Ice accumulation from freezing spray is exactly what ended up sinking F/V Destination. It's easy to see why Sig is freaking out the way he is.

Our family friend went down with the boat he was on due to that. They had loaded up with crab and were on the way back with a full hold when the pots iced up. There was so much weight with everything the boat tipped and went down with all hands. It happened before I was born or when I was really little and it's a common story. Always make sure to visit the terminal in Seattle every so often to pay respects to the memorial. More names added every year.

@@Elnalgon_18 NTSB and Coast Guard investigated the sinking, that was their finding. And it's a known fact in bad conditions with freezing spray that it can add over 4000 pounds every 15 minutes. It's brought down a lot of ships. She sunk because she had an estimated 340,000 pounds of extra weight on her, aka ICE. It doesn't usually effect much larger ships, the smaller ships such as fishing boats are very susceptible to it.

She's such a tough girl and wants to make her dad proud. But the whole dynamics have changed when she had her baby. I was scared for a minute that she'd refuse to leave, but so glad she thought about her child and Sailor's future and how it's more important to stay around for her daughter. Money is not everything and I'm so glad Sig and his family realize that. The boat will still fish and the crew will get paid. I pray she continues to understand how important it is to put her child first. Mandy stop being so prideful and macho just to prove a point. I know you and Clark need to provide for your family, but your mom and dad will never let you and your family do without. Listen to your dad's wisdom and be grateful he loves you and that baby so much.

He can't be as effective as a captain/fisherman if he is distracted and making decisions as a father. I think as Sig has gotten older, he's coming to realize even more than he already does, just how easily families can be devastated should something happen on the Bering Sea. If the Northwestern happened to go down, somehow, with Sig, Mandy, her husband, and Edgar/Norman onboard, that'd wipe out most of the Hansen family in one go and one of the few remaining members would have to grow up telling people why half their family just all died one day.

I really like and respect Sig Hansen. He has seen some terrible things happen out there, and for him to take the time and spend the money to send his baby girl home is just so selfless and caring. He's going to have one less relief captain with her gone, and they are going into some ruthless seas on this trip out, so he is really taking the weight on his shoulders to protect her. This particular clip has made me really respect that man. Sig is the best captain on the Bering Sea, without a doubt. Not because of all the crab he catches (and he for sure gets the crab), but because of his ability to respond to every situation he faces with well thought out decisions.

When Sig woke up and saw how quickly the ice was accumulating on the boat with all the pots still on the boat he was scared especially at 3:14…. I’ve never seen that look in sigs eyes before… And it takes Alot to scare capt sig Hansen!! He definitely made the right call… I can’t imagine the stress he goes thru in situations like this, as for all crab boat captains fishing on the bearing sea, but especially when the ice starts accumulating on the boat with full stack of crab pots on the boat….

That was sheer foolishness having them BOTH on the same trip. Tell them 1 or the other. Not both. 1 HAS to go the hell home to their child.
