on before and if just went to my truck seat and Barrowed the head rest for a few minutes and then put it back. It worked pretty good. But since then I have been useing my lead shot bags for loading shotgun shells no. 7 half shot bags they really stay in place and I can really get my rifle settled in very well. Oh I have a way to make snake loads useing #12 shot in my walker dragoon 44 cal . I don't no why they call them 44 when they take a 45 cal. Bullet. Well anyway I use a copper cup that goes on bottom of 45 Conicals and a thin vegi wad then I make my paper cartridge like making them for powder and I put #12 shot in it and then a thin wad over the shot . I press it down and then put a copper bullet base that fits real snug and press it firm and lube over it. In my walker dragoon 44 I only use 20 gr. Of loose 777 powder then a 1/8 in dry wad then the copper cup for the bottom of a 45 bullet with cup faceing up then make my paper cartridge and put shot in it a vegetable wad and a copper cup over that and press firm and lube. To load my cylinder I take it out of the pistol frame and use dowel rods to press all in place and reinsert and use the pistol lever press them all the same and lube. These are some awesome snake loads. Some times I only load one or two cylinder holes with them and the rest with conical bullet's.

Hey BIG MIKE, you ol’ “schwabenstuubeler you”! You always bring joy into my life when I watch your videos!! Fine lookin’ “fireschtick” you’re a shootin’ there. A suggestion sir. Anytime you’re shootin’ any gun, PLEASE always show some nice “lusty” shots of the gun & mention at least the caliber & the powder charge. Too, show a closeup of the cartridge. All cartridges have a certain “intrinsic beauty” to them, at least to me anyway! Those great lookin’ Sharps HAMMERS are surely the “muscular bodybuilders” of the gun world!!! I’d love to get one to make a “bolo tie” of! I know the Spencers have great lookin’ hammers too. If using a gun for self defence, what could be more “intimidating” than to see & “HEAR” that big ol’ hammer being cocked!!! Enough to make one loose all their “bodily functions”! I almost lost mine seeing you shoot your big Sharps (almost!)! “Ach du lieber, mein schatz”! Love ya, mein freund!!

i went to the range with my 1874 quigley edition 34 inch barrel, yesturday using 45-70 RTX ammo, shoulder still hurts from that recoil... But i used iron sights at 100 yards and had very tight patterns. But i did it standing up lol.. try that on that heavy gun..

Mine shoots 8"high at 100 yards.

A collector had exact replica of the set of dueling pistols . Have also been enjoying the nutmeg tavern Channel. Have you met the Townsend family ib your many travels

I watched the Burr-Hamilton episode. Frank House was the guy loading the pistols, and Mel Hankla was the collector. I know both of those guys. I met John Townsend at Martin's Station a few years ago.

Those were graphics I made for an article in Muzzleloader Magazine on long range flintlock rifle shooting. I didn't want to make a CW version because regardless of which color I made the uniforms I'd have nasty comments to deal with.

why not use the range formula and a caliper to make the cut? This is good to know because I am in the process of sighting in my carbine, so thanks again Mike,.

Hmm that could be a problem , there's not a Gunsmith in a hundred miles of here .

Have you ever tried shooting it just by loading the bullet and loose powder into the chamber without a paper cartridge? The sharps really interest me and I'm thinking about getting one for our muzzleloader season because they're legal here even though they're technically not muzzleloaders.

I was going to make the same observation. Is it uncomfortable, what would the average expenditure be in battle ? Also how long would it be sustainable for I wonder? That's another aspect that fascinates me about these weapons.

@@paulwooster3590 I wouldn't say it is uncomfortable, but I am pretty recoil-tolerant.

I was curious as to why you loaded the powder charge before swabbing the barrel between shots. I know you had the wads over the powder that kept the powder dry, but nevertheless seemed out of order to me. I shoot a lot of muzzleloaders so I enjoy your channel.

Is that West Shore group in Harrisburg? If so, we are almost neighbors in Lewis and Clark terms.... I have a .357 cowboy gun that makes you aim at the cowboys hat to make center of mass at 25 yards...

Ruger M77s are the best affordable hunting rifles.

Back about 10 to 15 years ago the US Army let out a contract for $5,000/gun to modify old M-14 rifles into sniper rifles. A Remington 700 with scope costs about $550. Wouldn't it have been better and much cheaper to buy some Rem 700s than to modify old M-14s. I realize that the Army goes insane about matching ammo, but snipers use very little ammo, so that should have been no problem. The Remington 700 was the standard sniper rifle in Vietnam. The whole thing sounds like another District of Corruption pork-barrel project. ( The guy zeroing in his 700 reminded me of this)

The M21s were never intended to be true "sniper rifles." They were more like designated marksman rifles in practice, being semi-automatic, reasonably accurate, and firing a more powerful cartridge than the M16/M4. It also should be noted that the US military does actually use a Remington 700-based sniper rifle called the M24, and it costs significantly more than some off-the-shelf $500 peice of junk Rem 700 Uncle Jimbo bought to hunt deer.

Mike, thanks for answering my previous comment on lead hardness. What lube are you using and where did you live in Vermont. I live in a small town in Vermont not far from the Connecticut River.

I lived in Alburg, VT. For lube I use a mixture of 2/3rds lambs tallow, 1/3rd beeswax

One of these days I’m gonna find a range with six hundred plus yards to see how good my cavalry carbine is…

I was looking at buying one but I was told by a fellow who has one he had to send it off to Bobby Hoyt because he couldn't get it to group. I know about the Italian rifled musket rifling and had two relined by Bobby Holt. Have you experienced this with the Sharps 1859.

I love my shilo quiggly model but would really love to start hand loading it with light loads instead of bp loads what would you recommend my lee Manuel is a bit too modern for the good loads

Wonderful video. Can anyone give me some insight on calibrating the ladder sight? Once he files 100 yards to true why can he then simply trust the upper rungs? Thank you for your help.

After I file a true 100 yard rear sight, the markings on the ladder will be meaningless except as reference points. I'll have to find the correct position on the ladder by experimenting on the range.

Thanks for the video I am working with my rifle right now to see what works best . I am using the 490 grain ring-tailed bullet with varying amounts of FFG powder . Do you know how the front sight is attached to these guns? My guess is solder ? Also if you find my comment what is your load ,UTUBE is full of ideas and powder charges as low as 30 grains under a Lee R.E.A.L. .54 caliber muzzle loading bullet . My gun (S. Armi ) with lubed 490 grain bullet seated will hold 100 grain FFG in the chamber which gives the 1200 f/s claimed in some older reference material on these guns in .52 caliber. A previous owner also drilled the tang for a tang sight and I do have one that fits the original front sight is about useless with the tang sight ,like you I am looking at modification or perhaps replacement of front sight.

Sighting in a military rifle, for those of us who shoot Mosin Nagants, we know about aiming low to hit something. Really bad when you shoot a Carcano from WWII.

@@mrmicro22 they should hit on at 100 yards and the sight set to 100 on the mosin 91/30 :)

With the battle sight zero your also accommodating near zeroes as well. For example getting a 25 yard zero will allow your bullet to rise up at 100 yards roughly 3-5 inches depends on caliber, and roughly be on target at 300. Hence calling it the battlefield zero 25/300 or a combat zero. The same is for 200 for a 200 yard zero would be the same for a 50 yard zero so a 50/200 zero is a very flat shooting which is best for hunting. At 100 yards you would be an inch to maybe 2 inches high. Then there is the 36 yard zero which brings you about 2 inches low at 100 but relatively flat from 0 to 200 yards which is ideal for red dot sights.

Mike .... is the only difference between a Colt 1851 Navy and a Colt 1862 POCKET Navy ... the length of the barrel ... thanks ... Mike

Before. But I'm just oing with the service load. NSSA guys tell me these guns group best with 40 to 45 grains.

I have a carbine and similarly put a taller front sight on the Sharps. I now have it dead on at 50 yards using the ladder in the lowered position. I am now trying to figure out the 100 yard sight using the raised latter . Do you have any thoughts on this ?

Raise the slider up out of the way and use the base of the ladder.

@@duelist1954 thanks … I will give that a try . I tried using the lowered ladder ( my 50 yard setting) and aimed at the top of an 18 x 12 Target and hit a few inches below the bullseye . It’s confusing with out a friend to spot because of all the BP smoke if you don’t hit paper. It took a while to dial in 50 what with finding the right powder charge etc so I’m sure this will come along. I have a basic tang sight that’s easy to install/remove that I was hoping to use for 100 so I just have to keep working at it. Hitting the 50 yard bullseye one shot after another is certainly satisfying with the 1859 . Can’t wait for similar results at the 100 yard mark. Thanks again for your great videos and education.
