In the famous Rancho la Brea fossil site (that in pleistocene was a tar pit that trapped lot of animals) lions skeletons were scarce respect other animals like smilodon, dire wolves or jaguars. Lions were the most widespread predators on earth just heeled by another rival big feline, the mighty scimitar tooth cat Homotherium

Nice Theory, i on the other Side suspect, that the Nemean Lion could have been a Crossbreed. Back then there were Lions also as Tigers, that could have been mated. We know from the Lion, they lived in Greece and former Yugoslavia, also Tigers were found in Turkey. So the Nemean Lion could have been a Liger. Ligers are the biggest Cats ever roamed this Planet, not fertile, very docile, but still a huge Cat! There are Videos here on KZread of living oones.

Civilisations - Kebaran in the Levante. Arctic Eurasians and Inuits have been found to be 20 thousand years or so old, then the Khoisanids in central Africa around the same time. Even the Sumerians are 6 thousand years old at minimum. There are also things that show you like Gobleki Tepe and surrounding monuments that are carbon dated to be from earliest to oldest 7/8 thousand years to 11-12 thousand years. Archaeologists think it was more of a settlement than a place of worship based on the sheer size of it all. But animals being carved into pillars, pillars that are perfectly placed with mathematics and astrology. They had intimate knowledge of the constellations. These aren't done by hunter gatherers, they are done by civilised people. In order to learn maths, astrology, engineering and logistics you first need to have a steady food source. Only once you stop "surviving" can you turn your hands to anything else, the stopping of survival coincides with civilisations. But bare in mind, we had the younger dryas 12/13 thousand years ago so a lot is still lost.

Lol, Nope. They went extinct due to several factors including the disappearance of large prey species in their habitats, climatic upheaval, and human activities. If the African continent had suffered the same catastrophic loss of Megafauna as other continents during the Late Pleistocene extinction, African lions would have gone extinct long ago. Take Madagascar for example, the larger lemurs and elephant birds went extinct due to human overhunting, and the big carnivores (Giant Fossa and the Voay went extinct immediately after) Lions and Tigers are too big and powerful and not as easily adaptable as leopards. They would die out if big prey became absent.

@Jenvlogs404, nope, the indian lion is a subspecies of lion, the cave lion is not a lion and is therefore a separate species that is only distantly related to the lion, the cave lion belongs to the genus Uncia along with the tiger and ounce, while the lion belongs to the genus Panthera, where the leopard is one of its two extant members.

The greatest band of Lion brothers that ever existed are the Mapogo brothers. Legendary 6 Male Lions from the South African region, their reign was from 2005 through 2012. They lived a life of war and survival for years, they conquered a massive area never before seen. Killing many rivals along the way and taking control of nearly a dozen prides of Females. These guys are truly Legendary.

@GO-wb1gf Quite the contrary, they were efficient sires. They lost 5 Sub Adult sons from the Sand River pride due to getting shot by the warden's rifles. The lost another separate batch of cubs when the Mother died. Then you have a whole other batch of cubs from a different pride that died because of the heavy floods within the Sabi Sands. Then, when one of the brothers returned to the Western side of their territory ended up killing some cubs due to him not recognizing them from being away for 2 years. He would kill the cubs when the other Mapogos weren't around. These incidents are out of their control. I would say they had terrible luck realistically. All in all 9 of their offspring made it to adulthood, 2 prides of Females directly from 7 of their daughters are thriving today.

American lions weren't actually lions just like how sabertooth tigers weren't tigers. Mosbach lions are actually the largest lions subspecies that have ever walked the earth and it rivaled the American lion and sabertooth cats in size and strength. Natodomeri lions should have been on the list too because they were the 2nd largest lion subspecies after the mosbach lion.
