00:00 Black Shirt Introduction
Some of you assumed that NO would be our definitive answer. Why? As we’ve previously discussed, we feel that black is the most overrated color in menswear, not because we don’t like black, but because black in modern menswear is often employed in boring and uncreative ways.
02:40 Black Shirt Pros: 1. Black is refined
03:07 2. Black is versatile
03:34 3. Black is modern
04:13 4. Black is vintage
04:40 Black Shirt Cons: 1. Black is hard to maintain
05:24 2. Black shirts are easily marred
05:49 3. Black shirts are hard to combine
06:39 4. Matching all elements of black is hard
07:19 5. Black is everywhere
Now that we’ve considered the pros and cons, let's look at some tips so you can incorporate one with some classic style.
07:52 Styling Tips: Consider Contrast and Complement
Colors that work with black:
→ Salmon
→ Most shades of light to medium gray
→ Earthy greens
→ Cool or blues
→ Most shades of light to medium brown
→ And shades of white, including Off-Whites
08:38 Find the Subtle Sweet-Spot
If you’re not one for bold color combinations, it is possible to pair black shirts with similar dark colors. Ensure there’s sufficient contrast to keep the outfit from appearing like several mismatched shades of black.
09:02 Pick a Punchy Pattern or Atypical Texture
A great way to ensure that your black shirt stands out from the rest of your ensemble is with a bold pattern or obvious texture.
09:45 Keep It Casual
Reserving your black shirt for obviously casual occasions will ensure that it doesn’t force your outfit into the weird middle-ground of casual-but-also-formal.
10:52 Toss the Tie
Neckwear rarely works well with black shirts. They either blend in too much or stand out with too much pop. Neckwear and black shirts are almost exclusively seen as parts of strict monochromatic looks.
11:30 Follow Formality
A black dress shirt is often worn as part of a Black Tie Ensemble. For occasions that call for Black Tie, you shouldn’t be wearing a black dress shirt. It just isn’t part of the established dress code. For Black Tie adjacent dress codes like Alternative Black Tie or Creative Black Tie, you could technically wear this look.
12:02 Conclusion
In most cases, a black shirt is a missed opportunity to instead take advantage of all the great colors you could be wearing. But every now and then a black shirt can be an interesting change.

As a musician (I'm glad you mentioned that), I have to keep a TON of black in my wardrobe. And you're right, I go through black shirts very quickly as they show wear very easily. I think the point about patterns and textures is a good tip. When possible, I try to take advantage of a nice contrast in textures, maybe some dark charcoal pants or a pair of grey suede shoes (again, when it is "allowed" and appropriate) to have some variety and break up the monotony. I also think rolling up your shirt sleeves is a good way to limit the "black hole" effect. Great video!!
I bought a black, French cuffed dress shirt years ago before I really knew what I was doing stylewise. I don't wear it very often, but I just can't bring myself to lose it. I'll tend to wear it with khaki trousers, a black leather belt, and square silver cuff links. I used to wear it with a charcoal grey suit.

Many years ago I played in a Western swing band and we chose black shirts with the French cuff and cutaway collar similar to what Elvis wore when he was photographed in Germany during his stint in the army, we had a white shirt too in the same cut but the black was the favourite, each of us had a white silk Western scarf similar to an Ascot I suppose for us older members of the band worn at the collar and tied like a regular tie however our youngest player always wore his collar open and tied directly to his neck in the manner of lots of the country stars of the 40's and 50's, my wife sourced a pair of vintage confetti lucite cufflinks to finish this off, while all this probably isn't very gentlemanly we did feel good on stage 😀

Do you wear the cuffs as barrel cuffs? When I wear French cuffs with nothing over the shirt, I do that with simple cufflinks.
I love this channel and I appreciate the fact that here are three men with distinct personalities and with each person with their individual personal style. Great video,Kyle.I have learned so much from this channel.
I am so glad you addressed the black shirt issue. Black T's, crews, polo's, and even button-downs are all part of my casual wear, but I have never worn a black shirt as a formal statement.

Exactly. It works best in more casual style with a good contrast.
Good information regarding the use of black shirts. I wear kilts with both an Argyll jacket with waistcoat and a Prince Charlie jacket with waistcoat. I have worn a black shirt before with both jacket styles. I have also worn a black wing collar shirt with a placated covering over the buttons. But since some of my kilts have brighter colors in them, I tend to chose a bow or standard tie that compliments a color in my kilt. The offset colors really pops on a black shirt.
So I'm just now entering in to this part myself. I find myself getting lost with so much information and to be honest it can be overwhelming. I'm still learning all of the jacket types and color pairings as well as patterns. It seems as if everything I was taught when I was younger was wrong. I'm glad I found this channel and it provides the information necessary for one to learn and process in a non condescending manner.

I’m sorry to hear the black shirt didn’t work out for you
In re: black flattering a variety of skin tones Yes but the reason it doesn’t always work for people is because there are warmer (ie. red based) black and cooler (ie. blue based) black; if they get the wrong one, it can easily wash them out. I’m also glad you brought up the issues of high contrast, texture, etc. - this really can make or break a look. Thanks for another great video!
I have almost the same jacket you're wearing. Mines single. I wear it with a black shirt all the time. I also like my light grey and black no tie

Great video with top presentation. Black polo shirts are the easiest to get away with.
I actually saw a look book the other day with a guy wearing a black shirt under a brown tweed suit with black leather boots. It looked amazing. The colors did not compliment each other at all. They actually clashed because of how different they were. But something about how it was put together just made it perfect. I’m too lazy to go find it and see what brand it was.

Don't wear black shirts under brown, especially not with black boots. You'll be exactly one red accesoir away from looking like your late to a party meeting...
Black is so pervasive today (so is navy blue for that matter), but it just soaks up so much heat: here in South Texas, it is very hot for so much of the year, & this summer has been particularity hot thus far. And I see so much black and other dark colors worn anyway 🤷♂️
Great video! Well presented!
I love my black shirts, but I have to be careful about when, where and how I wear them, e.g. business vs social settings. It's not always easy, but this guide is very helpful!
Looking at old black & white pictures from the 1930s, 40s, 50s etc you often see men in dark coloured shirts, but it seems like they were often navy blue or dark grey. See Marlon Brando in Guys & Dolls - he wore dark navy (or midnight blue) and dark grey shirts with suits. I'm not saying people didn't wear black, just that, as with two-tone shoes, I think black & white photographs make us think black was more common than it was. We imagine gangsters in black & white shoes, but we won't see dark brown & cream for instance in b&w pictures

So can I offer a suggestion. I use a little bit of Dawn dishsoap on my dark clothing along with Woollite For Darks. It gets the deodorant stains out and keeps the color darker for longer. Also, air dry or put your dryer on the most gentlest cycle you have
I have a Dark Navy Floral print shirt instead which obviously has the appearance of Black. By the way I definitely agree that Black is difficult to maintain as my jeans are a bit faded. I suppose I could look into a Dye to fix that. Excellent content as always!
2:13 That is a good look. Confidence is what is needed.
very informative. as a classical musician the black shirt/black slacks has become the very common dress uniform for musicians who aren't soloists (though sometimes are) and not the most formal of events.
Great video ladies need to realize this when wearing black all the time, to me it looks hard and reminds me of the grim riper. I wear black with a neon or white loafers and white bag to help lift the heaviness of black
I recommend everyone look into Color Analysis. When you figure out which seasonal color palette you will gain so much understanding on what looks good on you. Personally I’m a “Deep Winter” so Black is my go to color! Winter’s can get away with wearing a full black outfit as long as it’s broken up with different textures/materials/cool toned jewelry or a little bit of contrast. It’s all about skin undertones, your hair color, eye colors and the relationship they all have with each other aesthetically. Hope this helps!
That was the funniest opening ever! So deadpan!😆
I actually love black dress shirts! I have been preferring them for years
The first 20 seconds of the video was perfect, the rest of it was informative but those first 20 seconds PHENOMENAL 😊

Where I live it's too hot for a waistcoat or coat. The dress shirt largely takes the outerwear role except in very, very formal occasions. The black shirt works well as dailywear in that context, and can be jazzed-up with choice of tie, belt, and any other accoutrements.

THAT is a question I always wondered, thank you for the vid gents😄👌
The biggest knocks on black shirts are that: 1. They fade. 2. You run the risk of looking tacky like a Saturday Night Fever extra. I hate when people wear ties with black shirts.
the comment regarding black shirts fading and becoming dull is ABSOLUTELY ON POINT
I love this channel with all of my heart the only thing that I was upset over was your anti-black clothing video IM very happy and elated that you have made a video for people that the search where a black being a tattoo artist black is a mainstay for me for the simple fact is I can work and not have to worry about staining my clothes also being an artist black is something that we always usually wear thank you so very much for making this video and have a wonderful day.

It's as much that black can be overused, or you can end up with those god-awful all black monochromatic suit looks. But if done right, black looks fantastic.
That jacket IS exquisite! :)
Hi, I've been watching your vids for some time now and I've learned a lot. But I have a question. How do you hang clothes without leaving hanger marks on them? I've tried larger hangers, smaller hangers, thinner hangers, bulky ones (like suit hangers) and nothing worked. Every shirt and polo I hang gets the hanger marks. I know I can just spray some water and fix it but how can I prevent it ? Any tips?
Love the men's wearhouse prom picture. The only set up teen aged boys want.
My work requires black dress shirts and it's very difficult to find quality shirts in black.
Yes, one should definitely wear a black shirt if (1) the shirt has a nice sheen to it, (2) the black shirt is punctuated by complimentary designs, such as stripes or a nice logo (e.g., Lacoste, Fred Perry). One of the outfits I get the most compliments on is when I pair a solid black linen shirt from Island Importer* with khaki pants/shorts and a Panama hat. The linen shirt has the aforementioned sheen, and the whole outfit (I'm told) exudes strength and masculine confidence. (*a fantastic apparel company specializing in linen garments)
I love wearing a black shirt with some dark jeans with brown shoes and belt when going out to the Pub or a Bar. I'd never wear a black shirt as part as a suit.
I am very partial to a black polo neck though would have said that I wasn't so much a fan for collared shirts. However despite being one of those expecting a two second video, I actually didn't even register you were wearing a black shirt until about three and a half minutes in (even though I was obviously aware of the topic - it's been a long week!) - definitely goes to show how well the black shirt can blend into a classic wardrobe with a bit of thought!
Im New to this channel and I already feel richer and Gentleman
What color should the belt and shoes be when wearing a black t-shirt and light brown pants?
i saw Eric Clapton donning a black shirt paired with white, i think it's pinstripes double breasted suit, and a red flashy tie with a gold collar bar,i think it was at the prince's trust gala concert at 1988 he looked awesome 😎
I have a black floral shirt with small white flower patterns on it. I don’t know if that’s exactly the same thing as the question that’s being asked in this video though 🤔 🤷🏼♂️
Thnx
Just lose the suit and wear some navy blue jeans with a black belt belt if you tuck your shirt in and viola. One black shirt I recommend is Uniqlo's super non iron slim fit long sleeve shirt. It's perfection.

Especially with a white tie and a red carnation!
Minor Point: Lutherans have “pastors”, not priests. That is Anglican/Episcopal “priests”, as well as Catholic or Orthodox ones.
NZR steam engine crew (drivers and firemen) wore black shirts to hide the smuts and grime of working on the footplate of a steam locomotive. The uniform also directed them to wear a white tie though.
Really nice outfit.
0:15 I KNEW IT hahaha
Black is very slimming. That is another reason why it is so popular for men and women. I think men feel great in black - they feel younger - more hip.
Love the video & the cream/black checked double breasted jacket. I’d like to pull off that look someday - very cool.
Wore my black buttoned down shirt with straw colored slacks for the first time in a year since I bought it. My charcoal turtleneck gets more wear.
How about wearing a black shirt like a very informal/casual jacket? I think that if you wear it open over a tight white T-shirt, paired with jeans, you can get a bit of a bad-boy look, giving associations to a leather jacket, like you see in in Grease or the bomber jacket you see in Top Gun, without it looking too retro. I know that that is not classic menswear, but I think it can work, if you are aiming for something a bit more modern.
What about a white/off white suit with a black dress shirt?
Honestly there is one con I noticed: black shows sweat easily. I wear a black undershirt at work and they it’s pretty noticeable when I take the shirt off
Get a tan, pair it with pastel trousers, some nice loafers and for the love of all that's fashionable roll up the sleeves and leave it unbottoned on top.
That picture of Preston, is so totally Preston.
Yes, you should!
What about a dark red and black striped tie with a black shirt?
I would've liked to see more outfit examples that included the black dress shirt.
I prefer black shirts. I usually wear a crimson or purple tie or cravat.
My go to dress up is what my wife says is my Johnnie Cash outfit. A long sleeve mock turtleneck black jeans belt and cowboy boots with a grey houndstooth sport coat. I travel allot As a trucker so it's hard to dress fancy.
Love that jacket! Reminds me of that photo of Frank Sinatra
5:03 it sounds like black is the perfect shirt colour for fast fashion.

I’ve been advised not to get a black suit because it’s “too serious”. Even so, it’s a cool colour and I like the style of black clothes. Also, I like having such a dark palette. Jeans and a black bomber just works for school, for example.
It would’ve made my day if the video genuinely ended after Kyle’s “No” 😆

The intro xD
I was a funeral director from 20 to 24 years old and I've always enjoyed dressing up from a young age, though it took me years to find a style fit for myself. I had a firm belief that while at work wearing black was a no no for me, the family and friends of the deceased are grieving, not myself, I was there to try and make an extremely difficult and tiresome process easier so they're able to grieve naturally, the bereaved wear black to symbolize their grief. But my boss disagreed...old school, which is fine. I enjoy wearing lots of colors but of course I toned it down for work, navy, charcoal, light Grey and olive for hot weather, my goodness did he hate it lol

Not sure I agree with the advice against wearing a tie with a black dress shirt. At the very least, I think a white tie with a black dress shirt is a very sharp look. Basically, the inverse of the classic, formal white dress shirt and black tie/coat look. There's something very "Sin City" about the white on black look which I love.
