Short video on how to read and adjust a vernier scale sight.
I hope I explained correctly that this sight is not outputting true MOA. It's just a number. and based on your sight radius it may be more or less than a MOA.
And a correction for the windage. on this sight. Each graduation on the drum is 1/2 of the movement of the staff. so if your sigt radius equaled true MOA then each graduation on the drum would be 1/2 MOA or 2.5 MOA per rev.

Thank you. Yeah it's an archaic system and the only reason I'm decent with it was trade school in 1990
Currently reading blood meridian by Cormac McCarthy, mentions a venier sighted rifle and as a canadian who's unfamiliar with firearms this is very fascinating. Thanks for explaining it easy, cheers.
Outstanding explanation. I've struggled mightily with understanding how to read a vernier scale, and now, not only can I read my sights, I can also read the Starret and B&S calipers, micrometers, and indicators I inherited from my father instead of all the digital stuff I've been using up to this point. Thanks a lot, I really appreciate this!

Nice clear video, partner...kudos! I have a Pedersoli Quigley model with 34 inch barrel, and the adjustments are as close to MOA as makes no difference with that long sight radius. I've been able to use data from the Strelok Pro ballistic calculator to get first-round hits out to 700 yards. (It'd probably work out farther, but I haven't tried it.)

I’m attempting to learn how to use the vernier scale on my rifle. My 1874 Pedersoli Sharps in 45-70 has a 30 inch barrel and a 34 inch sight radius. My 100 yd zero is at 82 moa on my Pedersoli vernier (the ier at the end is pronounced) scale. There has to be a way of estimating the vernier settings for 200, 300, 400, 500 etc. etc. without randomly launching a whole bunch of bullets down range until you hit something (a steel plate for instance) and then right down the vernier setting for each distance. Can you tell me how to accomplish that? Thanks

Actually the only way is to plug your data into a ballistic solver then add the elevation to the zero and correct for the true moa. One of the best ones to use is JBM ballistics www.jbmballistics.com/cgi-bin/jbmtraj-5.1.cgi. You'd need to know the BC of the bullet and the velocity along with atmospheric conditions and even then it's only close due to how slow the bullet is going and how bad the BC is on our bullets. the ballistic solvers are designed for supersonic low drag bullets. they don't do very well calculation wise with the watermelon shaped bullets we use I'll let you know too. no one that is serious about shooting these rifle at distance uses the Pedersoli sight. Sell that sight and buy an MVA if you want predictable repeatable adjustments.

@@kcstott Thanks for taking the time to reply and for the sight advice. I’ve used ballistic calculators before (not the one you suggested) but only for commercial smokeless ammo and riflescopes. The databases/ammo box tells you the BC of the ammo you’re using. I have a crono for the velocity but how can I determine the BC of the lead launchers I’m using - Montana 535 gr Lyman Postell?

So I opened up the JBM Calculator and plugged in as much as I could, including a fudged BC of .295 based on a Hornady 45 caliber .458 500 grain bullet. That gives me a MOA drop of -28.0 at 300 yds and -62.0 at 500 yds. So I figure if I add these to my 100 yd zero of 82, that should get me in the ballpark for the moa elevation on my vernier sight, namely 110 and 144. Does that make sense? Would still like to know how to get a true BC for any of the cast bullets I'm using. Thanks again.

@@dogbone1358 Btw I forgot to mention that your rifle's elevation is very close to 1 moa per .010" of sight movement. If your sight is based on a MVA where one line = .010" then it's exceptionally close to 1 moa at range @ 1000 yards if my math is correct you will be with in 5/8" of perfect. As per the MVA sight. I'd recommend a long range sight. either a #103 Buffalo Soule sight at the high end or if you don't need huge amount of wind adjustment the #107. I'm recommending long range sights since you said your 100 yard zero was 82 MOA. I'd wager your base is ver low and may not be mounted to best suit a tang sight. This is where a call to MVA would be your best bet. they can answer all your questions. As to how to figure out BC. That would require shooting over doppler radar. Best source I can find to predict a BC is www.tmtpages.com/calcbc/calcbc.htm#casts. Your postal should be a G1 of 500 or better. and if you are shooting around 1200 to 1300 FPS your 300 yard drop should be around 20 moa and your 500 yard drop should be around 50 moa. I'm shooting a Buffalo Arms 545 Money bullets .446" patched to .450" and have a working BC of 571 G1

and every rifle is different due to bullet weight, shape, load barrel length and sight radius.
