What an amazing amount of solid information in a 13 minute video! If I'm ever down south, I'd love to visit the museum.

I own a Burnside Spencer Carbine in the 18k range, which dates to about July 1865. It is chambered in 56-50 ammunition, which is hard to find unless you load your own. It’s one of 30,500 made by Burnside Rifle Co. Mine has the Stabler Cutoff.

Should have mentioned the Stabler cutoff for single shot operation. Also has a cleaning rod than factory Spencers don't have.

Great video, thanks for taking the time on it. I would add on that there's a few cartridges missing on that US military cartridge display. 7.62x51/.308, .30-40 krag, .50-70. I've heard there was a .30-03 as well but I don't know if it's much different than the .30-06.

No, I disagree. If you have more firepower you will need less men to guard your supply train. Most of the time supply trains were attacked by calvary which had 3 or 4 revolvers. If they had the firepower, it would have put them on more equal terms. I mean that respectfully. That said, the desk top soldiers decided that copper was a cheaper round than brass. How did that work out for Custer? Another example is the M-16, they decided to take the chrome out of the receivers which caused them to jam. Desk top soldiers have got a lot of people killed over the yrs. I enjoy these videos, Good Job

Thanks for the comment. Probably would have been a good idea to arm the troops protecting the supply trains with repeating firearms. And I agree that a lot of bad decisions are made by desk jockeys who have never been in the field.

Surprisingly, you left out the "other" cartridge that was seemingly the "first" metallic cartridge adopted by the US military, the 50-70 The US military then adopted the 45-70...

Your are correct about the Allin conversion of existing Civil War muzzle loading rifles to "trapdoor" configuration. Thank you for this update.

We place a heavy emphasis on safety for viewers who may not familiar with firearms. Standard procedure is to treat all firearms as if they were loaded, and to check for an empty chamber every time the firearm is handled. Some of the guns in the collection are in fact loaded and cannot be safely unloaded. Usually this is a percussion firearm. Such guns are "red tagged" so that everyone observes additional caution when handling them.

The Spencer rifle US Model 1860 was fed a 56-56, not a 56-50. I quit looking at 09:38 - really, all weapons off the table due to security when there is live ammo on the table? Afraid some brass would go flying into a chamber and self detonate? Doing it is ok enough, poiting it out is just plain silly. C'mon man!

As noted in the reply above, not all Firearms Friday viewers are familiar with gun safety procedures so we take extra steps to focus on correct firearms handling. As a certified NRA Instructor, we stress in our classes that ammunition should not be present when firearms are cleaned or when dry firing. Of course no ammunition has a mind of its own. I wonder how many people have been killed over the years by "unloaded" firearms? Had an acquaintance shoot himself in the leg with a Glock because he racked the slide before he removed the magazine and then pulled the trigger as part of the disassembly procedure. So what seems silly to you may not to those with less firearm experience.
