This week I want to talk to you about shoulder pain during dips, both on the bar and rings.
The most frequent places people have shoulder pain during dips is 1. in the front of the shoulder and 2. in the back of the shoulder.
One of the most common movement issues I see during the dip is the shoulder blade either not moving or moving in the opposite direction of the pattern of motion desired during a dip.
Now, I know there's a lot of talk about whether or not shoulder blade motion matters, if mechanics matter in terms of pain science, etc. etc. I will be doing a podcast coming up with John Rusin (part 2 w/ him) to discuss these issues as well as some future videos with Chris Johnson, so stay tuned for those to address this pain science stuff more in the future. I digress.
When you descend down into a dip, the motion in the shoulder joint you get is shoulder extension. In combination with that, you want to have some shoulder blade retraction, otherwise you essentially bottom out your shoulder extension and you can have substantial compression of the biceps tendon around the humerus.
To see how that happens, click here.
If the athlete's shoulder blade ends up rounding forward, it can frequently be associated with pinching sensations in the back of the shoulder. Make sure to check out this week's video to see an illustration of how that could be happening.
What I want an athlete to do is retract the shoulder blade a bit during the shoulder extension in a dip.
Interestingly, the dip and a bent dumbbell row are pretty similar movements, except one is a pull and the other is a push. The patterns of movement are sort of mirrors of each other and you can watch how someone performs a dumbbell row to see if they use the shoulder in the same way during the pull as the push.
Teaching the athlete how to do a bent row correctly can allow them to understand how to move their shoulder in a dip. It can be a powerful training tool.
Thanks for reading!

    Great video, I used the same exact bar attached to the rack for dips yesterday and was wondering why one of my shoulders was sore on the front, am going to apply these techniques and hopefully better next time around.

    when i was going to the gym, dips were my fav exercise and i would start my uppper body days with them actually. I had to stop going to the gym for like a few months due to developing a chronic stomach problem smhhh. im getting back into working out again after a 3 month hiatus and a whole 20 lbs lighter and def weaker. dips are killing my shoulders now where before i had felt nearly zero pain. I'm hoping once i get some of my strength back dips can be added back into my routine. ill try to update this post to see if might be my case. previously i could do maybe 40 pushups in a row, currently i can do about 18. ill try to reincorporate dips back in my routine once i can do 30 pushups. im really hoping i can do dips again, i loved them

    This is the best clear concise explanation of shoulder mechanics for push movements I've ever seen. Channels like AthleanX helped me find workarounds for exercises that exacerbated my anterior shoulder pain. But now with gums closed due to covid I'm moving over to ring exercises and had difficulty applying pain prevention to dips (partly because I lacked strength and patterning in ring movements).

    Thank you for the video! This is something I struggle with: pain in the front of the shoulder, and only on my dominant arm. Dips are definitely a way to aggravate them, but since I primarily do snatches/clean & jerks, those can OFTEN aggravate it (not always!). It seems my dominant arm has to learn to be put in a better position so I will continue to do rows and lower trap work to push the shoulder blade in the right position. Would you suggest anything else for the overhead athlete in this regard? Your explanation of the pinch is very useful. I always wondered why I only sometimes feel the pain and, obviously, only during overhead movements. It seems like on good days, the shoulder is activated/in the right position, and the rest of the time it is just not.

    Awesome! Yeah think about the scapular motion as part of it and supporting your body with both shoulder extension and the scapulae. They will retract but you can almost create protraction tension downward into the dip bars

  • @andrasivanchich
    @andrasivanchich2 жыл бұрын

    When you train for the planche you should protract the shoulders all the way down. So you say that we should stop doing this for a while util shoulder pain is gone?

    I always try to spread my chest open and keep my shoulder down and back when I do dips. However I still experience pain in my right shoulder and a bit less in my left one. Could it also be because I often let my shoulders shrug when going down?? It's hard for me to tell because I can't always keep perfect form - especially when I'm already tired and also I don't know if I may be doing these bad movements a little bit despite my focus and that little bit may be too much.
