Yay, another Stationeers playthrough with Splitsie! Venus is a bold choice, looking forward to shenanians About the unrealistic existence of coal in stationeers, there are mods that remove coal, but they make the game a lot more challenging, as you have to convert biomass into carbon as substitute for coal. Even Mars without ice and coal is pretty hard for me, at least...

  • @KaedysKor

Personally, I like this approach of treating it as "generic hydrocarbon" rather than specifically coal. They already hand-waved that with volatiles (which are _sorta_ hydrogen, and called "hydrogen" in some legacy sections of the code/config, but not actually hydrogen in some very notable ways, such as having a _massively_ higher condensation point and producing pollutants when combusted with oxygen) and pollutants, neither of which are directly mapped to any actual specific real-world substance to allow them more creative freedom with defining the physical constants of those materials. Notable, the fact that "coal" produces pollutants when combusted means it is definitely not a pure hydrocarbon, since pollutants are expected to contain chlorine, sulfur, or similar.

Unfortunately Stationeers doesn't really model that too well. We may be adhering to the ideal gas law , PV = nRT , but the way the model works is nothing we do can directly impact the pressure without impacting anything else. We can heat up or cool a gas through heaters or heat exchangers and that will affect pressure. We can add or remove volume with pipes, in-line tanks, and tanks. We can add or remove molar quantities of gases through our various pumps and vents. The closest thing we get to "compression" is by making condensation phase change occur, same with "expansion" with evaporation. Venus then adds another issue with phase change devices in that nothing we have will have a max liquid temp higher than Venus's ambient temperature. Even sublimation doesnt technically work well in that vacuums in game have essentially 0K temperatures so no ices melt unless lit by sunlight or you introduce some atmospheric gases above the freezing point of ices.

The funniest part was always finding water and hydrogen ice just lying around on the ground :D And smaller containers are a lot tougher than big ones (all else equal); and if they are _full_ of water, they're not going to implode or explode - you'd just need to make sure to fill them with something that can hold against the pressure rather than just standard pressure air. The point of playing Venus is to enjoy new challenges anyway. It wasn't even an official environment originally, was it? And it's getting more interesting with every update.

Floating cities on top of the thick atmosphere in the layer that has pressure comparable to Earth and might even have air that does not kill you in seconds. This way you can watch the hellhole that is the surface of Venus where the pressure that will crush you LONG before you hit the ground, if the acidic air does not melt you first among other things, out of the comfort of your home in the sky. Another suggestion, aim to keep the atmospheric in/out valve, in case unwanted gases build up in the heat/gas recicle loop. With gold as an example it seems some ores release some gas during smelting. Perhaps long term, an upgrade could be to filter and keep the useful ones.

  • @KaedysKor

    @KaedysKor

    10 күн бұрын

@@voidphilosopher42 All ores release gases during smelting. Gold is just unique in that it releases some oxygen (the only other "ore" that does so is oxite ice), which can auto-ignite in the presence of volatiles given sufficient temperature. This can be exceedingly notable on Vulcan, since the surface temperature of Vulcan during the day is sufficient to auto-ignite oxygen in the presence of the volatiles in the atmosphere (only requires ~300C), so smelting gold in an arc furnace during the day can be...explosive. Silver and lead can have similar effects due to releasing NOS (which only requires ~50C to auto-ignite with volatiles).

Im watching this and thinking, why not make a shut off behind the pump, and off gassing pipe. All you would need is to move the inlet valve to behind the T connector, so you could maintain pressure as heat increases. It would basically work lije a heat pumo as you intend, as long as you don't exceed pressure ratings. But tgat could also be dealt with through using pressure chambers or other means you have understanding of. Have a semiclosed system that constantly moves the gas and heats it and can still be off gassed if needed.

I'm 1:35:50 in, and I'm wondering at this point if you've considered not only drawing in external temp for the furnace to heat that chamber, but also using it to dump heat from the main chamber, which is at this point still an issue? Just curious, cos it seems you're focusing on bringing heat in (brilliant idea BTW), but have forgotten (or just not mentioned) the issue with cooling internal space. [EDIT @ 2:19:18] I only just realized you're 0 temp in vacuum in there, so ignore question above Also curious why you put the furnace and generator outside on blocks - or rather why you kept them there instead of rejigging the assemblage to ground level when the solar panel became superfluous? Another question: If you can create a heat exchanger to heat gas, does the game have a way to create one to heat water/fluids? Enough to run a turbine for power generation? Also, they invented cloning, but they haven't figured out a way to add a drinking tube inside suit helmets connected to an external water bottle??

@@Flipsie Another thing that's strongly recommended for Venus, for the next time around, is swapping your oxygen and waste tanks and rebreathing the waste gases when your waste tank gets full. Most of the gas cycling on Venus is due to suit cooling, not oxygen depletion, so swapping your waste tank with your oxygen tank lets you consume a lot more of that oxygen. It's also something that can be done instantly, helping immensely with "oh no my waste tank is full" or "oh no my oxygen tank is empty" moments. And then when you do need to vent it, doing it in an enclosed space (ideally vacuumed out, so your waste tank doesn't acquire pollutants) where you can capture and retain the gases (including the remaining oxygen) for later use. The lack of ices means traders are likely the only option early on for more oxygen, so conserving what you have until you can access traders is rather critical.

Jumping straight to Venus after a Mars playthrough in Stationeers _and_ a hiatus ... Splitsie, you mad lad! Thus far I've seen ~45mins and I'll catch the rest later. For now, some armchair 'pathology' on the first fatality: I'd suspect lung damage when suit damaged digging under the lander. Lung damage exacerbated by emptying waste tank, resulting in enough hot gas being ingested to waste tank to further damage lungs. -> Mitigation: Build airlock (with manual bulkhead hatch style doors) first, get in airlock and vent it to vacuum, _then_ empty waste tank. Another tip: lower suit pressure to a setting of around 55 - 60kPa - you should consume less oxygen from your tank. Probably wont make much difference on Venus due to extreme heat, but raising suit temp to 30-40 Deg C could possibly reduce your suit power consumption a smidgin.

@@Flipsie Managed to watch the rest of this over the last couple of days - You did good! Got to Steel and a station battery. Enjoyed watching you nut-out a way to get the furnace going for steel. Based on the mood/hygiene statii at the time, I think Charli did your avatar a favour right near the end , there! - Once you beef up your power infrastructure some more, the _real_ fun starts ... cooling a pressurised space to habitable levels! - The 'traditional', obvious, power-hungry and boring way to do this is ~7 air-conditioners chained - Post phase-change, I have seen one method involving a phase-change device (I think I saw one in your crates) and a smallish proportion of water from the portable tank you are supplied. It is a _bit_ "cheesy" as it relies on an initial supply of ~40-50 Deg C gas, which they captured from the arc furnace off-gas smelting 400g - 800g iron - Then there's the fictional plant you can presumably get from one of the (T3?) traders that consumes heat ... - There's a couple of ideas there, though: - Smelting Solder: You might want to put the solid generator in a chamber and vacuum it. Then you can capture the CO2/X off-gas that comes out at ~200Deg C. (I was doing this on Europa as a source of CO2 for the greenhouse - cooled it down enough and pressurised it to liquify the X and thus get clean CO2) - That solid generator being a source of gas colder than Venus atmosphere might give you a little bit of gas that you could dump some heat into from elsewhere.

Most of the fun for me is designing the system from the ground up. Those little parts of laying every pipe and cable is what puts a contraint to the system, it isnt just a plop things and you got it going, but they take up space that could be a problem for maintenance or being able to fit something else nearby properly. After that comes the automation because while you could manually watch everything, the more you add the more mistakes happen because you cant be in multiple places at once.

@JumblyJumble - If you'd gone from SE / Empyrion to Stationeers and were expecting more of the same, then: Yes, you are missing the something that makes Stationeers fun. Stationeers is largely a systems / process control game with a good deal of survival elements. Survival very much comes to the fore at the start of a playthrough as you are "on the clock" trying to just stay ahead of the things that will kill you, whilst at the same time you're trying to build a habitat and basic production, as well as gather resources. Once you have a habitat with air that is safe to breathe and grow food, the focus changes to production and automation. I think @Shadowdrake touched on the thing that is central to Stationeers: Whilst you can manually control things, there's many systems needing controlling and this provides the 'drive' to automate the systems that are keeping your avatar alive. In many respects, Stationeers is closer to Satisfactory than it is to SE. - Again, the focus is on survival, (gas) fluid dynamics and process control, whereas SE is more about building vehicles and mechanical contraptions and the motion of solid bodies. Addressing your frustrations with building in Stationeers: Using Lego as a means of comparison for base building, in SE / Empyrion large grid, you're working with Duplo blocks and correspondingly small grid is like regular Lego. In Stationeers, you're working with Lego Technic pieces. In terms of systems, the level of detail in Stationeers is much higher than that in SE / Empyrion where in the latter is largely "assemble and forget".

It took me a few tries; eventually, it clicked. All those little things like having to use tools from your inventory to do stuff can be easily replaced with magic... but that loses something. Mind, I always loved complicated games and games that don't focus too much on having "fun" - we don't all play straightforward action arcade games, do we? Optimizing for fun isn't all there is. One thing I tend to find annoying in many games like Factorio or Minecraft (both of which I play a _lot_ of) is that building stuff is much easier than picking it back up; it makes sense to keep you in the flow and addicted, but it's also very annoying. In Stationeers, those things are mostly symmetrical, because of course they are. Why should it be hard to pick up that obsidian block you just plopped on the ground? :D You get a lot more satisfaction from effort, that was always the case. It does seem something people are trying hard to avoid nowadays, though. But there's still plenty of people who play Snowrunner or Farming Simulator :D

27:54 Eh... not sure if a pipe will blow up if it's connected to a semi-built or fully-built frame... Also, an easy way to break a pipe is to build out 5 or 6 segments, fill them to 50MPA, and then delete the ones on the edge until you get to the one you want to blow... 5 segments of 50MPA gas results in 250MPA in a single segment... 300 if you start with 6 segments. Blows pretty fast, just make sure it's not attached to anything like a frame or wall.

57:18 You should be rushing the other manufacturers. From there, build some AC units from the Atmospherics kits and have them set up in stages. The first stage you'll set at 25°C, which means your exhaust can be no more than 150° or so. So, you have the exhaust from the first stage get cooled by the second stage. So, if you keep the exhaust of the first stage at 125°, 250° is your next exhaust temp. Then, set that stage to 225° which brings you up to 350 for the exhaust, and from that, you go to regular atmo temp. This will require a lot of power, so you have to have a substantial power generation setup. You can filter atmo air all the way from the fourth stage to the second stage filter with some stategically placed valves as it cools. Additionally, smelting some specific ores (like iron) lowers the temperature... so if you're looking for something more complicated, you could look into capturing that cooler air and using that as a heat sink.

I was just thinking, you say the save data for the Terraformers project has become corrupted. Do you perhaps know in what way? I know it can be possible to restore missing bytes from corrupted files and get things working again. Maybe if there's any interest from the crew.. you, Nev and this guy MattKC could crack the file open and take a look. It's a bit of work as you sort of have to reverse engineer a bit of the data to know what is damaged but could be worthwhile if you guys want to give it a try. Maybe you can even get some tips from the developers. Just a random musing

Nev sounds like he is a pretty capable programmer and if he couldn't sniff out what direction to be looking at then it's probably toast. Sometimes it can help to have a fresh set of eyes on something to catch what you may have missed but in this case, it's likely to be a ton of work reading the binaries and using diffing between a valid save and a corrupted one to make repairs after you crack the checksum I'm sure it's still possible but a big job. I'd recommend some names if you wanted to take a shot at it but I agree, it seems like this particular series is reasonably over with the corruption and the crashing Fun while it lasted and I really want to try out Stationeers for myself sometime. I'm interested in the complex systems and chemistry that it has that Space Engineers doesn't. Though if someone could bring them together, that would be awesome! Assuming the engine can allow for it Anyway, I'll be watching for whatever you decide to do next! Really enjoying the fresh Space Engineers tutorials so far
