Evan speculates about the origin of an elaborately embellished Civil War firearm and compares it to a standard version.

I had a good friend who was a gunsmith for many years. I often saw guns in his shop that were modified, butchered and altered in horrible ways. I many times asked him, "who in the hell would do that to a gun"?! He would say, "I'm never surprised by what I see, that comes into the shop!" I guess people just do crazy stuff sometimes! Someone sure went to a lot of work and expense embellishing that Sharps! The forearm seems funny though, it doesn't really match the buttstock. It might jus tbe the camera that makes it look different. Thanks for the show Evan.

Thanks! I occasionally get lucky if I spend enough time on the internet and in our reference library. I also have great help from the State Archives staff.

Prime specimens, Evan. Perhaps additional information will come to light and aid you in solving the mystery of the highly embellished 1863 Sharps carbine. 👍

We have contacted the New York French Consulate to ask of R. A. LaLancette was employed there in 1870. We have received no response yet. I'm hoping to figure out some other way to determine that. Considered asking the Consulate in Paris, or maybe ask the American ambassador there to make an inquiry. Probably not high on the list of priorities for anyone but me. There is a Fleur de Lis carved on the bottom of the forend, further clues to a French connection.

Brother, you need to keep your head down. I'd be very upset if something bad happened to you. I'm doing great these days. Not many drive bys in Cheyenne although there was one a few months ago, young woman was killed.
