SIGG FireJet Stove to Primus Hose Adapter

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The SIGG FireJet is a vintage multi-fuel stove designed to burn Coleman fuel (aka naphtha) or K-1 clear, undyed kerosene. Here's how to make an adapter for the SIGG FireJet stove to mate with a Primus Omnifuel Ergopump hose. With the adapter you or your machinist friend makes, you can use a more durable modern pump and also pickup the ability to use isobutane gas canisters. In the video, I demonstrate using the mini-lathe to machine the brass, but the threads are cut with the lathe non-powered; I'm just using the lathe to hold everything super-accurate while cutting those tiny itty-bitty threads - hand-powered.
You are welcome to use the video and the data I provide to make your one of own or have the machinist friend in your life make one for you.
The SIGG thread is a M8x1.00 thread.
For the Primus Omnifuel and Ergopump, use a M8x0.5 thread.
If you wanted to use the Optimus Polaris Optifuel or Nova hose and pump set instead of the Primus pump and hose set, you would change the M8 x 0.5 Primus thread to M8 x 0.75 for the Polaris or Nova.
You can order the specialty taps and dies I use from Victor Machinery:

The brass hex is 7/16" brass hex obtained from Online Metals:

The o-ring size is -007, or, a better description:
AS568-007 BV75 Brown FKM (Viton, Fluorocarbon) 75 Duro

I'm a big proponent of Occums Law, the simplest way is the best way. That is why I have stuck with the stoves like the Seva 123 and the Optimus 00 and its big brothers. I get to camp pull out the stove and I'm ready to boil water. Every evening I top off the tank and I'm ready for the next morning or an emergency on the road or trail . I'm heating water in minutes. The size of fuel bottle I carry will depend on the length of the trip.

@tomsitzman3952 I, too, have fond regard for the Svea 123 and Svea 123R stoves. Just take a look at my many other videos all about how to use and repair the Sveas. But, many people prefer a lighter stove solution. The video you are commenting on has little to do with Sveas but more about how clever and talented fabricators can keep old vintage stoves like the SIGG FireJet running. BD

Pretty neat stove BernieDawg. It was interesting to watch you build the adapter to fit the Sigg.

Hi! Great job! Just as an additional Info, the wire cable mentioned was designed for cleaning the pipe.

@Michael Klees Thanks! Let's be accurate, though, please. While the cable in the vaporization tube is commonly used to clean the tube of gunk when using poor quality fuels such as kerosene or automobile gasoline, its use as a scrubbing cleaning tool is not its "designed" purpose. The cable is there to promote vaporization of the fuel and to restrict the fuel path to prevent surging and pulsing of the stove. Cleaning is completely secondary to the other functions. And, if you use clean-burning naphtha fuels (aka Coleman fuel), you’ll not have the fouling that requires using the cable to scrub out poor-quality-fuel residues. Try it and see. 👍😎 BD

Hi Bernie, could you not have sourced a primus fuel hose 721360 (used for the early multifuel stove and easy fuel). This has an extra long shaft by the connection, to allow for the cleaning wire and terminates in an M8 connection? BTW I'm glad you didn't, because I very much enjoyed your lathe work and videos. Thank you.

@Nicholas Cramer Hi Nick Thanks for your question. Pretty sure the 721360 hose, the early multifuel stove, and the Easyfuel stove all use a M8x0.5 thread for the hose to stove connection - just like the Omnifuel. (Primus uses M8x0.50, Optimus uses M8x0.75, SIGG used M8x1.00) So, yeah, I could have used the 721360, but you would still need the adapter to connect the M8x0.5 thread of the Primus hose to the M8x1.00 thread of the SIGG fuel feed pipe. Plus, consider... the Ergopump hose is made today, whereas the 721360 hose is leftover stock from stoves discontinued ten+ years ago. Which do *you* suppose would have more flexible seals and a longer life? 🤔😉👍 BD

Wouldn't it have been a possibility to braze the two together? I would think that brazing would be able to hold up to the temperatures. Like the vid and fabrication though

  • @BernieDawgCinema

    @BernieDawgCinema

@Antonio M. Andersen Sure. Absolutely! Brazing the adapter on would be completely doable. You wouldn't even need to cut the threads on the stove side - just have a snug slip fit. Lots easier, too. Could even shorten the vapor tube to allow the stove to fold again. BUT!! These stoves bring a lot of money at auction to stove collectors. Doing a one-way adaptation with brazing would make the stove pretty well worthless to any collectors. Most sensible people don't want to throw the money away by brazing when the threaded method works fine, and allows for the stoves eventual resale at full price. Think about it... you don't actually OWN these (or anything else for that matter) since it'll pass on to someone else when you die. How you choose to be the custodian of it for the very short and limited time while it's in your hands is up to you. BD

@@BernieDawgCinema True indeed. However I wasn't aware that it was a collectable stove but I guess they all are when enough time has passed 🙂. Anyway when the purpose is to keep it as original as possible I better understand the decision to do it with threads than to braze it and that the customer is happy is all that matters, was a nice way you did it for sure 👌

All specifications are in the description box below the video. Contact a hobby or professional machinist in your neighborhood to have him or her make one for you. I no longer make these, but my video shows you or your machinist how to do so. Feel free to make and sell them on eBay by the thousands. Easy! 👍 😎 BD
