Smilodon certainly didn't have more bite power than a tiger. In the documentary Prehistoric Hunters, they compared the bite force of Smilodon and the African lion, and the African lion had several times more power in its jaws. The smilodon's skull was not built for the force exerted by the lion when biting, and it would have been blown apart.

I think I watched that documentary too, they couldn’t bite down hard or shake their prey in their jaws. If they did their k9s would shatter. They also didn’t have any change of direction because of the stubbed tail.

There is a lot of speculation as to how the Sabre toothed cats, used their canines, and against which prey they may have been employed. It makes no sense that they would have been used on smaller prey, so we must assume that they had a design specifically for larger prey animals. Bite force isn't necessarily a determining factor in a fight, when one animal is more robust and muscular, in comparison to the other. A modern large cat may be able to bite harder, but they would be doing it with much smaller teeth. One stab by much larger teeth, is causing wounds that will lead to extensive blood loss and weakness in the prey animal. A Smilodon, would be much more powerful than a modern large cat. It would pin it, bite it once, and wait for it to bleed out!

  • @overeasymode

The Smilodon didn't rely on a strong bite force. It fact it's weaker compared to today's big cats. It's weapons was it's immense forearms which subdues their prey. The teeth were used to puncture and cause tremendous blood lose. But the teeth has a weakness in that the side walls were fragile and weak. So it was very careful with it's bite.

Everything I've read about smilodon stated that the canines were fragile. The killing method was to rip open the throat. The forelimbs and shoulders were large enough to hold down larger prey. Large felines attack larger prey in a similar fashion by suffocation today right down to puma today!

@@markmccarty9793 I think they would have been aware how fragile their teeth were. I see a more defensive animal that act more timid and protective. Fun fact: The largest wild tiger ever recorded was not a Siberian tiger, but a Bengal Tiger shot by a hunter in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh in the 60s. The tiger weighed whopping 390 kilograms. These days, wild Bengal Tigers tend to be larger than the Siberian Tigers because Siberian Tigers have shrunken in size due to loss of prey. Smilodon (assuming we’re talking about the biggest of the 3 sub species) was larger than a Siberian Tiger. Infact it was about the largest feline that’s ever existed. However, what potentially swings this, are it’s enormous canines. While very useful at delivering a killer bite vs prey, they were practically useless against other apex predators. As a result of this, anything which could stand up to it and fight at close quarters, as a Siberian Tiger could, would have very good chance. That said, this is very hard to call and could certainly go either way.

I think you're right in the first instance. A smilodon would be very vulnerable. The Tiger is very, very fast and agile and would not be waiting for smilodon to open wide. Smilodon would have a major advantage though. If it got a hold of the tiger it would basically have it squeezed and locked up and would take all the time it needed to open wide. Pure brawn and strength. I think they got up to 1200 pounds but most were in the 800 to 1000 pound range for the biggest species.

Smilodon Populator or Fatalis straight-up bodies Siberian Tigers. Fatalis was 900 pounds while Populator was even bigger at a full half-ton. Both Sabercats could fight adult mammoths in a group of 3. Even a pair of Tigers would rarely attack an Elephant. Sabercats also often attacked their prey with skull bites to pierce the eyes. Yes, they hunted humans. Indicating they knew how to identify weaknesses and how to exploit them. So, with equal intelligence and superior size and strength, there are no advantages left for the modern Tiger.

Pointing out mistakes: - First of all they aren't rivals, never were. Smilodon did not co-exist with any tiger. - Here you are comparing a population/subspecies against an entire genus. S. populator beats Siberian tiger. S. fatalis will be closer but confidently I'd say, fatalis will win. S. gracilis loses though. Here, you focused on fatalis. - Smilodon bite isn't as powerful as a tiger bite. The pressure is probably lower, and weaker canines. However it makes for a much deadlier bite with its knife-like fangs. - Siberian tigers are smaller than S. fatalis, weighing an average of 190-200 kgs, and the largest specimen was 270 kgs. (All reliable records). Meanwhile the Fatalis was ~220-230 kgs on average (species level? specimens although unwise to calculate average for long-gone animals). S. fatalis maxed over 300 kgs in reality, the 280 kgs has been surpassed now. Some going as far as 342 kgs although this I doubt. - Smilodon fatalis and populator, were bulkier than any pantherine.

It's fair to say this fight was more based on theory and hypothesis rather than practicality, mainly because not much is known about the extinct Smilodon. Would we know how fast they are simply by looking at them? or whether their bite force was stronger, simply by guessing so, or whether they were stronger because the prey species in the past were bigger? The only reason they succeeded in hunting those prey was because they worked in hunting groups. This video was more of a what if scenario rather than a definite fact.

I’d say cougar wins. Me Bornean Orangutans are gigantic, heavy, strong, loud, and masters at traversing through the forest. But if a cougar could get close enough for an assault, I’d say there’s little to no chance than an orangutan could escape if it gets attacked. It’s best bet would be to use its size and weight to fend it off before it gets too badly hurt

It entirely depends on the species of smilodons. The siberian tiger might be able to take down the smaller species of smilodon in a fight but the larger species like the S.populator and S.Fatalis would destroy any modern day bigcat in a fight as they are reasonably stronger, more robust and possess stronger, thicker, denser skeletons than modern day bigcats. Smilidons in general would have a much more damaging bite due to their long sabers, which is much longer and several times bigger than canines of Tigers or lions. Once the Smilodon wrestles down the tiger and physically overpowers it, which is very likely, the Saber toothed cat will inflict serious damage with those fangs and will definitely kill the tiger.

I think it would be a close fight between the Siberian Tiger and the Smilodon. In captivity it would be a close fight and it would depend of circumstances. Depending on who’s cage the invader would be crossing, the Siberian Tiger would more than likely be fighting for his life and relying on quick blows with it’s claws and retreating to avoid getting its neck punctured by the smilodon. The Smilodon would win if it was able to grip the tiger by it’s back and bite into it’s neck, while taking the quick blows by the tiger, with its long talon teeth and then again rip into it’s diaphragm area and let it bleed out. It is possible that the tiger would win if it was able to get to the neck of the smilodon and rip into into its torso. It would wound it and be able to kill it. I would also have to add that putting these two animals into a cage together would be very cruel. Out in the wild I think these two animals would avoid each other. Again, tigers aren’t going to kill another animal of equal size unless they know they can win. Unless the tiger were to get ambushed while it’s eating the carcass of the deer by the smilodon. It might put up a fight against it.

Tiger wrecks shop due to it having incredible durability, agility, and still being alive. I don't see smilodon being able to even use its mouth in this fight because of how unwieldy it is against something as shifty and quick as a tiger. There's a big difference in taking down a herbivore designed for grazing in open areas and a tiger which sneaks through the jungle to kill prey that is significantly smarter and more evolved than the prey smilodon used to hunt. Ive worked hands on with a white Bengal and two Siberian tigers and they are capable of some insane feats of agility and quickness that smilodon just wasn't likely to be capable of.

Smilodon cats have something missing in them and that is the result for their extinction. Only forearm strength and canine use for puncturing and blood loss will not take you far enough if your preys will also evolve. If you are slow in chasing, you will not be an effective hunter. Siberian tiger's will simply stand in its powerful hind legs and will use quick 2/3 swipes. Razor sharp retractable claws will mess the Sabertooth's face.

I don't know...... this is a tough one. However, even though I would love to give it toothed Siberian tiger. I just don't see how it could stand against a prehistoric monster that hunted insanely large prey. One would assume that its skin would be insanely thick to withstand injury from the counterattacks it would have had to defend against while hunting. In just don't see the average tiger winning a battle against these beasts. Its thick muscular structure and skin would negate a lot of the tiger's attacks. And it should be much much larger. Siberian Tigers could probably kill the teenage Smileodons, but definitely not Alpha Smileodons. Otherwise, they'd be extinct, too, because they would have been too formidable for today's environment.

Smilodon likely only used its fangs to kill. It didn't fight with them. So, when you really look at it, the tiger seems to have much more tools at it's disposal. Longer, sharper claws, heavier yet faster, more agile & flexible, the ability to fight while standing, and the use of it's fangs as weapons. Smilodon may have been stronger and sturdier, sure, but it was yesterday's model for a reason. The tiger is simply more evolved imo.

On the surface, the two big dagger-like fangs on a smilodon may look impressive but in a fight agility is very important. The tiger is faster and has a stronger bite force. It's not going to give the smilodon the time to sink its fangs into it. It will use its agility to out-maneuver the smilodon and wrestle it down with its own powerful forelegs and go for the kill with its more powerful bite force. Tigers have a unique way of subduing their prey. There's a reason why humans are imitating a tiger's fight style.
